We are reliably informed that one of the mutual friends referred to in the inscription was the now deceased officer on whom the Honourable Schoolboy character was based and who at one time served under the vendor in Hong Kong where the novel is set. Perhaps John Clark (d. 1807) scholar of Scottish Gaelic literature and land agent (though the inscription makes a distinction as a surveyor) but Clark was certainly known as a writer of poetry and although most of his professional life was spent in Wales was a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland..

The author was a crippled bookbinder and bookseller from Aberdeen who obviously knew Alexander Allardyce of Dunnottar as on p.191 is a poem "To the memory of Mrs A-----e of D-----r a Lady universally admired for her amiable disposition and exemplary conduct". Mr Allardyce has filled in his wife`s name in ink. The long list of subscribers is interesting for the inclusion of professions or trades; many copies went to Granada and Jamaica in the West Indies..
