The first volume integrates the first two volumes with consecutive numbering: [52], 356 p. The remaining three volumes, although with a single title page, have two independent numbering series: III - [4], 207, [1 br.] p.; IV and V – 339, [1 br.] p. First volume with minor flaw on the top margin of the title page (to save ownership) and some (minor) stains on the outer margin of the last pages; title page of the second volume with imperfection in the top margin (probably for the same reason). Lyon edition of one of his most important works, originally published in 1525. The second group of 101 pages contains another work by the same author, with its own title page (Ientaculorum novi testamenti), but apparently it is a single typographic unit. First title page, a little dusty, printed in black and red, with an old manuscript: Dos Carmelitas descalços do Porto. Otherwise, a slightly cropped, but vey clean specimen. Contemporary full sheepskin binding, or a little later, with gold florets between the sections.

Saint Bernard (1090-1153), reformer of the Cistercian Order, canonized in 1174 by Pope Alexander III, founded in 1115 the Abbey of Claraval, mother house of around 350 monasteries spread across Europe, including Alcobaça. It contains ancient manuscripts, in both volumes: Cœnobijj Costensis vsu[m] vero obtinet Frater Antonii Rebellus; Br. Diogo de Brandão. Title page of the first volume with some stains and wormholes, without affecting the text. Contemporarry bindings (?), full sheepskin, with blind decoration on the covers and new (reconstructed) spines, retaining the four metal clasps (a loose strap). Carmine edges with the abbreviated author's name inscribed in large capitals on the front edge.

The first two volumes are made up of the facsimile (in lithograph) respecting the dimensions and colours of the original (red, blue and black) kept in the Biblioteca Mazarina, the oldest public library in France, founded and developed from the personal library of Cardinal Mazarino (1602-1661). The two volumes that accompany the facsimile, authored by Jean-Marie Dodu, include a historical introduction, the Latin transcription, accompanied by the English translation. The four volumes, as new, retain the publishers' bindings, those of the facsimile fully in red morocco, with closed gold panels on the spines and the top edge gilt at the head (with protective cases); the complementary volumes, with cloth bindings.

João Soares (1507-1572), born in Urrô (Penafiel), was a hermit of Saint Augustine and participated in the third session of the Council of Trent (1561/63); he was confessor of King D. João III and bishop of Coimbra between 1545 and the year of his death. He left us the constitutions of his diocese (Coimbra, 1548) and an extensive bibliography on religious themes, namely commentaries on the Gospels of Matthew, Luke and Mark. In 1548 he was responsible for publishing the new “Constitutions” of his bishopric. Second edition, with the royal privilege occupying the front of the second folio. The first edition (Anselmo, 158), in addition to other differences, presents the privilege on the verso of the first folio. On the back of the last sheet (missing in the BNP copy) there is a colophon dated October 1561. Copy, cropped, with ablation of the last line of the imprint (with the date), on the title page. Otherwise, a very clean and complete copy. Full sheepskin binding, from the 17th century(?) with mottled patina, preserving the original endpapers intact, on plain paper. Anselmo, 164. Jorge da Silva (†1578), nobleman and State councilor who accompanied King D. Sebastião I on the tragic journey to Africa. In the preface (2nd and 3rd preliminary pages), the printer Martim de Burgos, states: “This liuro, deuoto Lector, I print in this city Deuora meu Pay que[que] Deos aja, per duas veses & toda a copia dos liuros se dispe[n]deo muito depressa...”, so this is the third edition, the first two having been printed by André de Burgos, also in Évora, in 1571(?) and 1574 respectively (Anselmo, 379 & 409). Edition mainly composed in round characters, with some epigraphs and current titles in Gothic. Cropped copy, with slight browning and occasional minor stains; title page a little shorter; carmine edges, with excess ink sometimes staining some margins. 20th century full sheepskin binding. Fernão Mendes left for India in 1537, having stayed in the East for around 21 years. The “Pilgrimage”, a fantastic account of his troubled adventures, was originally published on the initiative of Fr. Belchior Faria, 31 years after his death (Lisbon, 1614), from the original manuscript bequeathed by the author to Casa Pia dos Penitentes. Copy lightly handled, slightly cropped (especially at the head) and with some browning; Cover page a little dusty. The work, composed of two parts with independent pagination, consists of a collection of writings by Jesuit missionaries, published between 1649 and 1661 for the East India Company, standing out for its rich iconography. The edition is illustrated with an engraved allegorical frontispiece, a large fold-out map (Route d’Osaca à Iedo), 4 fold-out engravings and 21 double engravings; It also includes 70 copperplate print illustrations (±135x170 mm), alongside the text. Copy apparently treated and washed, missing the last engraving of the first part: “Le Temple de Dayro” (p. 222/223 or 224/225); the second part includes an engraving not recorded in the index: “Grand temple proche de Saccai” (p. 92/93). Extensive ownership on the free endpaper: “Ce livre appartient à Jean-Baptiste Cavernier Aubergiste Ala(?) Petit Allonville Grande Route Domaine à Albert... Maximum. | [gravura xilográfica com as armas de Portugal].- Romæ: impressa per Iacobum Mazochium, [9 de Agosto do] 1513.- [6] f.; 21 cm.- E., Very rare original edition of an important letter addressed by King D. Manuel I to Pope Leo proudly announcing the recent successes of Afonso de Albuquerque (1453-1515) in India and the East Indies, with particular emphasis on the conquest of Malacca in 1511. The small leaflet consists of a single section with six leaves (A6 signatures), with 11 printed pages (the last one blank) and the following colophon at the end: Romæ printed per Iacobum Mazochium .9. Augusti. A second edition of this same epistle was published in Vienna, Austria, on September 16th (just 36 days after the first), by the printers Hieronymus Vietor & Johannes Singriener. The copy, slightly cropped, but very clean, has a small central flaw on the title page, repaired on the back, without loss of support; the same flaw, with less extension, is repeated in the next leaf. Full blue morocco binding, probably from the 20th century, signed: Bound by Zaehnsdorf. London. England. (workshop active between 1842 and 1947). Covers with triple square fillet and the Manueline coat of arms, in the centre, gold engraved; gold stipple on the thickness of the boards and gilt edges. The rear board has a pocket, possibly for storing a document, but it is empty. We are not aware of the existence of any copy in mainland Portuguese libraries (public or private), having only found two copies of the same edition in the Public Library and Regional Archive of Ponta Delgada (quotas: Safe 110 RES and JC/ AR.2 A/390 RES), the second of which belongs to the José do Canto Collection. Library of Congress (for the only copy referenced outside Portugal), DP605. M357 1513.

HERSCHEL, Sir John Frederick William.- Results of astronomical observations made during the years 1834, 5, 6, 7, 8, at the Cape of Good Hope; being the completion of a telescopic survey of the whole surface of the visible heavens, commenced in 1825.- London: Published by Smith, Elder and Co., 1847.- [4], XX, 452, [2, 2] p.: 1 frontisp. litogr., XVII estampas; 31 cm.- E., First edition of one of the most important works by John Herschel (1792-1871), famous English astronomer, mathematician, chemist and inventor, born in Slough (Berkshire). The work consists of an exhaustive survey of the stars visible in the celestial sphere, from the southern hemisphere, constituting the natural complement to the survey carried out by the author's father, the German astronomer, naturalized Englishman, Willam Herschel (1738-1822), at the beginning of the 19th century . John Herschel died aged 79 and is buried in Westminster, next to Charles Darwin. Ownership manuscripts on title page: Coll. Aug. Olyssip. 1857.; Ex-libris G. Blake(?). Lightly handled copy, with slight browning, especially in the final prints, of which four are fold-out. The collation of the two volumes (or parts) is as follows. Pars prima: [6 f.], [100, 6, 1 br.] p.: 1 engraved title, 1 engraving (verse f. prel. [5]), 100 engravings; second part: [8] f., [130, 1 br.] p.; 1 engraved title, 1 engraving, [119] engravings. The two volumes, with title pages and text in Italian, Latin and German, are illustrated with a total of 224 engravings (in fact 223), two are titles, two allegorical engravings, one with the five orders, the other on fresco painting , at the end of the second volume and 218 architectural engravings, all numbered. The first volume lacks engraving No. 71, which should have contained, on the verso, the text of engraving No. 72. In the second volume, the descriptions of engravings No. 112 and 113 are missing, but there is no gap in the sequence of engravings. Ex-libris and white seal of the Salema Garção bookstore. [1732].- [38], 1232, [30] p. 1 retrato; 40 cm.- E., John Spencer (1630-1693), English clergyman and academic, born in Bocton (Kent), was appointed rector of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, in 1667, a position he held until the end of his life. Third edition, enlarged, of his most important work (the first two were published in 1685 and 1727) and also the most controversial, where the author seeks to demonstrate the Egyptian origin of the laws and rituals of the Hebrews and that Judaism is not the oldest world religion. Copy with some browning, sometimes strong, preserving the rare portrait of the author. Title page with former ownership “Da Livraria do Collº de Sta. Rita de Coimbra” and white seal of “Joaquim de Vasconcellos - Porto”. Good binding of the time, full rigid parchment, with double squares and large blind florets (in blocking press), in the center of the covers. Brunet, V, coll. 486.

[1765-1775].- 6 vols.: il.; 22 cm.- E., A masterpiece of elegance and refinement, entirely engraved in copperplate print, it took more than 10 years for the publisher to complete the edition. Etienne Fessard (1714-1777) himself was responsible for opening the 238 compositions in verse (in 724 pages) on a copper plate, while the 243 figures, 243 vignettes and 229 “culs-de-lampe” were written by the engraver François Montulay. Very clean copy, from the first and most popular edition, keeping all the proofs (text and illustrations) very fresh. Good bindings, full morocco “vieux rouge”, unsigned, but probably made in France at the beginning of the 20th century (?); top folder of the first volume loose; triple fillets and “dents-de-rat” on the covers, panels closed in gold with florets on the spine sections; rolls on the squares and thickness of the boards; impeccable gilt edges. Of this edition, said Gordon Ray (The art of the French illustrated book. New York, 1982), which ranks among the one hundred most beautiful French illustrated books of the 18th and 19th centuries. [gravura xilográfica com a marca do impressor] | ¶ Com licença do Supremo Conselho da Sancta | & Geral [In]quisição...- Em Lisboa: Por Manoel de Lyra, 1584.- [12], 280 f.; 12 cm.- E., This is the famous Piscos edition, considered by experts, booksellers and collectors as the rarest of all editions of “Os Lusíadas”. According to some investigators, it is probably the true second edition, refering one of the two editions dated 1572 to a date not before 1584. The explanation of the unusual denomination is as follows: on page 76 (f.), in the first two verses of stanza 65, in song III, wrongly numbered 47, the Poet, when celebrating the victories of King D. Afonso Henriques, writes: “Com estas sojugada foy Palmella, | E a piscosa Cizimbra...” which, at the foot of the same page, the commentator’s note, explains: “Chama piscosa, porq[ue] em certo te[m]po se ajunta ali gra[n]de ca[n]tidade de piscos (birds), pera se passare[m] a Affrica”. Copy slightly cropped (without affecting the text), with old ownership (unreadable) between the first two lines of the title page (with very light stains). Otherwise, a very clean example, with gilt edges (old). Modern pencil inscription on external free endpaper: Purchased by (unreadable) A. Henriques de Oliveira from Francisco Cordeiro de Sousa. Internally very good, well-preserved with general toning, very pale staining & marks in places, a few heavier marks, shaved close to page numbers in places, one short marginal nick to edge of title, binding tight & strong, slight shelf-lean, vellum very good with a nice colouration from age, the vellum would've originally had ties, bearing Ex Libris plate and pencil owner inscription of Michaelis Hadriani Young A scarce first edition of Blackwood's attack on the enemies of Mary, Queen of Scots. Blackwood visited Mary frequently during her imprisonment. After Mary's execution, he published this exposure of her treatment - a diatribe against Queen Elizabeth I

With age related BS 8363 number plate (not SV), Chasis no. 246, with distinguishing Black Detz lights and rear mudguards only.Fully verified by The Science Museum, Tuckett Brothers, Cherished Car Insurance, State of New Jersey (copies) and DVLAThis Holsman High Wheeler, made in Chicago in 1904, was recently recovered from a local yard clearance where it had languished for years. Its existence was not previously known by the Veteran Car Club of Great Britain. It is thought there is only one other Holsman in this country.Before it came to the UK in around 2002, the High Wheeler belonged to Franklin B Tucker of New Jersey, who was very well known in US veteran car circles and was a past-President of the AACA (the Antique Automobile Club of America - the equivalent of the VCC in the UK).December 10th 1972 New York Times8 Years A-BuildingFranklin Tucker of West Caldwell has rebuilt a 1905 rope-driven Holsman literally from a pair of license plates. Mr. Tucker had been summoned to the family's carriage house to appraise what appeared to be an unusual set of license plates, and it was there that he discovered a pile of the original Holsman parts.Eight years were spent in assembling the rest of the parts, and today the machine, with its high wheels and two- cylinder air-cooled engine, can be seen cruising along with the rest of the antiques.August 11th 1978 New York TimesFranklin B. Tucker of West Caldwell, in his second term as national president of the club (Antique Autobile Club of America), points out that the hobby involves the entire family. The New Jersey Region Lists 435 members, with the wives admitted free if they belong to the national organization.Most hobbyists agree that while people seem to be most interested in the value of their restored automobiles they try to discourage inquiries because their automobiles are beyond value to their owners. Mr. Tucker has owned his 1913 Metz Roadster for 30 years. He also owns a 1924 Franklin and a 1905 Holsman.Eight years were spent in assembling the rest of the parts, and today the machine, with its high wheels and two- cylinder air-cooled engine, can be seen cruising along with the rest of the antiques.We have traced part of the history of this particular car, chassis number 246, with the help of American experts. We now know that it was discovered around seventy years ago by Franklin B Tucker as a pile of parts. His reassembly and ownership of the remarkable car was the subject of two articles in the New York Times in the 1950s. Copies of these are included with the car.The English buyer planned to drive it in the annual London to Brighton veteran car run but after an early journey to Ireland, it broke down before he was able to do so and was put away.'High wheelers' were popular rural America in the first decade of the 20th century, built to straddle rocks in the centre of the road. The Holsman was regarded as the very best of these, coming to be known as 'the Cadillac of high wheelers.' Holsman sold about 2,500 of them over a period of 8 or 9 years from the beginning of the 1900s. This very early example from 1904 is their 'Type 3'.It has a correct air-cooled flat twin engine which still turns over. Amongst the large quantity of spares which will also be sold (including two more sets of wheels in lot 250A and 250B).Franklin B Tucker wrote the only book about Holsman cars, part history and part workshop manual. It was printed in 1994 in a very limited edition of 100 copies.
