NO RESERVE Byron (George Gordon Noel, Lord).- Moore (Doris Langley) Two Typescript Letters signed to Miss Violet Walker, each 3pp. and 2pp., c. 255 x 205 mm., notepaper headed 'Museum of Costume, Eridge Castle, Tunbridge Wells', signed by Moore in blue biro, 10th & 28th December 1956, Doris Langley Moore is writing to Miss Violet Walker of the City of Nottingham Public Libraries about various books she plans on writing about Byron, "I found when I went to Eridge that I could never get down to any solid writing there, and when I am away during the winter, I can't trundle a huge collection of reference books with me, so I had to abandon temporarily my book After Byron, and I started instead to do this novel which (I tell you very confidentially) is about a man who forges Byron's burned Memoirs," folds, staple in corner, the first with library-stamp to top edge, housed in modern cloth chemise; and a first edition of Moore's "My Caravaggio Style", v.s. (3).

Best, 1642. ⁂ Christopher Vernon (c. 1582-1652), first Secondary of the Office of the Pipe in the Public Exchequer of Hereford. The present work discusses the taxes generated by lands under the charge of the sheriffs; the so-called custody lands. The income from such lands were paid to the Clerk of the Pipe and never passed through the hands of the Exchequer's auditors of land revenue. Vernon pointed out that many of them were very difficult to levy and were likely to be lost.

Who was condemned for felony and burglary, in breaking up the house and robbing of Mr. Francis Tryon merchant, first edition, engraved frontispiece (not called for), trimmed at head, just touching first word of title and affecting a few page numbers, foxed and stained, frontispiece with small abrasion at foot, trimmed to border and laid down, 19th century red half roan, spine gilt, corners worn, some soiling, rubbed, [Wing T3293], small 4to, Printed by William Godbid for Nath. Brook at the Angel in Cornhill, and Henry Marsh at the Princes Arms in Chancery-lane, 1663.⁂ One of two printings of the first edition (the other with 14pp.) of this account of Turner's execution, which was witnessed by Samuel Pepys, who stood 'upon the wheel of a cart, in great pain, above an hour before the execution was done'. James Turner was Lieutenant-Colonel of the city militia during the Civil War.

A pirated version (practically word for word) of Mary Cole's The Lady's Complete Guide; Or Cookery In All Its Branches, 1788; thereby calling into question the supposed identity of the compiler.

Methodism.- [Gibson (Edmund, Bishop of London)] Observations upon the conduct and behaviour of a certain sect, usually distinguished by the name of Methodists, first edition, title in half-title form, woodcut head-piece and decorative initial, title stained and repaired, without loss of text, A4 inner gutter strengthened, a few marginal repairs, some spotting or staining, lightly browned, modern half brown morocco, spine gilt, 4to, [?London], no printer, [c.1740].⁂ Rare in commerce. Gibson was an active opponent of dissenters of any sort, and in the late 1730s turned his attention to what he saw as a new threats to the established church in the rise of Methodism and the Moravians.

Murder.- Matchless villany [sic]: or, a full and authentic narrative of the robbery and murder of John Penny, Esq; in a letter from a gentleman in London, to his friend in Hampshire, first edition, woodcut head- and tail-pieces and decorative initial, price at foot of title altered by hand from 6d. to 1s. 6d, some spotting and staining, lightly browned, modern half calf over 19th century marbled boards, red morocco label to spine, 8vo, Printed for J. Huggonson, 1741.⁂ Rare. John Penny had chambers in Clement's Inn, and was murdered by his servant John Hall, who lived with him there. Hall got himself into financial difficulties, and resolved to kill Penny in order to steal from him. Having removed his clothes in order to avoid detection Hall struck Penny with a stick and then cut his throat. He then hid the body in a cesspit. A few days later he went to Penny's nephew, Mr. Wooton, on pretence of enquiring after his master. So persistent was Hall with his enquiries, returning to Wooton's house several times, that Wooton became suspicious, and had Hall arrested. He was hanged in September 1741 and his body afterwards hung on chains on a highway in Shepherd's Bush. A print at the British Museum shows a naked Hall trying to drain Penny's blood into a chamber pot.

Cooper at the Globe in Pater-Noster-Row, 1744.⁂ Rare in commerce. Cowley was professor of mathematics at the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich between 1761 and 1773, and was appointed Cartographer Royal to George II. The chart of the Mediterranean here was available separately at the price of sixpence. The work was printed for the publisher and bookseller Mary Cooper.

Cooper in Pater-noster-Row, 1744.⁂ Translated from the 1704 edition of Traité de la preuve par comparaison d'écritures, with a 20-page preface added by the translator. 'The French lawyer, to whom we owe the following treatise, wrote it to assert the natural rights of mankind, and to oppose some attempts made in favour of a practice, which if once established, would have afforded corrupt Ministers an handle to pervert justice, and oppress innocents at their pleasure.' (translator's preface).

Jacobite author.- Russia.- Gordon (Alexander) The History of Peter the Great, Emperor of Russia. To which is prefixed, A short general history of the country, from the rise of that monarchy: and an account of the author's life, 2 vol., first edition, list of subscribers, 3 engraved portraits (2 as frontispieces), folding engraved map, final advertisement f., vol.1 2E4 short tear at foot, touching 3 letters, but without loss, occasional spotting or light staining, contemporary calf, gilt spines in compartments and with red and black morocco labels (the reds new but sympathetic), a few stains, rubbed and marked, a solid set, 8vo, Aberdeen, Printed by and for F. Douglass and W. Murray, 1755.⁂ Around 1692 Gordon travelled to Russia. He was introduced to the Czar, who was sufficiently impressed to make him a major in the Russian army. Within a few months he was promoted to lieutenant-colonel, rising later to major-general. He fought for the Jacobites in the 1715 rising.

Northern earthquake.- Porteus (Beilby, Bishop of Chester) A Letter to the inhabitants of Manchester, Macclesfield, and the adjacent parts, on occasion of the late earthquake in those places, first edition, foxed, lightly browned, contemporary wrappers, foxed, 12mo, Chester, Printed by J. Poole, Foregate-Street, [1777].⁂ A rare little work. The earthquake is estimated to have reached 4.4 on the Richter scale, and was widely felt in Manchester, Macclesfield, Preston, Wigan, and Stockport. There was no loss of life and only minor structural damage. Provenance: Hugh Selbourne, M.D. (couple of small marginal ink stamps).

London.- Bridewell Hospital.- List of the Governors of the hospitals of Bridewell and Bethlem, and of their benefactions, spotted, lightly browned, modern drab wrappers, rare, Printed by Thomas Parker, No. 71, Wood-Street, Cheapside, 1792 § Waddington (William) Considerations on the original and proper objects of the Royal Hospital of Bridewell. Addressed to the governors, first edition, half-title (bound after title), occasional spotting, lightly browned, modern blue wrappers, Printed at the Philanthropic Reform, St. George's Fields, for R. Bickerstaff, 1798; and 3 others, 18th & early 19th century works on the same, 8vo (5)⁂ A very good group of works on this former residence of Henry VIII, which later became a hospital, prison and workhouse. It stood in Bridge Street on the banks of the River Fleet in the City of London. In 1700 it became the first prison to appoint a doctor. The name Bridewell was adopted by other prisons, and often refers to a city's main prison, usually close to a court.

William Pitt.- Armstrong (Francis) The Triumph of Pitt, An Irregular Ode; Respectfully dedicated to the Friends of his Immortal Memory, The Members of the Pitt Club, first edition, bifolium, drophead title, 4pp., a few autograph corrections and insertions by the author, folds, some foxing and staining, with 3 additional manuscript stanzas in Armstrong's hand on another sheet, C. Collins, [c.1811]; and an autograph manuscript poem by Armstrong, Iberia War Song, 3pp., July 1808, both manuscripts laid down, folds, slightly browned, folio (3 pieces). ⁂ The first mentioned is rare, with only a Chapel Hill, NC, copy recorded by WorldCat. A poem on the virtues and achievements of William Pitt who died in 1806. At the end of this poem is a prospectus for an engraving made from a painting by Armstrong 'in commemoration of the Jubilee, Oct. 25, 1809.'. A note to say that the print will be published on the 25th October, 1811 has been crossed though, and amended with the manuscript note 'as soon as possible' in Armstrong's hand.

Bookseller's catalogue.- Spanish & Portuguese books.- Salvá (Vincent) A Catalogue of Spanish and Portuguese books, with occasional literary and bibliographical remarks, 2 parts in 2 vol., some spotting, part 1 original drab boards, original printed label to spine, a few small stains, part 2 modern similar drab boards, both rubbed and little marked, 8vo, M. Calero, Spanish printer, 1826 & 1829.⁂ Rare in commerce. 'probably the first catalogue of a copious and select Spanish library ever published in England.' (Salvá's preface). Complaining of the lack of Spanish bibliography, he says that rather than confine himself to observations on the rarity of the books, or 'the peculiarities of the edition', he has endeavoured to 'discover and correct' errors of previous Spanish historians of the book.

Music.- Sketch of the Life (A) of C. Eulenstein, the celebrated performer on the Jew's Harps, first edition, engraved portrait frontispiece, errata slip at end, foxing and marginal staining, modern cloth with old paper label stuck to front cover, 8vo, James J. Welsh, 1833.⁂ A former pastry chef, Eulenstein was the most celebrated performer of the Jew's Harp of his time, although it had a severely detrimental affect on his teeth and forced him to give up the instrument and teach guitar instead. The Jew's Harp - neither Jewish in origin, nor a harp - is the ancestor of the mouth organ and is one of the oldest instruments in the world. It is believed the instrument derived it's name from 'Jaw's harp' or perhaps the French 'jeu-troupe' meaning toy trumpet.

Whalley, 1840; and another, Printing, 8vo (2)⁂ Thomson was the leading calico printer in Europe of his day. His skill as an industrial chemist and his success in improving the quality of design led to him being called the 'Duke of Wellington of calico printing'. In order to enhance standards in the trade he supported schools of design, and successfully campaigned for the act of 1842, which extended the copyright on dress patterns to nine months and on those for furnishings to three years.
