Wordsworth (William) - Select Views in Cumberland, Westmoreland, and Lancashire, first edition , 48 soft-ground engravings by William Frederick Wells after Wilkinson, some minor spotting, recent half calf, [Abbey, Scenery , 188; Upcott p.131], folio, R.Ackermann, 1810. Wikinson was a Carlisle-born amateur artist who until 1804 lived with his wife`s relatives the Brownriggs at Ormathwaite under Skiddaw. In 1803 he became Vicar of East Wretham in Norfolk and left the north for good. The text was supplied anonymously by William Wordsworth, who knew Wilkinson but who did not wish his name to be associated with the latter`s rather amateurish drawings (the figures and animal groups in the etchings were supplied by another, better artist). Wordsworth`s text later became the basis for his Guide to the Lakes. Provenance: The Appleby Castle Library, with the monogram (H below a crown) of Lord Hothfield, and an earlier armorial bookplate of Sir James Graham, Bart [of Netherby, Cumbria]. This copy was sold in the sale of the contents of Appleby Castle in April 1963 (lot 1403).
