He had gone to Constantinople as a youth while Lord Paget, a relative of his mother, was ambassador there. He travelled extensively, returning to London in 1703 at the age of 18. Spencer calls this book 'one of the curiosities of literature' for the crassness and ignorance it displays." (Blackmer)

Kinneir (John Macdonald) Journey through Asia Minor, Armenia, and Koordistan, first edition, large engraved folding map with routes in red housed in pocket at end, short tear with tape repair verso, one or two short splits to foldlines, bound without half-title, scattered faint spotting, modern half-calf, [Blackmer 914], 8vo, 1818. *** Kinneir was attached to Sir John Malcolm's mission from India to Persia in 1808-9, acting as an agent at Bushire and making numerous journeys within Persia. In 1810 he went back to England but returned to India in 1813-14 by way of Cyprus, Constantinople, Baghdad and Bombay. It is this latter journey that is recounted here, though his earlier travels in Persia are also listed (p.552).
