Rare in the dust-jacket, especially so in such excellent condition. Many of the copies were seemingly lost in the bombing of Heinemann's publishing house during the war.

Wunderkammer.- Worm (Ole) Museum Wormianum seu Historia rerum rariorum, tam naturalium, quam artificialium, tam domesticarum, quam exoticarum..., first edition, title with woodcut printer's device, engraved portrait by G. Wingendorp after C. van Mander and a double-page plate by G. Wigendorp, woodcut and engraved illustrations in text, woodcut head- and tail-pieces and decorative initials, lower margins with worm trace and/or a few small wormholes, the odd minor instance of worming in other margins at start, G1 piece out of lower blank corner, occasional spotting, occasional light staining or soiling, lightly browned, later vellum, yapp edges, spine gilt and with black stamped floral motifs and an olive morocco label, spine worn, some staining and marking, [Willems 772; Nissen ZBI 4473], folio, Leiden, Jan Elzevier, 1655.⁂ A wide-margined copy of this catalogue of Worm's collection of natural history specimens and other objects, which was produced by his son William. Upon his death the collection was purchased by Frederick III, who transferred it to Copenhagen Castle. It later became absorbed into the Danish Royal Kunstkammer. The first three parts deal with minerals, plants and animals, and the fourth with man-made objects.

This copy signed by Robert Blake, the actor playing Perry Smith in the 1967 film adaption directed by Richard Brooks.

In this work by a fellow alchemist Henshaw would have found biographies of Nicolas Flamel and Michael Sendivogius, along with a catalogue of works on chemistry. Provenance: 'Ex libris Tho: Henshaw, Catalogo inscriptis, Nov:18:1661'.

The book and jacket were produced under wartime economy standards making the latter in particular especially fragile; copies in attractive condition as here are rare.

Rare in this condition.

Hanway (Jonas) Proposal for Country Naval free Schools to be built on Waste Lands, giving such effectual Instructions to Poor Boys, as may nurse them for The Sea Service, first edition, dedication copy, 3 engraved titles, 9 engraved plates, most folding or double-page, 48pp. engraved music, engraved vignettes, offsetting, occasional foxing, contemporary diced Russia, gilt, green morocco label lettered in gilt "Presented to John Thornton Esq: Treasurer By the Corporation of the Marine Society May: MDCCLXXXIII" with gilt border to upper cover, neatly and sympathetically rebacked, edges repaired, folio, 1783.⁂ Presented to John Thornton, the co-founder of the Marine Society and one of the dedicatees of this work. This lavish production, part of Hanway's proposal to increase the scope of the Marine Society, was not well received, in part due to the excessive expense of the publication. John Thornton (1720-90) earned a substantial fortune as a merchant and devoted much of his later life to charitable and Christian causes.

Weyerstraten, 1665.⁂ First edition of Kircher's survey of the subterranean world, which is based on his visit to Sicily in 1637-38, during which he witnessed the eruptions of Etna and Stromboli. Includes geology, metallurgy, mining, mineralogy and meteorolgy, coupled with speculation on more esoteric subjects, such as the possibility of underworld inhabitants. The world map (Shirley 436) is one of the earliest to depict the movement of ocean currents with any degree of accuracy.

It was poorly reviewed and has not been reprinted.
