Hardy (Thomas) Jude the Obscure, first edition in book form, etched frontispiece by H. MacBeth-Raeburn, tissue guard, map of Hardy's 'Wessex' at end, W.W.Greg's copy with his ink inscription "W.W.Greg River 1949" to front free endpaper, original dark green cloth, gilt, t.e.g, others uncut, slightly rubbed and marked, a little cocked but a good copy, [Purdy pp.86-87], 8vo, 1896 [but 1895].⁂ Hardy's final novel, ahead of its time. Aimed at Victorian institutions such as the Church, marriage and education, and with a modern heroine in the "new woman" Sue Bridehead, this tragic story was vilifed by many whose moral indignation was roused by Hardy's controversial themes. It has been suggested that he was so distressed at how the book was received and misunderstood that he gave up writing novels and concentrated on poetry.Sir Walter Wilson Greg (1875-1959), bibliographer and Shakespeare scholar.

* HANNAH FRANK (SCOTTISH 1908 - 2008), RED FLOWERS (1929) lithograph on paper, signed and dated 2005 in pencil framed and under glass image size 37cm x 24.5cm, overall size 49cm x 34cm Comment: "Red Flowers" is the rarest of the Hannah Frank signed prints and so far as we can ascertain the only other example to have appeared at auction was sold by us in May 2012. Hannah recorded in her diary that she completed "Red Flowers" on Monday 27th May 1929 and that she sent it to Gilbert Highet on Wednesday 29th. Highet had been editor of GUM (Glasgow University Magazine) but by 1929 he had moved to Oxford and had become involved with The University News, in which he unsuccessfully attempted to have published two of Frank's illustrations, Red Flowers and Sorcery. The former was deemed to be of such high quality as to command a price that the University News could not afford. Highet himself bought Sorcery for 25/- and had it framed, remarking in correspondence with Frank, that he thought this drawing 'underpriced'. Somnia and Vana Spes were also enthusiastically received, but not published as the magazine, intended as a commercial venture, ran into publishing problems. "Red Flowers" was pubished in the Glasgow University Magazine in October 1929. It is documented as HFDS plate 47 on page 68 of "Hannah Frank, A Glasgow Glasgow Artist, Drawings & Sculpture " (second edition) and the original drawing is in the Hannah Frank Collection. Gilbert Highet was a Scottish American classicist, academic writer, intellectual critic, and literary historian (Gilbert Highet - Wikipedia). Note: Since McTear's first promoted Hannah Frank's spectacular work in 2011, the prices for her ever more rare signed prints have continued to rise with many current prices being more than five times higher than those achieved barely a decade ago. The latest UK auction record figure for a single signed lithograph was most recently achieved (twice) in our auction on 24th October 2021 but beaten in January 2023 in Edinburgh by a single print achieving £900 (hammer). Note 2: Hannah Frank was the last living link to the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau period. She studied at the Glasgow School of Art and Glasgow University in the 1920`s and her haunting pen and ink drawings have been exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Scottish Academy and Royal Glasgow Institute. A series of lithographs of some of her 90 drawings were made in the 1960's and again in the 1980's to satisfy the demand for her work after exhibitions in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Only a relatively few of these prints were hand signed (in pencil) by Hannah and it's understood that only one print was ever editioned (numbered) in a conventional manner. A major exhibition at the Royal Glasgow Institute in 2006 brought her work to a new generation of admirers and received considerable press coverage. Her work toured for five years in the UK and the USA culminating in an exhibition at Glasgow University which opened on her 100th birthday 23rd August 2008. After her death, she was awarded a posthumous Honorary Doctorate at Glasgow University and Glasgow City Council`s Lord Provost`s Award For Art (2009).

Maud Earl (British, 1863-1943) A French Bulldog signed and dated 'Maud Earl/1900' (lower right) oil on canvas 61 x 46cm (24 x 18 1/8in). Footnotes: Maud Earl is renowned for her paintings of pure-bred and important dogs of her day - her name is virtually synonymous with portraits of pure breed dogs. As the daughter and niece respectively of the well-known animal artists, George Earl (1824 -1908) and Thomas Earl (active 1836-1885), she was encouraged to develop her canine brilliance. However, as a child Earl was more interested in becoming a musician, but under her father's tutelage, she rapidly became a talented painter. Working first in black and white, drawing her subjects repeatedly, then learning the anatomy, by first drawing the skeleton. This training proved her unsurpassed ability at the depiction of a dog's anatomy. Earl attended The Royal Female School of Art, winning a prize for modelling in 1886. She exhibited her first work at the Royal Academy in 1884 – a painting of a stag – with her first dog painting being exhibited there in 1886. In total she exhibited 13 works at the Royal Academy. She also exhibited 20 works at the Fine Art Gallery, 19 at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, and then once at the Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham, and Manchester City Art Gallery. Never working from photographs, Earl sketched the anatomy in pastels, before painting in oil in the presence of the dog. With early commissions coming from the world of dog shows, and later for Queen Victoria, the Prince and Princess of Wales (later Edward VII), Albert and Alexander, and Kathleen, the Duchess of Newcastle. One such famous portrayal was of 'Ceasar', Edward VII's, much loved Fox Terrier. Having accepted commercial commissions from the Whisky distillers, James Buchanan, Earl produced work for several advertising campaigns. With international recognition and solo exhibitions, her work became popularised by her work appearing in many illustrated books, limited edition prints and engravings, and the fashionable magazines of the day. Earl's own published work included photogravure portfolios titled 'British Hounds and Gun Dogs' and 'Terrier and Toys'. They were published by The Berlin Photographic Company in 1902 and 1903 respectively. Another famous work published 1906 by this Berlin company was the 'The Sportsman Calendar'. In 1917, Earl emigrated to America, taking a studio over Central Park at 590 Fifth Avenue, and it is in this city that she died. Working over a period of 50 years she left an extraordinary body of fine paintings, and her work is in the collections of the Kennel Club, Birkenhead; the Worthing Museum and Art Gallery; and the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum, Bournemouth. GLENLIVET NADURRA 1991 VINTAGE EDITION SPEYSIDE SINGLE MALT Distilled: 1991Bottled: 03/2010Batch Number: 0310B48% ABV / 70cl One of the very first distilleries in Scotland to be granted an official licence, after the passing of the licencing act in 1823, Glenlivet distillery has become synonymous with Speyside whisky. So much so, that at one point 28 other distilleries in the area adopted “Glenlivet” as a suffix to their own brand in order to piggyback on the reputation Glenlivet had built for itself. Although that practise has fallen by the wayside in recent years some independent bottlers still use it. The Glenlivet brand is now one of the most recognisable in the world, and despite the distillery undergoing an expansion and upgrade (beginning) in 2010, their iconic 12-Year-Old expression still had to be discontinued for a few years before production was able to catch up with demand.
LAGAVULIN 1979 DISTILLERS EDITION 1L ISLAY SINGLE MALT 43% ABV / 1L The Islay distillery of Lagavulin first gained notoriety in 1862 when it was acquired by the well-known blender, John Logan Mackie. He then passed the reins to his nephew Peter, who is credited with the creation of the highly regarded White Horse Blend. This blend was so successful that by 1924 the Mackie group changed their name to White Horse Distillers, before becoming part of the DCL group a few years later. Lagavulin single malt was still produced under the White Horse Distillers name until the late 1990s when it became part of the Diageo conglomerate. The most famous advocate of Lagavulin is probably fictional character, Ron Swanson, from hit US sit-com Parks & Recreation. However, Nick Offerman (the actor who plays Ron) must also enjoy a drop, as he has partnered up with the distillery to create his own limited-edition whisky. Please see additional photo.

DEW OF BEN NEVIS CERAMIC DECANTER, MILLENNIUM BLEND AND WEST HIGHLAND RAILWAY EDITION BLENDED WHISKY All 40% ABV / 70cl Qty: 3 Ben Nevis distillery, located at the foot of the UK’s highest mountain of the same name, was responsible for producing one of the most successful blended whiskies of the late 19th Century. Named after “Long” John MacDonald, who was the first to acquire a licence for the distillery, the Long John brand was so popular that a second distillery was built next door just to keep up with demand (and, no… before you ask, we don’t know what Mr MacDonald’s “Long” moniker referred to, or if it was self-appointed). Sadly, these good fortunes didn’t continue, and by 1908 the second distillery ceased production, instead being utilised as a bonded warehouse. Today Ben Nevis is owned by Japanese whisky giants, Nikka, with some of its output being used in their blended “Japanese” whiskies. Its popularity as a single malt has also grown thanks to many favourable reviews.
