Fuller Esq with the compmts of the Publishers, recent speckled calf, smooth spine divided by gilt double fillets, gilt lettered morocco label in second compartment, covers with gilt single fillet and arrowhead, leaf, and star roll border, 8vo. This first collected edition of Moore's poems, published at the request of his children, contains the first book appearance of his classic poem A Visit From St. Nicholas (more popularly known by the title Twas The Night Before Christmas) in a collection of his own work. Moore, a dour professor of classics, wrote the poem in 1822 as a Christmas gift for his children. The Santa Claus myth begins about 300 A.D. with St. Nicholas, a bishop in Asia Minor, who was generous to the poor. However, it was Moore's magical poem about the mysterious Christmas Eve visitor which really gave to the world Santa Claus as we know him today: a right jolly old elf with a little round belly, dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, and carried in a sleigh pulled by eight tiny rein-deer. Moore considered the poem frivolous compared to his more scholarly works, and was reluctant to acknowledge authorship, but it was an overnight sensation, which has been reprinted over and over again, and Moore is now remembered for nothing else. Even D.L Chambers, president of Bobs-Merrill had serious misgivings about the book, and cut the initial print run from the projected 25,000 copies to a reduced printing of 7,500 copies. Needless to say, Chambers proved wrong about the book. Barely a month after its official release, Bobbs-Merrill submitted an order for an additional 12,000 stated first edition copies (this second issue bound in green cloth). By July 1949 The Fountainhead was in its 30th printing and had sold more than 400,000 copies. It made 26 appearances on the bestseller list, spawned the 1949 film starring Gary Cooper and Patricia Neal, and continues to impact its readers profoundly today. (1)
