Antiquarisch werk; The Pageant of Peking Comprising sixty-six Vandyck photogravures of Peking and environs. With an introduction by Putnam Weale First edition, published 1920. Folio. Mennie was born in Scotland in 1875 or 76, and arrived in China in about 1899 to become eventually a director of A.S. Watson and Co., the pharmacy business that published the book. Much of his published work is in the pictorialist style – his photogravures being more art objects than documentary photographs, often with rich or soft browns and subtle tones. His subjects evoked a romantic vision of ‘antique China’. It became a worldwide symbol of the brand thanks to its green striped barrel. "Eine der bedeutendsten Quellen aus der Conquistazeit über Land und Leute im La-Plata-Gebiet und landeinwärts bis zum Gran Chaco... die Angaben, die Schmidel über die Zeit der einzelnen Ereignisse, über Entfernungen, Stärke der Verluste, Stammesnamen und Sitten und Bräuche der Indianer gibt, sind fest und sicher abgefaßt" (H. Plischke zur Neuausgabe Graz 1962, S. XVII f.). Stadens anschauliche Schilderung (zuerst erschienen 1557) der Sitten der Ureinwohner gilt als wichtige Quelle für die Ethnografie. "One of the rarest, if not the rarest of early German collections of voyages" (BdM). - Browning throughout, staining or fingerstaining in places, small marginal loss to second title and some leaves (partly repaired), old marginalia in places, small wax stains to 2 pages, closed tear to 1 white leaf, last leaf mounted to inner cover. Old owner's inscription and ms. annotations to front inner cover. Lacking the first title and leaf 6 which are skilfully supplemented in photocopies on old paper. Das erste ist ein früher Druck von Ovids Metamorphosen, übersetzt vom mittelalterlichen Scholastiker Albrecht von Halberstadt (auch Albert oder Albertus, 1180 - 1251) und bearbeitet und bebildert vom Schriftsteller Georg Wickram (ca. 1505 - 1562) und Pfarrer Gerhard Lorich (1485 - 1553). Das zweite Werk ist Fierrabras (oder Fierabras), die erste deutsche Ausgabe einer anonym geschriebenen mittelalterlichen Geschichte eines heidnischen Riesen, der gegen die Ritter des Karl den Großen kämpft und schließlich zum Christentum bekehrt wird. Diese Übersetzung möglicherweise vom Pfalzgrafen Johann II. von Pfalz-Simmern (1492 - 1557) Vom Druckbild und Kollation passt diese Ausgabe von Fierrabras dem VD16-Eintrag nicht. Das dritte Werk ist die Erstauflage einer anonym geschriebenen Sammlung lustiger Anekdoten, die gute Gesprächsführung oder moralische Lehren beibringen sollen. - Ehemaliges Bibliotheksexemplar mit Stempel und Rückensignatur. Einband erheblich berieben mit riesigen Rissen und Fehlstellen sowie zahlreichen Wurmstichen. Vorderdeckel meist nackt. Rücken teils zerstört: Leder von Bünden abgerieben. Innere beider Deckel beschädigt mit großen Fehlstellen. Bindung teils stark angebrochen, bei manchen Blättern fast völlig gebrochen. Meist altersübliche Papierdunkelung, aber manche Blätter mit besonderen Flecken oder Schmutz, insbesondere am Anfang und Ende. Satzspiegel trotzdem gut erhalten. Blätter XLIX-LIII des dritten Werks mit Wurmstichen oben, die den Text kaum beeinträchtigen. Vorsatz fehlt. - Anthology of 3 16th century literary works (Early printing of Ovid's Metamorphoses; Fierrabras; First edition of an anonymously written collection of amusing anecdotes). Former library copy with stamp and spine signature. Binding considerably rubbed with huge tears and missing parts as well as and numerous wormholes. Front cover mostly bare. Spine Partly destroyed: leather rubbed off from frets. Inside of both covers damaged with large missing parts. Binding partly strongly broken, some leaves almost completely broken. Mostly paper darkening usual for age, but some leaves with special stains or dirt, especially at the beginning and end. Type area nevertheless well preserved. Leaves XLIX-LIII of the third work with wormholes at the top, hardly affecting the text. Endpapers missing.
