The work was printed in Macao over a period of eight years, and among the difficulties Morrison faced was the theft of the entire apparatus of italic types, 'stolen before they were landed from the Ship which conveyed them from England' (author's advertisement). We trace a handful of fragmentary copies at auction; complete copies are very rare.

Mariti (Giovanni). 'Mariti's book is one of the most important of all works on Cyprus' (Atabey). The author spent seven years as vice-consul at Larnaca and also travelled widely through the Middle East. The first edition in French was printed in Paris the same year, translated from the first two volumes of the original nine-volume Italian edition (1769-1777). Blackmer speculates that this Neuwied edition is a piracy; Cobham-Jeffery does not assign priority to either 1791 edition.

Presentation set of Schoolcraft's monumental and profusely illustrated survey of the Native American tribes, volumes one to five variously inscribed on behalf of the author, the illustrator Seth Eastman, and two Commissioners of Indian Affairs to Buckingham Smith (1810-1870), diplomat, historian of Spanish exploration in Florida and the Americas, and the first surveyor of the Everglades following Florida's accession to the United States in 1845. Volume one is a first issue, retaining the chromolithographic plates with the imprints of Ackerman, Bowen or Duval, and the unabbreviated title page. An excellent association. In volume three Schoolcraft acknowledges his use of Smith's transcripts of documents held in the Archivo-General, Mexico City, which Smith made during his posting as secretary of legation (1850-2), and of Smith's translation of the 16th-century narrative of Alvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca. In fact, Smith privately supported the criticism directed against Schoolcraft by archaeologist E. G. Squier (1821-1888) from 1854, but Schoolcraft nevertheless helped secure Smith's next posting as secretary of legation in Madrid (1855-8; see Dippie, Catlin and His Contemporaries , p. 254). Inconsistencies in the numbering of the plates have led to records' also calling for 327 or 332 plates, this last figure counting 'plates' 17, 32, 33 and 36 in volume five as individuals, although they appear on two sheets. Allan". Physician and antiquary Dr. Christopher Hunter (1675-1757), apparently assisted John Horsley in compiling his Britannia Romana. The accompanying letter from William Kell thanks the unnamed recipient for "the curious extracts from Horsley's great book" and discusses the etymology of certain place names, saying "Mr. Allan is quite wrong in deriving the name from that of a family. The surnames of persons were taken from the names of places, and not the names of places from those of persons".

Wing describes all three versions as separate editions, and conjectures a date of 1680 for the copies printed for Harris or How, which are undated. ESTC, however, suggests 1682, and the collation is in each case the same, except for four advertisement leaves in How's copies, and the absence of an initial blank in Harris's: the three imprints therefore appear at most to represent separate issues, rather than editions. 'Building on the authority of the Great Charter, this work defended trial by jury and established the persisting legal freedoms based on Magna Carta' (BL, online). Benjamin Franklin is believed to have assisted in the printing of the first American edition in Boston in 1721, and the work subsequently 'had a much longer and more significant reach in the American colonies than in England ... [playing] an important role in spreading concepts about English law, history, government, liberties and especially juries' (Schwoerer, The Ingenious Mr. Henry Care, Restoration Publicist, p. 233).

This is a reissue of the 1609 edition of ’The Faerie Queene’, which would have had a cancel title-page dated 1611 , serving as a collective titlepage for the first collected edition of the author’s works. In this issue of the ’Faerie queen’, stanza 1 on sig. B3r begins "Yo~ug knight," and the catchword on R3r is "She". The colophon is dated 1609. ’The second part of The Faerie Queene’ has a separate titlepage dated 1609. ’A letter of the authors, expounding his whole intention in the course of this worke’ (STC 23086.3) has a caption title, and separate register. In this issue of ’The author’s letter’, the first line of text ends: "Alle-". ’The shepheards calender’ (STC 23093.5) has a separate titlepage dated 1611, separate pagination, and register. ’Colin Clouts’ (STC 23077.3), ’Prothalamion’, ’Amoretti and Epithalamion’, ’Foure Hymnes’, ’Daphnaida’, and ’Complaints containing sundry small poemes of the worlds vanitie’, ’The teares of the muses’, and ’Muiopotmos, or The fate of the butterfly’, all have separate titlepages with the imprint: "At London printed by H.L. for Mathew Lownes", and continuous register. Includes translations of Du Bellay’s ’Les antiquitez de Rome’ and ’Visions’, Vergil’s ’Gnat’, and Petrarch’s ’Visions’.

It is nevertheless highly uncommon, Copac tracing two copies of another edition printed in Lyon the same year, but none of this edition, which is presumed to have priority.
