Garrison Morton, 285 ("First book devoted exclusively to the structure of a single species other than man. Besides being one of the foundation-stones of modern veterinary medicine, it contains a description of the lesser circulation. The admirables plates are by some authorities attributed to Leonardo"); Mennessier, II, 465; Nissen, I, 3514. Two volumes bound together, folio (345x225 mm). I. [4], 250 [i.e. 248] pages. Tornieri Arnaldi Arnaldo. Vicenza, Giacomo Leoni, Giambattista Vendramini Mosca, 1784.In-8° (mm 195x128). 32 pagine, con 16 tavole incise all'acquaforte finemente acquerellate a mano, ripiegate. Frontespizio entro cornice silografica, iniziali e fregi incisi su legno. Title-page within a woodcut border, woodcut initials and ornaments. Marginal waterstains and leaves slghtly soiled, some foxing. Contemporary cardboards, gilt-tooled covers, marbled edges. Slightly abraded, damages to the joints, small tears and losses to the spine. The extremely rare first and only edition of this interesting festival account describing the original Carnival festival occurred in Vicenza in 1784, and enriched by 16 watercoloured plates, raised in silver and in gold. The festivity was celebrated with a sled horse racing on ice, and the horses were magnificently harnessed. Each slide was managed by noble horsemen and ladies belonging to aristocratic families, identified by the numbers -1-30 - printed on the plates. Seen the preciousness of the copy, is quite probable that few copies were printed, and given to the partecipating competitors. For the name of the author - portraited on the last plate on a slide dominated by a hot-air ballon - see Melzi, I, 258. Not in catalogues and specific bibliography on festival books. Caproni-Bertarelli, 111; Olschki Choix, 8129.
