Hindmarsh at the sign of the Black Bull near the Royal Exchange in Cornhill, 1682.⁂ Rare, we can trace only a handful of copies at auction, and no copy since 1984. Also attributed to John Birkenhead, essentially an attack on Parliamentary rule and the likes of Cromwell, the Earl of Pembroke, Henry Marten (the regicide judge) and Sir Samuel Luke in particular. This edition was preceded in English only by John Frampton's rare translation of 1579.

Romantics.- Coleridge (Samuel Taylor) Poems...to which are now added Poems by Charles Lamb, and Charles Lloyd, second edition, woodcut ornaments, Sophia Pemberton and Thomas Manning's copy their ink ownership inscriptions dated 1797 and 1799 to title, contemporary calf-backed boards, vellum corners, upper cover detached, lower cover becoming loose, rubbed, 8vo, Bristol and London, N. Briggs 1797.⁂ A fine association copy, inscribed by two figures on the periphery of the Romantic movement. Sophia Permberton eloped with Charles Lloyd in 1799 (allegedly by proxy with Southey standing in for Lloyd), she was described by de Quincey as "a wife and mother unsurpassed by anybody I have known in either of those characters". Thomas Manning (1772--1840), the first lay Chinese scholar in Europe and the first Englishman to enter Lhasa in Tibet. He was a friend and frequent correspondent of Lamb's and is referenced in his Dissertation upon roast pig.

The vestments controversy was ostensibly concerning clerical dress but grew to encompass the notion of nonconformity in church practices. The debate reached a peak in 1566 with the publication of Robert Crowley's A Briefe Discourse Against the Outwarde Apparel of the Popishe Church to which this is a response commissioned by (and sometimes attributed to) Archbishop Matthew Parker. Motte, 1726.⁂ An attractive copy of Swift's most famous work with annotations by a blue stocking. The volumes are inscribed by Elizabeth Smith, dated June 7th 1806, possibly Elizabeth Smith (1776 - August 1806), the translator, linguist, Biblical and Oriental scholar. Whether this particular Elizabeth Smith or not, the annotator is clearly exceptionally well-read and makes reference to Plato's Republic, Homer, Virgil, the Book of Job, More's Utopia, Pope's Dunciad, Whiston's New Theory of the Earth, Isaac Newton, Edmund Halley and the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. She also identifies some contemporary references and is generally effusive in her praise of the work.

(of 148, lacking a1 (title)), 30 lines (variable) and headline with foliation, Gothic type, 116 half-page woodcuts, most with partial or full early hand-colouring, d6 and g2 repaired tear within text, with minor loss, e1-4 small hole to lower margin, of which 2 repaired, a few small worm holes in register ff. at end, closely trimmed at head, affecting the odd headline, trimmed at fore-margin, affecting printed side-notes, stained, 18th century vellum, stained, 8vo (137 x 97mm.), Augsburg, Johann Schönsperger, 1 April, 1497.⁂ 'the most important of a long line of moralizing works in which the weaknesses and vices of mankind are satirized as follies' (PMM).
