With Childhood Drawings by Jack Butler Yeats Yeats (Jack B.) ‘A Broth of a Boy’ [Michael Joseph Barry]. The ‘‘Kishoge Papers’’, Tales of Devilry and Drollery. Dublin, Gill 1877. First edition. Sm 8vo pictorial boards, much used, inscribed in ink by Fredr. Pollexfen and Jack Yeats, and with characteristic sketches and drawings on a number of pages by the youthful Jack Yeats. In a recent folding cloth case. Fredr. H. Pollexfen, who signs twice on f.f.e.p., was evidently the original owner of this book. Directly under his signature is ‘J.B.Y.’, and opposite, on the glued endpaper, Jack Yeats has signed his full name twice in a childish hand. There are also eight or ten lines of ballad poetry in a pencilled hand, possibly Fred Pollexfen’s. The book itself is a collection of droll stories told in ballad verse. On the half-title is a pencilled drawing, ‘The Irish Bat’; on contents page a drawing of a reclining figure, possibly a tramp; at head of preface, ink signature ‘J. Yeats’; at head of page [1] ‘F.H. Pollexfen’; on p. 31 drawings of a mounted knight and a huntsman; top of p. 35 an ink drawing of a ship; top p. [63] ink drawing of shoe, foot and calf (only). At rear, the blank after p. 202 has drawings of a huntsman, a woman’s head, stars and a pitchfork; on rear e.p.’s caricatured drawings of two men, and a striking ink drawing of a couple dancing or skating – all evidently by the young Jack Yeats, aged perhaps eight or ten, who also signs his name on back of rear e.p. Frederick Henry Pollexfen was the ninth of the 12 Pollexfen children of Sligo, born 1852, eleven years after his sister Susan, who married John Butler Yeats. Her son Jack Yeats, born in 1871, spent most of his childhood in Sligo with his Pollexfen relations. Evidently, he acquired this book from his uncle Fred. There is nothing to suggest that Fred Pollexfen was an artist, and there is no doubt that the sketches in this book are by a youthful Jack Yeats. From his early childhood he drew compulsively, on any paper that came to hand, and even his earliest drawings – as here – often have an element of exaggeration or caricature which is very distinctive. In this he differs from his father, who drew exactly what he saw. One wonders if the Pollexfen household contained copies of Punch. A remarkable survival. Dating from probably the early 1880s, these childhood sketches may be the earliest by Jack Yeats that have been preserved. Jack Yeats’ early sketches (including those sold at Sothebys 2017) are unlike any other childhood drawings we have seen, showing that Jack’s humorous and quizzical view of life took shape very early. Copy No. 1 - Signed by Joyce Joyce (James). Ulysses. John Lane, L. 1936, First UK Edition printed in UK, No.1 of 100 copies bound in full calf vellum and signed by the author, from a total edition of 1000, quarto vellum gilt with Homeric bow (by Eric Gill) on upper and lower covers, t.e.g., other edges untrimmed. Very slight foxing/marking to signature page, a few marks to spine. In the original slipcase designed by Eric Gill with orig. numbered label, the slipcase a little worn at corners and edges but firm and strong. Some damage affecting top half-inch of spine vellum above the title. There is no loss of lettering, affecting its appearance. In our judgement the damage is professionally repairable, and the estimate. We have not previously seen an intact copy of the Eric Gill slipcase, which is strongly made but vulnerable owing to the weight of the volume. One can imagine Joyce’s feelings of pride and joy as he signed this, the very first copy of his great work printed in England. [Slocum & Cahoon 23.]

Huebsdch) 1916, First U.S. Edition, hf. title, blue cloth blind tooled lettering, gilt lettered spine. Good copy. [Slocum & Cahoon A11]. (1) * The American Edition pre-dates the English Edition by one year, which was printed by the Egoist Press.
With an unrecorded Joyce Item? Joyce (James). A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. L., Egoist [1917], First English Edition (from American sheets, with the Huebsch copyright imprint (1916) on rear of t.p. Orig. green cloth stamped in blind, spine cloth separating at lower hinge, but the hinge holding firmly. A little spotting to upper edge. S. & C. 12. Laid in is a leaflet (4pp, single folded sheet) with ‘Extracts from some Press Notices’, printed in Harlesden, dated 1916 and quoting more than 30 notices by reviewers including Ezra Pound, H.G. Wells, Ernest Boyd, The Freeman’s Journal, Irish Times, Irish Book Lover, and various English, Irish, American and Continental journals, one in Greek lettering. Fold marks, a little scuffed. We have not seen this leaflet before. Its authorship is not stated, but it is certainly possible that it was drafted or approved by Joyce and his associates. The publisher (Harriet Weaver) subscribed to a clipping service for Joyce (see S. & C. p. vii), which may explain the great range of reviews. These clippings are now in the Yale University Library. The leaflet is not recorded by S. & C. (1)

Contemporary full speckled calf, volume one skilfully rebacked retaining the original spine which is extra gilt within compartments with morocco title labels. Volume two in the same style but has been rebacked with weak hinges due to the weight of the book.* The register of the lands of England, framed by order of William the Conqueror. It was sometimes termed 'Rotulus Wintoniae',and was the book from which judgment was to be given upon the value, tenures, and services of the lands there in described.A unique record, unmatched in any other country at so early a date. The materials from which it was compiled were collected by Royal Commissioners in the shire courts.This was the first printing of the Domesday book, it was issued without printed title-pages (as with the original ).

A rare survival of this fascinating, idiosyncratic magazine. *[Described as : The most insulting, self-indulgent filled, inaccurate, best informed, most thorough, funniest guide to secondhand bookshops ever published] ... A dapper dresser and vegetarian, pre-Internet Driffield travelled the country attempting to visit every second hand bookshop on a pedal cycle with a wicker basket strapped to the handle bars to hold his purchases, catching the train if distance defeated him. Death threats were not infrequently issued to him, probably with good reason, after the publication of each edition, which struck like acts of vengeance and delighted retribution against the sloppiness of the world that sustained him.

Two 20th century semi abstract pictures. The first a limited edition lino print of an abstract landscape, signed, dated and titled J.D. Ferguson 68, Brighton Beach and numbered 2/4 in ink over white paint on the border, and an early 20th century coloured pencil geometric abstract scene, largest 28cm x 18cm excluding frame. Both framed. Condition Report: The smaller picture is out of its frame. Both frames have marks and damage in places, caused through previous. The larger picture appears to be discoloured in the top right hand corner.

Added is the rare Extra issue published in a small edition of 14 from the late contributions for the first 3 issues. Additional Care issues in the lot are No.6 and No.10.(1) Care 1, March 1982.
