Charles Eames studied architecture for two years at the University of Washington, then began his career working in a studio on residential housing projects. In 1938 he moved to Cranbrook, Michigan, to continue studying architecture and design at the city's Academy of Art. He would eventually teach there, heading the industrial design department. Together with Eero Saarinen, the son of his teacher Eliel Saarinen, he designed the trophy for the Organic Design Award, given by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 1941, after divorcing his first wife, he married his colleague at Cranbrook, Ray Kaiser. Together they settled in Los Angeles, where they would remain for the rest of their lives. In the late 1940s, Ray and Charles designed their home together, known as the "Eames House," now considered a masterpiece of modern architecture. In the 1950s the couple continued to work in architecture and furniture design, pioneering the use of new techniques and materials such as fiberglass and plastic resin in the manufacture of chairs. This policy proved an outstanding success, with sales of the 190 totalling almost two million over the course of its ten-year production life. A conventional front-engine, rear-drive, four-door saloon, the 190 was available with a variety of engines ranging from a 1.8-litre four to a 2.6-litre six, plus 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre diesels. Sports models was not long in coming, the 185bhp 2.3-16 joining the expanding 190 range in the autumn of 1983, to be followed by the even more powerful 2.5-16 in 1985. These cars had been conceived with motor sports in mind and were quipped with 16-valve cylinder heads developed in Britain by Cosworth Engineering, which based the design on that of its immensely successful DFV Formula 1 engine. Produced to meet the homologation requirements of the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft (DTM) touring car race series, limited edition Evolution and Evolution II versions had arrived by the decade's end. This Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evo II DTM was built in 1990 by Team Snobeck to be used by them during 1991, and was further developed throughout that season. Snobeck entered two cars in the 1991 DTM series: one for Jacques Lafitte and the other for Alain Cudini, who had joined Dany Snobeck's team in 1985, competing both in the European and French touring car championships before entering the DTM in 1988. Of the two, Cudini enjoyed by far the better season, ending up 6th - his best result in the DTM championship. Then in predominantly black livery, this car was raced by Cudini before passing to Belgian driver Michel Neugarten for the 1992 and 1993 Belgian Procar seasons with its livery changed to the pink/green colours of Écurie Le Perron. More recently, the car has been refinished in the colours of the Diebels Alt/Zakspeed example campaigned by Dutch driver Kurt Thiim, simply because the owner likes green cars! A model of this car in its Snobeck/Cudini livery was issued by Minichamps. Around 1995-1996, the car was bought by the current owner's race engineer, who has always been an enthusiastic Mercedes-Benz devotee and specialist. He first saw the car on the track in Chimay and bought it later on. Pour toute question concernant le dédouanement, nous vous prions de consulter Le Département automobile de Bonhams ou nos transporteurs agréés.2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG CoupéChassis no. WMXRJ7HAXEA011477AMG, which is now the official performance division of Mercedes-Benz, has a long history of producing high-performance derivatives of Mercedes' standard production vehicles, and these improved versions enjoy an enthusiastic following world-wide, with prominent figures of the motorsports, entertainment, sport, and business communities being counted among aficionados. With the introduction of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG in 2010, the Affalterbach-based firm took a significant step forward. First seen at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show and acknowledged as a tribute to the legendary 300 SL 'Gullwing' coupé of the 1950s – arguably the world's first supercar – the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG was notable as the first car to be designed in-house by AMG. A collectors' item from the day it was announced, the newcomer featured 'Gullwing' doors like its illustrious predecessor and succeeded the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren at the top of the German manufacturer's range. Styled by Mercedes-Benz's Mark Fetherston, the SLS AMG received numerous prestigious design awards, and is the only automobile ever to have won the (gold) Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany. An open roadster version was introduced for 2011.Boasting a chassis/body of mainly aluminium construction, the SLS (Sport Licht Super) was powered by a 6.2-litre V12 engine producing 563bhp initially - the most powerful normally aspirated production car engine of its day - while the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission was similarly state-of-the-art. A rear wing, extendable at high speeds, kept the SLS stable at its near-200mph maximum, while its low weight (3,573lbs) helped the car lap the Mercedes-Benz test track quicker than its SLR McLaren predecessor. Not surprisingly, given its pedigree, the SLS AMG proved very popular with racing drivers, Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton among them, while the list of celebrity owners includes Eddie Murphy, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Al Pacino, Roger Federer, Sylvester Stallone, and Tom Hanks. Several limited edition versions were introduced, including a GT3 racer, leading up to the SLS AMG GT Final Edition of 2014. Mercedes-AMG CEO Tobias Moers has said that there are no plans for a successor, so for the time being the SLS AMG remains the ultimate expression of the noble 'Gullwing' tradition. This example was built to Swiss specification and...
