Auden (W.H.).- Lawrence (T.E.) Seven Pillars of Wi first trade edition signed presentation copy from W.H.Auden to his father with the bookplate of the latter frontsipsiece (detaching) and plates original cloth gilt spine faded with ends slightly worn rubbed 4to 1935. *** Inscription reads "G.A.A./ with love/ from/ Wystan./ August 27th 1935". Along with Christopher Isherwood Auden maintained a deep interest in T.E.Lawrence throughout the 1930s. This culminated in the writing of "The Ascent of F6" in 1937 whose central character was substantially based upon Lawrence.

Large folio, list of subscribers, 8 folding or double-page charts mounted on original guards, contemporary half calf, worn Note: The original edition of Mackenzie`s first and most attractive atlas with eight charts and accompanying sailing directions. The survey was carried out between 1747 and 1749 and Mackenzie used a rigid triangulation framework for the first time so ensuring a hitherto unknown standard of accuracy laying down the coast line. Rare: copies recorded only at BL, Oxford, Edinburgh and National Maritime Museum.

Map on two engraved sheets, printed in red and black, margins worn and repaired with some loss of marginal text and scale at base, 42 by 50cm., world map on verso, some discolouration along inner edge of maps Note: From "Claudi Ptholemaei Alexandrini liber geographicae cum tabulis..." [Colophon] "Venetus per Jacobum Pentium... MDXI". The earliest Venetian edition of Ptolemy is of significance because of the innovative approach of its editor, Bernard Sylvanus of Eboli, who extensively re-drew some of the Ptolemaic maps according to more up-to-date information. The map of the British Isles shows, for the first time, a more correct north-south orientation, Scotland and Ireland become recognisable and the outlines of the south coast of England and Cornwall are much improved.

Many of the Vignettes appearing in the present book have been engraved from original sketches made by Mr Danford in the remote mountain region of the Taurus and other parts of Asia Minor, and to Mrs Danford I am indebted for the roots of several new species of Crocus discovered by her, and also for much valuable information respecting the habitats of Crocuses throughout Asia Minor." Crocus Danfordiae is illustrated on plate 63 and was discovered by Mrs Danford in 1879.
