NO RESERVE Alighieri Dante. Batines I, 75-76; Mambelli, 25; Martini, 29-20; Brunet II, 502; Koch, 7; Sander, 2322.8 ° (160x97 mm). [246] (of 250, wanting first leaves [*] 1-2 with the epistle of Andrea Torresano to Vittoria Colonna and blank leaves H7-8). With three woodcut vignettes in the text of which two double-page depicting the Sito et forma della valle inferna (ff. H4v-H5r), the sins of the infernal circles (ff. H5v-H6r), and a full page with the Purgatory circles (f. H6v). Restorations on the title page, the first papers and the finals with woodcuts, marginal waterstains, some papers with traces of dust. Nineteenth-century Morocco with edges, marbled paper on the covers, gilt titles on the spine, coloured edges. Fictitiously handwritten noted.A rare counterfeit of the Aldine edition of 1515, which reproduces exactly the format, the print character and the leaves number. Plagiarism is probably due to the Forlì-born printer Gregorio de' Gregori, active in Venice and in Fano between 1480 and 1528, working both alone and now with his brother Giovanni de' Gregori, now with Bernardino Stagnino. Batines I, 75-76; Mambelli, 25; Martini, 29-20; Brunet II, 502; Koch, 7; Sander, 2322.

NO RESERVE Cacherano di Bricherasio Giovanni Francesco Maria. Pagine xiii, [1], lxxx, 406, [2]. Tre tavole incise su rame ripiegate fuori testo. Esemplare completo dell'errata. Ottimo esemplare. Kress Italian 537.8° (199x134 mm). XIII, [1], 406, [2] pages. Three copper engraved plates, folding, out of text. Copy complete of the errata. Contemporary vellum over pasteboards, inked title on the spine. Sprickled red and azure edges. An amazing copy. On the front pastedown inked note 'L 803= Roma [...] :40:'.First edition of this work dedicated to Pope Pio VI, with which Cacherano di Bricherasio outlines a practical and experimental way of the will of reform demonstrated by the pontiff. The first part of the Treaty starts from the need to change the whole relationship between the city and the countryside : Rome was too big, too populous , without factories and craft and lived only of the administration proceeds , the courts , the luxury. His situation was greatly exacerbated by the fact that the surrounding area was "mal coltivato o affatto incolto". The State had to rake in at least part of the Agro Romano , dividing it , taking on the task of cleaning up and settlement. Throughout the second part of the work , however , it is devoted to describing the villages that would be so constructed , with their churches , their pastors and doctors , taken from Roman convents and hospitals , thus making them finally useful and active. Kress Italian 537.

I. Adams E, 673. II. On the second work: Library marks on the title-page, and some contemporary manuscript notes throughout.First edition of this two important works by Erasmus to be inscribed in his theological diatribe with Martin Luther. In fact Erasmus wrote, therefore, in defence of the freedom on the will, an attack on Luther, entitled: Diatribae de libero arbitrio. The work, it may be said, was couched in a calm and dignified style. Though by no means sufficiently profound in its theological reasoning, the proofs are drawn with skill from the Bible and from reason. Luther's reply was the De servo arbitrio (1524), henceforth the official programme of the new movement. Starting from the third chapter of the Epistle to the Romans, it teaches the absolute incompetency of man in his fallen state to perform moral acts; no franker antithesis to the humanistic ideal could be imagined. Erasmus replied in a work entitled Hyperaspistes, but without effect. Luther ignored this reply, except in private letters in which he showed much irritation.I: Adams E, 673. II: Vander Haeghen I, 20; Kossmann 178; Bezzel 1263; De Reuck 152; Adams E, 595; BMC VIII.927(948)
