John Lennon, In His Own Write, Jonathan Cape 30 Bedford Square London, early edition, signed by John Lennon to the opening page in blue ink, the opposing side inscribed in another hand 'Foyles Luncheon, Dorchester Hotel 23rd April 1964'. Note: This whimsical book of surrealist poems, drawings and short stories was the first solo endeavour by any of The Beatles. Originally published in March 1964, it was a huge success – reportedly selling 50,000 copies on the first day of its release in England. To celebrate the books success, Lennon was invited to a literary luncheon hosted by Foyle’s at the prestigious Dorchester Hotel in London, for which he took a break from filming A Hard Day’s Night. Also in attendance were the Earl of Arran, Arthur Askey, Harry Secombe, Mary Quant, Helen Shapiro and a crowd of press people amongst others. Unfortunately, Lennon was not aware that he was expected to make a speech or that the event was anything more than a casual lunch; and according to his wife Cynthia they were both painfully hungover. When the moment arrived, with the press and attendees waiting with bated breath to hear from the ‘intelligent’ Beatle, a terrified John Lennon stood and said "Er, thank you all very much, and God bless you." Apparently the disappointment was palpable and it was seen as a typical Lennon snub of the establishment, but he tried to make up for it by signing copies of his book – including this volume for a relative of the current vendor who was in attendance.

The Homecoming WW2 multiple signed WW2 Robert Taylor print. 34 x 24 inches. Numbered 33/600. ‘The Homecoming’ remains one of Robert Taylor’s most dramatic and creative pieces, capturing, as it does, a moving scene in 1942. A small group of stubby-nosed Fw190s from III./JG2, en-route to their home base to the north-east of Brest, have caught sight of a small group of U-boats from the Kriegsmarine’s 9th Submarine Flotilla returning to port. As they are at the end of their coastal sweep, the JG2 pilots decide to welcome the U-boats home and give the submariners a suitable fly-past salute. For the tired crews this was a moving ‘homecoming’ to the U-boat crews after such an arduous spell out in the North Atlantic. The Signatures For collectors with an interest in U-boats, acquiring the original signatures of U-boat captains is a difficult one, especially of those with a Knight’s Cross to their name! With the average life expectancy of a U-boat crew member of just a few weeks, U-boat commanders who survived the war were a rarity, especially in 1999 when this beautiful piece was published. The fact that three such men signed the edition published of this remarkable painting is just one of the reasons why the piece met with such great critical acclaim at the time. It is also why pristine copies are in so much demand today. First there was Siegfried Koitschka who first served under the legendary Erich Topp on U-552 before taking command himself. As captain of U-616 from 1942 to 1944 he undertook nine patrols lasting 204 days. Then there was Heinrich Schroeteler who commanded U-667 on four patrols into the North Atlantic and, at the end of the war, was captain of U-1023. And, finally, Helmut Witte, commander of U-159 who, on four patrols from 1941 to 1943, sank nearly 120,000 tons of Allied shipping. And if these three commanders were not enough of an attraction, three top Fw190 Aces also signed the prints. Oberst ADOLF DICKFELD KC WITH OAK LEAVES, Kapitanleutnant SIEGFRIED KOITSCHKA, Oberleutnant ERHARD NIPPA KC, Major ERICH RUDORFFER KC WITH OAK LEAVES AND SWORDS, Kapitanleutnant HEINRICH SCHROETELER, Korveitenkapitan HELMUT WITTE. Condition report A couple of creases to lower RH corner 2 and 5 inches and small one near wing of plane, not visible looked at straight on. small scratch on back of print not visible from front. This is very scarce print. All autographs are genuine hand signed and come with a Certificate of Authenticity. We combine postage on multiple winning lots and can ship worldwide. UK postage from £4.99, EU from £6.99, Rest of World from £8.99.
