The author was the elder brother of Jean-François Champollion-Figeac, decipherer of the Rosetta Stone. The second is the earliest monograph on the Maison-Carrée of Nismes, the best preserved Roman temple in Gaul. Seguier deciphered the inscription revealing the dedication to two grandsons of Augustus who died young. The temple inspired Thomas Jefferson in his design for the Virginia State Capitol.

Pages iv and v in the preliminaries are mis-numbered xi and x.

A Descriptive Catalogue of the Chinese Collection...at St.George's Place, Hyde Park Corner, London, first English edition, wood-engraved frontispiece and 7 plates, some light spotting, slightly browned, original blind-stamped green cloth titled in gilt, a little rubbed and stained, spine faded, [Cordier 79], 8vo, 1842.⁂ The first is a scarce monograph on the Eastern antiquities in the collection of the brothers Bernardo and Jacopo Nani in Venice, mostly concerning the iconographically complex Chinese Amita Buddha figure carved in soapstone illustrated in the plate.The collection of "Ten Thousand Chinese Things" was formed by Nathan Dunn, an American tea-trader in China, with the aim of educating Westerners in the ways and arts of China. It was first exhibited in Philadelphia and then in London, to rave reviews and vast audiences, but when it was brought over here again to coincide with the Great Exhibition of 1851 it was not so well-received and most of it ended up being auctioned at Christie's.

It refutes the idea that Christianity was the cause of many terrible afflictions which had troubled the Roman empire, including pestilence, droughts, wars, storms and famine. It is one of very few books from this Roman press. Provenance: Royal Library Copenhagen, duplicate (ink stamp to title and inventory number 249, changed to 98 in pencil to front pastedown).
