Austen (Jane) Pride and Prejudice: a Novel... Egerton, Military Library, Whitehall, 1813.⁂ A handsome set of Austen's most famous and best-loved novel. Austen wrote Pride and Prejudice between October 1796 and August 1797 (like her protagonist Elizabeth Bennet, the author was not yet twenty-one). Initially titled First Impressions, the novel was submitted to the publisher Cadell who rejected it by return of post. Over the following years the novel was substantially rewritten as well as undergoing a change of title, the latter likely precipitated by Margaret Holford's novel First Impressions published in 1800. The copyright was eventually published by Egerton for £110 in 1812 and published in January 1813 in an edition of approximately 1,500 copies.

Surtees (Robert Smith) Handley Cross, or Jorrocks's Hunt, first illustrated edition in the original 17 parts, 17 hand-coloured etched plates by John Leech, wood-engraved illustrations, part 7 with advertisement slip for The Newcomes, part 15 with only 2pp. advertisements (of 4pp.), otherwise with all inserts as called for by Schwerdt, original pictorial wrappers with advertisements, part 17 lower wrapper neatly supplied from part 7, a few neat repairs to spines, but in effect a bright and excellent set, preserved in folding cloth chemise (with book labels to Samuel Henry Austin and Lucius Wilmerding) and straight-grain morocco pull-top box with gilt hunting motifs to spine, [Schwerdt II p.234; Tooley 473], 8vo, 1853-54.
[Surtees (Robert Smith)] Mr Facey Romford's Hounds, first edition in the original 12 parts, 24 hand-coloured etched plates by John Leech and Hablot K.Browne, wood-engraved illustrations, with all advertisements/slips as called for by Schwerdt except for notice of Lever's Martins of Cro' Martin in part 6, and with additional inserts to parts 1, 2 and 12, original pictorial wrappers with advertisements, part 12 with repairs to lower wrapper, the odd neat repair to spines, some light creasing, but a sharp and excellent set generally, preserved in custom morocco-backed drop-back box, [Schwerdt II p.237; Tooley 475], 8vo, 1864-65.
