WWI – Manfred von Richtofen – ‘The Red Baron’ Der Rote Kampfflierger first edition 1917 signed to inside cover in pencil by von Richtofen ‘Frhr v Richthofen Rittmeister’. Excessively rare. This was Richtofen’s autobiography written in October 1917 while he was recovering from a serious head injury following an engagement with Captain Donald Cunnell of 20 Squadron RFC (who was killed a few days later). Von Richtofen wrote the book on the instructions of the German propaganda division and was heavily censored and edited. He later repudiated the book saying that it was ‘too arrogant’ and that he was ‘no longer that kind of person’ but he was not able to produce a second and revised edition as he was killed the following April. We have only been able to trace one further signed copy of this book appearing at auction in the last 25 years (lot 221 Sotheby’s sale May 28th 1986)

WWII – Hitler – Mein Kampf the excessively rare English translation produced by the Nazis. This copy bearing the stamp of the Stalag 357 Prisoner of War Camp. We have been unable to trace another copy of this version of Mein Kampf on the market at the present time. The fact that it has been stamped with the mark of a POW camp could indicate that it was intended as a means of propaganda to turn gullible British POWs towards the Nazi cause. Stalag 357 was famous for the ‘long march’ when in March 1945 after the allies have crossed the Rhine 12 000 POWs were forced to march to a ‘destination unknown’ in columns of 2 000 strong. The men were hungry cold and tired out and Warrant Officer James ‘Dixie’ Deans who had been elected as the POWs leader finally persuaded the German command to let him go to find the allied advancing troops – he eventually reached the allied lines and thus Stalag 357 became one of the first to be liberated – though not before the RAF thinking the columns of men were German troops had opened fire on them killing 60. India – Punjab - history of the Sikhs Rare 1849 ‘suppressed’ First edition in original blind stamped clot binding. The first complete non-bias history of the Sikhs written by Capt J D Cunningham of the British Indian Army. The account was seen as the most honest account of the history of the Sikhs with Cunningham even stating that Sikh Generals were in the pay of the British in the First Sikh War. For this reason this 1849 first edition was suppressed by Dalhousie and is most rare. Cunningham was ordered to revise the book and was demoted causing his death soon after. The book is widely seen as the epitome Sikh study and this edition is extremely scarce especially in original blind stamped cloth binding. Professional repair to the upper spine otherwise very fine complete with map hand coloured in outline.
