Pages 20-25 comprise his letter to his mother, written 2 days after the fateful episode recorded by Tennyson (printed on a leaf at the end): "Dear Mama, I write you a line to allay any fears you may have about me, as you will see by the Times that the Light Cavalry Brigade were let into a sort of Chillianwallah trap and cut to pieces."
