Geoponica [Latino]. Constantini Caesaris selectarum praecetionum, de Agricultura Libri viginti, Iano Cornario medico physico interprete... Basel, Hieronymus Froben, marzo 1540.In-8° (mm 162x114). Lievi fioriture marginali. Legatura moderna in pergamena, dorso liscio. Tagli screziati in rosso. Adams C-865; VD16 C-1415; B.IN.G. 918.8° (162x114 mm). Collation: a-z8, A-B8 (lacking fols. B7 and B8). 385, 11 of [15] pages. Woodcut printer's device on the title-page and at the end. Copy in fair condition, the first three leaves repaired, wormholes to the blank outer margin of the first quire. Light marginal foxing. Modern vellum, smooth spine. Edges mottled red. An early hand had inked the title on the tail-edge. A few marginal annotations, possibly in a 18th-century hand, especially in the Books VII e VIII, devoted to wine-making. Third Latin edition of the famous Geoponika, a Byzantine compilation on agriculture which was at the age attributed to Emperor Constantinus VII Porphyrogenitus. It is now generally thought that the work is largely based on an earliest compilation by Cassianus Bassus. The German physician and humanist Jan Cornarius (ca. 1500-1558) was responsible for the Latin version, which is relied on a Greek manuscript supplied by Matthaeus Aurogallus. The first edition of Cornarius's translation had appeared in 1538. Adams C-865; VD16 C-1415; B.IN.G. 918.

The first edition had appeared, in three volumes, in Naples between 1791 and 1795. The work gives a precious analysis of the rural economy in southern Italy. The lot also offers the Scelta di notizie interessanti l'agricoltura, a remarkable collection issued in Naples between 1812 and 1814, and then followed by a second series for the years 1814-1818. Curiously in this set , the title-page of Tomo VI - seemingly lacking at the time of bonding - is replaced with the title-page opening the Tomo XVII of the second series, 'adapting' the tome numbering (the Roman figures X and I have been carefully erased) but bearing however the imprint 'Napoli, 1818. Norman 1335.The present work, largely composed by Alexandre-Gui Pingre (1711-1796) and Charles Messier (1730-1817) is the report of a voyage in the frigate l'Aurore, fitted out by Courtanvaux at his own expense, to assess the various competitors for the prize offered by the French Academie des Sciences for the first successful method of accurately measuring longitude. The main contender was the Horloger du Roi, Pierre Le Roy (1717-1785). He had invented a completely original marine chronometer in the 1750s, which he perfected over the next decade and presented to Louis XV in 1766. In 1767 Le Roy entered his machine, which "embodied all the principles upon which later marine chronometers were constructed", in the competition. The voyage between Le Havre and Amsterdam was the first practical trial to which it was subjected. Le Roy was awarded a double prize in 1768 for his chronometer and for his memoir describing it. The first four chapters give a detailed account of the different methods employed from the 15th to the 18th centuries to determine longitude. The rest of the work describes the voyages and the experiments carried out, and finishes with a description of Le Roy's marine clocks. (1)
