Voragine, Jacobus de. The Golden Legend. 1507. 403 leaves (of 406?) lacking 1Y4,Y5 & 3D (black letter) 8, folio 382. 87 woodcuts in the text and numerous woodcut initial letters. Contemporary ink marginalia, some ink underlining. Some minor worming. The first 5 leaves and the last 6 leaves re-margined, a few other leaves with missing corners, some with replaced corners and a couple with minor tears. The colophon leaf trimmed and laid down. Collation: The signatures are in eights lettered: 1a-i; k-t; v, x, y, z; 2A-I, K-U,X,Y,Z; [Black letter] 3A-E(vi). Lacking 1y4-5, 3Dviii and Evii & viii (?). Nineteenth century full calf binding, rubbed and worn, the joints starting. * This appears to be the only surviving copy with the following last lines in the printed colophon “. . . Whiche werke was fynyffhed the fourth daye of Septembre. The yere of our lorde M. CCCCC. & vii. / Emprynted at Londõ in Fletestrete in the Sygne of the sonne. ByWynkyn de Worde. ” This leaf also has De Worde’s device printed on it. In the copies held in the Guildhall Library in London and at Lambeth Palace Library the colophon has Pynson’s device and the final line reads: “Emprynted at Londõ in Fletestrete in the Sygne of the George. ByRycharde Pynson. ” Hodnett (1973, p. 21) states “Two books make 1507 notable. In that year De Worde and Pynson turned from rivalry to co-operation and brought out jointly new editions of the Legend aurea on 4 Sept. and, sometime after 13 Sept. , the Boke named the Royall. Though Pynson’s name and dev ce are in the only perfect copy of the former, the one at Lambeth, and in some copies of the latter, the type in both instances is De Worde’s. All the cuts in the Royal Book are his, and . . . so are all but five of the seventy cuts in the Legend aurea. ” Maitland (1843) gives a full description of the Lambeth copy (pp. 77-78) and adds a foot note (note T pp. 365-367) where after stating that “. . . I may be exposing my ignorance by speaking of this work as unknown. The truth is, however, that I have not found any notice of it;” He then compares it to the 1527 edition. The number of known copies has (with this copy) been extended from seven to eight. The other seven being held as follows, two in London in the Guildhall and Lambeth Palace Libraries, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Harvard, Princeton and a copy that was sold in Christie’s (London) in 2008. The Lambeth copy (which contains 466 leaves including a woodcut frontispiece, a table of contents to the Golden Legend and a final colophon leaf) is generally accepted to be the “only possibly complete copy” (Farrell 2006, p. 483). The first sixty leaves commence with a life of Adam and Eve and it has a “Folio primo” first leaf. These sixty leaves are lacking in the Cambridge, Edinburgh, Harvard and Princeton copies and Farrell suggests that “perhaps (they) were never issued in some copies. ” That they were never issued with this copy is partially evidenced by the condition of the first and last few leaves which were, prior to the nineteenth century binding and repairs never part of a larger work. Only the two copies held in London have colophon leaves and both of them have Pynson’s name. The copy offered for sale here commences on a. 1. with a running title “Thadvent of our Lorde. Folio primo. ” With the lacking leaves this would give a total of 406 leaves. The distressed states of the other remaining copies (all of which are lacking their colophon leaves) would make this the most complete copy of this (variant) issue of the book. Whether this is the first or second issue or simply a “rogue” issue printed by De Worde must, at the present time, remain a matter for speculation. Farrell (1966). Farrell, Mark R. In Princeton University Library Chronicle Volume LXVII, Number 2,Winter 2006. Hodnett (1973). Hodnett, Edward. English Woodcuts 1480-1535. Oxford, 1973. Maitland (1843). Maitland, S. R. A List of Some of the Early Printed Books in the Archiepiscopal Library at Lambeth. 1843.

His plantations were reckoned in 1758 to be worth at least 10 000l...He proposed to vest his gardens in a body of trustees who were annually to dispose of the produce and devote the proceeds to the creation of a fund. When this fund should reach 1 500l. the interest was to be applied to the decoration of the church at Langton the providing an organ and the support of an organist and schoolmaster; when it should reach 4 000l. a village hospital was to be founded and advowsons were to be bought to enable the trustees to reward deserving clergymen by preferment.” Further plans included a library picture gallery hospital for women and finally a choral college at Oxford. “In 1777 the year before his death the annual income amounted to 190l. 17s. which was regularly invested till in 1863 it had risen to about 900l. The trustees then applied to the court of chancery.” DNB Despite not attaining the heights of Hanbury`s vision a charity in his name still exists today.
