Novemb. 1644. being the Birth Day of King Charles, first edition, title within typographic border (just trimmed at foot), woodcut illustration on title repeated on B1 verso, woodcut diagrams, decorations and initials, modern calf-backed marbled boards, [Wing L2245], 4to, Printed for John Partridge and Humphry Blunden, 1645.⁂ Scarce fiery republican pamphlet, published on 14 June 1645, the day of the battle of Naseby - a great Parliamentarian victory. Lilly, a noted astrologer since the 1630s, interprets the apparition of three suns as decidedly favouring the parliamentary cause.

Extending to the end of the first yeare of his raigne, first edition, woodcut device with fleur-de-lys on title, woodcut decorations, lacking final blank leaf, a few corners and margins renewed, on final leaf just touching pagination, occasional soiling and water-staining, some ink marginalia, modern blue morocco, gilt, g.e., joints cracking, [STC 12995], 4to, Imprinted...by John Woolfe, 1599.⁂ There were a number of later counterfeit printings with incorrect spelling of printer's name (ie Wolfe) and/or a square of fleurons as device on title-page. The first 100 pages primarily deal with the reign of Richard II.Provenance: Max and Virginia Hayward (bookplate and gilt monogrammed arms to covers).

Flying Dragon in Scotland.- [Miraculum signum coeleste: a discourse of those miraculous prodigies...], first edition, lacks title, woodcut frontispiece and final blank, possibly lacking leaves after I8 (p.128), woodcut illustration of dragon, snake and knight in armour on C7r, diagram on D2, a few headlines shaved, first and last leaves browned, contemporary sheep, worn and stained, [Wing M 2218A; ESTC R231106], 8vo, [1658].⁂ Exceedingly rare work, possibly by John Gadbury, with ESTC locating the Folger copy only, which also lacks leaves after p.128 (sig. I8). As well as the dragon over Scotland (November 22nd 1656) the work includes a double column chronological table of prodigies from the birth of Christ, eg in 1104 "Swarms of Butterflies. Fiery Darts. Strange fiery worms in the aire. Burning Torches and Darts. Fiery Battails, both of Horse and Foot, seen in the aire. Prodigies were mighty frequent this year" in the column headed "The kinds of Prodigies"; and "Brandenburg taketh Nuremberg, and cometh to Ratisbone. The Polonians and Russians have a tedious War. The Dominions of the Moravians and Prussians are invaded by Bolestaus. Denmark invaded, and the King defeated. The King of Jerusalem overcoms the Saracens with a great slaughter." in the column headed "Their Effects".

Massinger (Philip) The Unnaturall Combat. A Tragedie, first edition, small hole to K2 affecting a couple of words of text, light foxing, later calf, rebacked and edges rubbed, [STC 17643; Pforzheimer 682], 4to, Printed by E.G. for John Waterson, 1639.⁂ The play's theme of incest has undoubtedly stifled its popularity and revival appeal, though T.S. Eliot praised its "deft handling of suspense" and "theatrical skill". Provenance: Bridgewater Library (large bookplate to front free endpaper).

The work by mathematician John Speidell (1600-34), a follower of John Napier who made important contributions to the calculation of logarithms, is useful "in the solution of Propositions of both the globes in Dialling, Fortification, and Navigation, with hights and distances..."Provenance: Spence Scientific Library, Greenock (ink stamp to verso of dedication leaf).

Also to the Jews and Turks throughout the World, first edition, foxed, modern dark green crushed morocco, lettered in gilt, spine faded, [Wing F1806; Sabin 25350], 4to, 1673.⁂ Written by the founder of the Society of Friends soon after his return to England from America and two years before his Cain against Abel, a more direct attack on the persecution of the New England Quakers.Provenance: Charles Roberts (bookplate); Roderick Terry (bookplate, his sale at Anderson Galleries in 1935); Caroline Newton (bookplate).

Civil War.- New Marriage (A), Between Mr. King, and Mrs. Parliament. The banes forbidden by Captaine Army, with the Grounds and Reasons he gives for the same, first edition, 8pp., interleaved, eight lines of verse on title between two typographical rules, below which are a row of woodcut crowned rose, thistle, fleur-de-lys, and harp, all but the thistle repeated with ornaments at top of p.3, upper margin of title trimmed close, just touching letter "A" and on next leaf just touching pagination, later vellum-backed boards, [Wing N665], 4to, 1648.⁂ Very rare satire with ESTC recording copies at BL, LSE and Newberry only. This seemingly the only copy in auction records, its last appearance being in 1993 at the Fairfax sale, bought by Lawson. Provenance: Fairfax of Cameron (bookplate)

Marvell (Andrew) The Rehearsall Transpros'd: The Second Part, first edition, with initial licence-to-print leaf, lacking final blank, bookplate of Giles Lyttons Strachey, scattered foxing and browning, last few gatherings with very small worming to lower margin, hinges repaired, later half calf, rebacked, retaining much of original backstrip, [Wing M882], 8vo, for Nathaniel Ponder at the Peacock in Chancery Lane near Fleet-Street, 1673.⁂ The second part of Marvell's witty attack on the Anglican cleric Samuel Parker, published in the preceding year. Marvell's work had elicited several responses, including from Parker himself.
