STENDHAL: (1783-1842) Marie-Henri Beyle. French writer considered one of the early and foremost practitioners of realism, whose works include Le Rouge et le Noir (1830). A.L.S., M. Beyle, one page, 4to, n.p., 10th November 1831, to the publisher Monsieur Levavasseur, in French. Stendhal states that Monsieur Colomb has not received the one hundred francs from Levavasseur and remarks 'Je vous prie de reparer cet oubli et de terminer cette petite affaire par des a compte….' (Translation: 'Please correct this omission and end this little affair with a down payment…..') further informing his correspondent that he purchased an edition of The History of the French Revolution by Thiers at a cost of 35 francs, adding that Monsieur Colomb could return the Paris edition to him, and concluding by sending 'Bien des compliments a l'auteur de Fragoletta' (Translation: 'Many compliments to the author of Fragoletta'). With address panel in Stendahl's hand to the verso and with the small remnants of a red wax seal. Some light uniform age toning and a few minor stains, G Adolphe Thiers (1797-1877) French statesman and historian who served as Prime Minister of France in 1836 and 1840 and later as President of France 1871-73. His celebrated Histoire de la Revolution franciase, the first major history in French of the Revolution, was published in ten volumes from 1823-27 and was highly praised by French critics. Henri de Latouche (1785-1851) French poet and novelist whose novel Fragoletta ou Naples et Paris en 1799 (1829) attained a success of notoriety.

Book signed and inscribed, being a soft cover French edition of the three-act play La Machine a ecrire ('The Typewriter'), First Edition published by Gallimard, Paris, 1941, The limited edition copy, on Alfa paper, is numbered 101, the limitations page stating, in part, 'cent dix exemplaires sur Alfa......dont cent exemplaires numerotes de 1 a 100, et dix exemplaires hors commerce numerotes de 101 a 110' (Translation: 'one hundred and ten copies on Alfa….[paper]….including one hundred copies numbered from 1 to 100, and ten private copies numbered from 101 to 110'). CHURCHILL WINSTON S.: (1874-1965) British Prime Minister 1940-45, 1951-55. Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1953. Book signed and inscribed, being a folio softcover edition of Winston Churchill - The Greatest Figure of Our Time, edited by Bruce Ingram, First edition published by The Illustrated London News, London, 1954. Issued as an Eightieth Year tribute to Churchill, the volume is profusely illustrated and includes twelve colour plates and four gravure plates and with sections of text devoted to Churchill in Parliament, and in War, Churchill the man, and his place in history. Signed by Churchill in fountain pen ink to the plain recto of the frontispiece illustration, 'To P. G. Oates from Winston S. Churchill', and dated 1954 in his hand. An unusual volume to find signed. Some very light, minor age wear, VG Peter Geoffrey Oates (1919-2007) British civil servant who worked in the Prime Minister's office at 10 Downing Street from 1951, firstly as private secretary to Attlee, and later to Winston S. DODGSON CHARLES LUTWIDGE: (1832-1898) Lewis Carroll. English author, poet and mathematician whose works include Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865). A rare signed and inscribed printed leaflet entitled An Easter Greeting to Every Child who Loves Alice, four pages, 12mo, n.p., 11th September 1877. The leaflet takes the form of a letter addressed to Dear Child and was privately printed for the author in Oxford in 1876, the opening text stating 'Please to fancy, if you can, that you are reading a real letter, from a real friend whom you have seen, and whose voice you can seem to yourself to hear wishing you, as I do now with all my heart, a happy Easter'. This first edition first printing is on paper bearing a partial 'E Towgood Fine' watermark and features the word 'My' in Roman type face, instead of italics, at line twelve of the third page. Signed by Carroll with the rarer form of his signature in his characteristic mauve coloured ink to the cover, 'Edith from Lewis Carroll' and dated 11th September 1877 in his hand. A couple of very light, extremely minor creases, otherwise VG Copies of the present leaflet, which have previously been described as 'the rarest of the Carroll items excepting the first issue of Alice', were originally printed with the intention of having them inserted into specially bound presentation copies of The Hunting of the Snark, however Dodgson is also known to have given away individual copies to his young friends, as would appear to have been the case with the present example.
TRUMBO DALTON: (1905-1976) American screenwriter of Roman Holiday (1953) and other Hollywood movies, Academy Award winner. Trumbo was one of the Hollywood Ten and refused to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1947 during their investigation of alleged Communist influences in the motion picture industry. Book signed, being a hardback edition of Hollywood on Trial by Gordon Kahn, First Edition published by Boni & Gaer, New York, 1948. Signed by Trumbo in blue ink with his name alone to the front free endpaper and also signed by Adrian Scott (1911-1972) American screenwriter and film producer, one of the Hollywood Ten who was blacklisted by Hollywood movie studio bosses. Further signed by Gordon Kahn (1902-1962) American author and screenwriter who was blacklisted during the McCarthy era. Signed ('Gordon Kahn') in black fountain pen ink to the title page. Bound in grey boards with dark green title to the cover and spine. Lacking the dust jacket. MONTGOMERY B.L.: (1887-1976) British Field Marshal of World War II. A highly unusual book signed, being a hardback edition of The Memoirs of Field-Marshal The Viscount Montgomery of Alamein, K.G., First edition published by Collins, London, 1958, signed ('Montgomery of Alamein F.M.') by Montgomery in fountain pen ink to the front free endpaper and dated November 1958 in his hand. Additionally signed by Spike Milligan (1918-2002) Irish actor and comedian. Milligan has signed his name in bold black ink, also to the front free endpaper, beneath a statement in his hand, in full, 'I wrote - enclosing this book, saying - I had done his bidding during the war - would he now do mine and sign this book - within 48 hours it was signed and returned'. To one of the inside pages of illustrations, featuring photographs of Montgomery's father and mother, and one of the young Monty aged nine years, Milligan has added a few brief annotations, making disparaging remarks about Montgomery's parents and the observation 'OK' alongside the photograph of the juvenile future Field Marshal. Lacking the dust jacket and with some light overall age wear and minor foxing and staining, G Spike Milligan served as a signaller (Gunner Milligan 954024) in D Battery (later 19 Battery), 56th Heavy Regiment, Royal Artillery, during World War II. The unit saw action as part of the First Army in the North African campaign and then in the succeeding Italian campaign. Milligan was appointed lance bombardier and was about to be promoted to bombardier when he was wounded in action at the Battle of Monte Cassino in 1944 and subsequently hospitalised.

VOLNEY COUNT OF: (1757-1820) Constantin François de Chasseboeuf, French Philosopher, Abolitionist, Writer and Politician. Author of “The Ruins: Or a Survey of the Revolutions of the Empires”. He assumed the name of “Volney”, created as a contraction of “Voltaire” and “Ferney”. Imprisoned during the Jacobin Club triumph, he could escape the guillotine. A good A.L.S., `Volney´, two pages, 4to, Paris, 24th May 1794, to citizen Salliard, his editor, in French. Volney expresses his discontent with the behaviour shown by his correspondent Salliard, the Parisian librarian of the Quai des Augustins, regarding the publication of his work, stating in part `…tu m´avais alors informé que ma première edition de “La Loi Naturelle” tirait vers sa fin, que tu avais en main le benefice de 600 exemplaires, que les 600 derniers ne pouvaient tarder de s´écouler, qu´il fallait se presser de recommence rune seconde edition, que tu m´en envoyerais incéssament les épreuves… aujourd´hui l´on m´annonce de ta part que des discussions avec les Didot imprimeurs, non seulement t´empêchent de rien terminer soit pour l´apurement du compte, soit pour l´impression, et que même tu me déconseilles d´achever l´édition; mais Citoyen voila une dépense faite; sans ton conseil je ne l´eusse pas entreprise; est-il juste qu´aujourd´hui elle me tombe en pure perte?´ (Translation: “…you had at that time informed me that my first edition of “La Loi Naturelle” was nearing its end, that you had in hand the benefit of 600 copies, that the last 600 could not be long in selling, that we had to hurry to start a second edition again, that you would send me the proofs incessantly... today I am told that discussions with the Didot printers, not only prevent you from finishing anything either because of the clearance of the account, either because of printing issues, and that even you advise me not to complete the edition; but Citizen here is an expense made; without your advice I would not have undertaken it; is it fair that today the whole falls on me as a full loss?”) Volney further asks his correspondent and wonders how is it that he was not informed of anything till now, and in order not to permit that the edition troubles go worst, and clearly not trusting Salliard, instructs what he wants him to do, saying `…il est donc evident par le fait que c´est à lui que tu remets et que je dois remettre la manutention de mes intérêts, en consequence je te prie, cher Concitoyen, de vouloir bien compter en ses mains le benefice qui me revient de la vente de la première Edition, et même de lui remettre ce qui peut en rester d´exemplaires…´ (Translation: “…it is therefore evident by the fact that it is to him that you entrust and that I must entrust also the maintenance of my interests, consequently I beg you, dear fellow citizen, to put in his hands the benefit which is due to me from the sale of the first edition, and even to give him what may remain of copies...”) With integral blank leaf. Paper bearing a “J. Honig & Zoonen” watermark. The work Volney refers to The Law of Nature, would be re-edited in 1890. Also known as Catéchisme du Citoyen Français (“Catechism of the French Citizen”) English translations of Volney's Ruins began appearing within a year or so of its first French edition, but sometime during Volney's stay in the United States, he and Thomas Jefferson entered into a secret arrangement whereby Jefferson agreed to make a new English translation of the work. Volney visited Monticello for two weeks during June 1796. The two men also met on several occasions at the American Philosophical Society. Jefferson was President of the APS at the time and sponsored Volney's induction into the organization. These meetings provided the two men with ample opportunity to conceive and discuss the project. Jefferson appreciated the book's central theme - that the empires rise if government allows enlightened self-interest to flourish. This theme, Jefferson believed, represented an excellent summary of the Enlightenment-based principles upon which the U.S. was founded. However, Jefferson insisted that his translation be published only for certain readers, due to the book's controversial religious content. Jefferson was preparing to make a bid for the Presidency of the United States in 1800; he was worried his Federalist opponents would attack him as an atheist, if it were known he translated Volney's supposedly heretical book. According to the evidence discovered, Jefferson translated the invocation plus the first 20 chapters of the 1802 Paris edition of Volney's Ruins. These first 20 chapters represent a review of human history from the point of view of a post-Enlightenment philosopher. Presumably, Jefferson then became too occupied with the Presidential campaign and didn't have time to finish the last four chapters of the book. Volney concludes the book with a call for an absolute separation of Church and State

An exceptional book signed and inscribed, being a hardback edition of Casablanca: Script and Legend by Howard Koch, First edition published by The Overlook Press, Woodstock, New York, 1973 (first printing, as stated on the copyright page), featuring various essays, the script, analysis and original reviews of the American World War II romantic drama film Casablanca (1942), signed by Bergman in bold blue ink to the half-title page, 'To Audrey - Ingrid Bergman and Ilsa Lund'. Bound in the publisher's black cloth, with gilt stamped title to spine, and accompanied by the dust jacket (some very minor, light age wear and the spine a little faded). An extremely rare (quite possibly unique) form of Bergman's signature in which she incorporates the character name of Ilsa Lund, described as her 'most famous and enduring role'. About EXProvenance: The present signed book originates from the collection of Audrey Gilchrist, a well-known in person collector of movie star autographs, based in London.

° ° Dickens, Charles - A Christmas Carol, in Prose, Being a Ghost Story of Christmas, 1st edition, 1st issue, Chapman & Hall, 1843 half-title printed in blue, title-page printed in red and blue, verso printed in blue, 2-page publisher's advertisement at end, hand-coloured etched frontispiece and 3 plates by John Leech, 4 wood-engravings in the text by W.J. Linton after Leech, light green endpapers, all edges gilt, original reddish-brown fine-ribbed cloth with decorative blind border surrounding central gilt cartouche and lettering on upper cover, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, 8vo (163 x 102mm), Eckel, p. 110; Smith II:4. First edition, first issue with 'Stave I' as the first chapter heading and no text changes. The binding conforms to William B. Todd's first impression, first issue with the closest interval between blind-stamping left margin and left extremity of wreath 14-15mm, and 'D' of 'Dickens' within wreath on front cover in perfect condition. (The Book Collector, Winter 1961, pp. 449-454.) A Christmas Carol was published on 19 December 1843, selling 6,000 copies in the few days before Christmas. Despite its enormous success it was a financial disaster for Dickens. It was a separate commission requested by him of his publishers Chapman and Hall, with Dickens insisting on a fine coloured binding and endpapers with gilt lettering.
