NO RESERVE Russian Avant-Garde.- Aseev (Nikolai Nikolaievich) Zor [Vision], first edition, [one of 200 copies], hand-printed, lithographed text throughout by Mariya Sinyakova, some age-toning and light creasing, original lithographed wrappers also by Sinyakova, hinges with old reinforcements, some browning and a few minor marks, slightly chipped at edges, preserved loose in later cloth-backed patterned board sleeve, [MoMA 87], Moscow, Knigoizdatel'stvo Liren' (printed in Kharkov), 1914; Stal'noi solovei [Steel Nightingale], first edition, MAF Seriia poetov no.2, light, even browning throughout, hinges reinforced, original wrappers printed with MAF logo, preserved loose in printed card sleeve, Moscow, Izd. VKhUTEMAS, 1922, 8vo (2)⁂ The first is one of Aseev's zaum (transrational) poems, lithographically replicating text apparently handwritten by Aseev and reminiscent of the handwritten mimeographed cubo-futurist pamphlets of Kruchenykh, utilising unusually positioned letter.
NO RESERVE Russian Avant-Garde.- Bal'mont (Konstantin) Boris Pasternak and others. My [We], first edition, browning, original printed wrappers with pictorial Futurist design, contemporary ownership inscription on upper cover, preserved in modern cloth sleeve, Moscow, Knigoizdatel'stvo pri Vserossiiskom Soiuze Poetov "Chikhi-Pikhi", 1920 § Bal'mont (Konstantin Dmitrievich) - Pod Severnym Nebom [Under the Northern Sky], St Petersburg, 1894; bound after V' Bezbrezhnosti [In Boundless Space], browning to title and some other minor marking, tape reinforcement to gutter at title, Moscow, 1895, together ?as issued in original pictorial boads, worn at edges, rebacked in later cloth with later label and brown tape reinforcements near head of spine, [Kilgour 58 & 59]; Liturgiya Krasoty [Liturgy of Beauty], first edition, modern half morocco, [Kilgour 65], Moscow, 1905; and 4 others by the same, 8vo (7)
NO RESERVE Russian Avant-Garde.- Blok (Aleksandr Aleksandrovich) Dvenadtsat [The Twelve], third edition, illustrations after Iurii Annenkov including 14 full-page, 2pp. advertisements, original printed wrappers, bound in modern half cloth, [MoMA 171], Petersburg, "Alkonost", 1918; Solovinyi sad [Garden of Nightingales], original wrappers with title within decorative border, [not in Kilgour], Petersburg, 1918; Zemlya v snegu. Tretyi sbornuk stikhov [Land in the Snow. NO RESERVE Russian Avant-Garde.- [Bugaev (Boris Nikolaevich)], "Andrei Bely". and others. Yav' [Reality], first edition, some contributions with facsimile signature of authors at end, neat contemporary ownership inscription on title, hinges reinforced, original lithographed covers with design by Aristarkh Lentulov, minor loss to spine ends, corners worn, [Moscow], 1919 § [Bugaev (Boris Nikolaevich)], "Andrei Bely". Zoloto v Lazuri [Gold on Azure], first edition, printed in red & black, 4pp. advertisements, browning, discolouration to head of half-title, bound in later buckram-backed marbled boards, [Kilgour 175], Moscow, 1904; Khristos voskres [Christ is risen], first edition , device on preliminary p., 5pp. advertisements, original wrappers printed in black & red designed by P. NO RESERVE Russian Avant-Garde.- Burliuk (David & Vladimir) and others. Poshchechina Obshchestvennomu Vkusu [A Slap in the Face of Public Taste], first edition, one of 600 copies, light age-toning, some marking to early ff., original burlap wrappers, small stamp on lower wrappers, small related inscription to upper wrapper, [MoMA 12], small 4to, Moscow, G.L. Kuz'min, 1912. ⁂ One of the most famous and iconoclastic early Russian Futurist publications , not least as a key early work by the Hylaea group. The title derives from the manifesto undersigned by the Burliuk brothers, Aleksei Kruchenykh, Velimir Khlebnikov and Vladimir Mayakovskii, which directly struck out at the more established Russian writers such as Blok, Dostoevsky, Gor'kii, Pushkin and Tolstoy. The work also features four prose-studies by Kandinskii, included without his consent, and the artist later distanced himself from the movement's more extreme sentiments
NO RESERVE Russian Avant-Garde.- Burliuk (David & Vladimir) and others. Sadok sudei II [A Trap for Judges II], first edition, one of 800 copies, on green paper, 15 letterpress illustrations (6 by Elena Guro; 3 by David Burliuk; 2 by Natalia Goncharova; 2 by Mikhail Larionov; 2 by Vladimir Burliuk), wallpaper wrappers with mounted printed title, rebacked in plain paper, preserved in later patterned drop-back box, [MoMA 53], small 4to, St Petersburg, Zhuravl, 1913.⁂ An important example of early Russian avant-garde collaborative effort. The work includes a Futurist manifesto, New Principles of Creation , demanding a new language called zaum (see lot 319) that adopts a typically Futurist take on the usage of grammar, syntax, punctuation & rhythm, and is accompanied by similarly wilful, unconventional illustrations by several of the preeminent Russian Futurist artists.
NO RESERVE Russian Avant-Garde.- Burliuk (David & Vladimir) Vladimir Mayakovsky and Velimir Khlebnikov . Trebnik troikh: sbornik stikhov [Missal of the three: a collection of poems and drawings], first edition, one of 1,100 copies, 13 illustrations after the Burliuk brothers, Mayakovsky and Tatlin, small mark to lower fore-corner of title, original wrappers with printed label on upper cover, small stamp on lower cover, overall a fine example, [MoMA 54], small 4to, Moscow, G.L. Kuzmin and S.D. Dolinsky, 1913.⁂ Trebnik troikh is an important Futurist work, primarily as the first anthology to contain exclusively poetry, but also due to the fascinating styles brought to bear by the likes of Khlebnikov, whose often linguistically challenging pieces are unclear whether fragment or whole, and Mayakovksy and his use, here for the first time, of the compound rhyme that would become his signature style, with its urban imagery and Cubist influences.
NO RESERVE Russian Avant-Garde.- Kamenskii (Vasilii Vasil'evich) Zvuchal Vesneianki. Stikhi [Sound Song of the Pipe of Spring. Poems], first edition, browning, advertisement on inside rear cover, ink name on title, hinges reinforced, some adhesive damage to gutter of title, original pictorial wrappers printed in colours, rebacked in later plain paper with some repairs to edges, stain to foot of upper cover, [MoMA 205], large 8vo, Moscow, 1918.⁂ The first edition of this anthology of one of the founders of Futurism's earlier works, including the first publication in full of Stenka Razin .
NO RESERVE Russian Avant-Garde.- Livshits (Benedikt Konstantinovich) Volche solntse, [The Wolfish Sun], 2 parts in one (second part Burliuk's Chetyre Zhenshchiny [Four Women]), colour plate, plain plate by Alexandra Exter, 4 plates by David Burliuk printed in blue, 6pp. advertisements, original printed wrappers, some subtle repairs & reinforcements, [cf. MoMA 67], "Gilea", 1914 § Esenin (Sergei Aleksandrovich) Preobrazhenie [Transformation], second, revised edition, browning, ink stamp to title, original printed green wrappers, marked and rubbed, bound in later cloth, [cf. MoMA for later editions], Imazhinisty, 1921 § Brik (Osip Maksimovich) Ne Poputchitsa [Not a Fellow Traveller], first edition, original pictorial wrappers designed by Anton Lavinskii, from a preliminary design by Mayakovsky, slight browning and minor marking to lower cover, [MoMA 472], Gosudarstvennoe izd-vo, 1923, Moscow; and 23 others, similar (26)⁂The first perhaps one of 480 copies.
NO RESERVE Russian Avant-Garde.- Mayakovsky (Vladimir Vladimirovich) Fleita pozvonochnik. [The Backbone Flute.], first edition, one of 600 copies, neat inscription to head of title, original white wrappers lettered in black, spine and extremities neatly and sympathetically repaired and restored, browning, [MoMA 132-33], 8vo, Petrograd: "Vzyal," 1916.⁂ The first edition of a major early work by Mayakovsky. A very good copy of this blasphemous, sexually-charged (and heavily censored) poem dedicated to Lilia Brik, the object of Mayakovsky's all-consuming passion. It is this poem that convinced Maxim Gorky of Mayakovsky's genius, and to champion him as Russia's greatest poet when most critics characterised him as a talentless charlatan.
NO RESERVE Russian Avant-Garde.- Mayakovsky (Vladimir Vladimirovich) Prostoe kak mychanie. [As Simple as Mooing], first edition, several pp. with censored words filled in by hand, original printed wrappers, laid down, neat and sympathetic repairs and restorations to spine and extremities, light browning, [MoMA 134], 8vo St Petersburg, Parus, 1916.⁂ The first edition of Mayakovsky's first major collection of verse, which includes one of his best-known works: 'Oblako v shtanakh', a poem that defined the course of Mayakovsky's future career
NO RESERVE Russian Avant-Garde.- Mayakovsky (Vladimir Vladimirovich) 150,000,000, first edition, one of 5000 copies, original tan wrappers, rebacked, some creasing and minor tears to extremities, preserved in folding chemise and slip-case, Moscow, GIZ, 1921; and 2 others including a later edition of the first, 8vo (3)⁂ 150,000,000 describes the struggle between millions of noble Soviet workers and the wicked Capitalists led by President Woodrow Wilson. It was published anonymously after Mayakovsky decided to dedicate his poetry to the Masses rather than to the glorification of the self. "150,000,000 speak with my lips," begins the poem; "No one is the author of my poem." But no one could mistake his voice throughout the work. Boris Pasternak did not care for it, and Lenin dismissed the epic agitprop poem as "stupid, monstrously stupid, and pretentious" and tried to suppress it. It is now considered one of Mayakovsky's important works.
NO RESERVE Russian Avant-Garde.- Mayakovsky (Vladimir Vladimirovich) Maiakovskii ulybaetsia. Maiakovskii smeetsia. Maiakovskii izdevaetsia. [Mayakovsky Smiles, Laughs, Scoffs.], first edition, light browning to margins, riginal wrappers printed in green, red and white, after a design by Rodchenko, rebacked retaining fragments of spine, 8vo, Moscow and St Petersburg, Krug, 1923.⁂ This fine collection of satirical poems, dedicated to Lily Brik, take the theme of revolution to consider the foibles of daily life.
NO RESERVE Russian Avant-Garde.- Mayakovsky (Vladimir Vladimirovich) Mayakovskaya gallereya. Te kogo ia nikogda ne videl. [The Mayakovsky Gallery: Those I Have Never Seen], first edition, illustrations by Mayakovsky, original pictorial wrappers in red and black (deatched), 8vo, Moscow: "Krasnaya Nov," 1923.
NO RESERVE Russian Avant-Garde.- Remizov (Aleksei) Kukkha Rozanovy pis'ma [Kuk-kha: Rozanov's Letters], first edition, device on preliminary blank, original patterned boards, slightly worn at spine, Berlin, 1923; Shumy Goroda [City Noises], first edition, inscribed by the author on title, 1p. advertisements, browning throughout, bound in later cloth, [not in Kilgour or MoMA], Reval [Estonia], 1921; and another by the same, 8vo (3)
NO RESERVE Russian Avant-Garde.- Tsvetaeva (Marina Ivanovna) Razluka [Separation], first edition, device on preliminary blank, original pink boards with printed label to design by A.Arnshtam, slightly torn at spine with some minor sunning but overall a very good copy, [Kilgour 290], 1922; Tsar'-devitsa. Poema - Skazka [Tsar-Maiden. Poem - Fairy Tale], first edition , woodcut device to preliminary blank, title printed in red & black, half-title printed in red, decorations and rubricated initials by L.E. Chirikova, occasional foxing, with loosely inserted typescript copy of Pasternak's poem In Memory of Maria Tsvetaeva in Russian, original pictorial wrappers by Chirikova, some marking, rebacked in plain paper, [Kilgour 291], Petersburg & Berlin, 1922; Versty [Mileposts] ...vypusk I [issue I], some age-toning, original printed wrappers, a couple of small superficial splits at spine but overall a fine copy, Russian bookseller's small stamp on inside front cover, Moscow , 1922, 8vo (3)⁂ Considered one of the great innovators of Russian poetry, Marina Tsvetaeva was at least in part the model for Lara in Pasternak's Doctor Zhivago , the author writing of her to Rilke she was "a born poet, a great talent ... who writes in a way that none of us in the USSR now writes."
NO RESERVE Russian Avant-Garde.- [Vogau (Boris Andreevich)], "Boris Pil'niak". - Povesti Peterburgskaya [A Petersburg Tale], decorative Futurist title, illustrations and decorations by Vasily Masiutin, some age-toning, original wrappers with decorative title on upper cover, a very good copy, [MoMA 414], Moscow; Golyy God [Naked Year], device on preliminary blank, browning, title with elaborate frame border, preserved in modern board-backed sleeve and slip-case, Berlin [&c.], both first edition, 1922, 12mo & 8vo (2)⁂The first a seemingly scarce work by the author whose attempt to implicate Stalin in the death of a Revolutionary leader resulted in his eventual incarceration in 1937 and his assassination less than a year later. Masiutin was a prolific graphic artist as well as a master engraver; he emigrated in the 1920s to Germany where he continued to contribute to Russian AmigrA publications.
NO RESERVE Ackroyd (Peter) Hawksmoor, browning to text margins, 1985; Chatterton, signed by the author, browning to text margins, 1987 § Hornby (Nick) About a Boy, 1998 § Barnes (Julian) A History of the World in 10 1/2 Chapters, 1989, first edition, original boards, dust-jackets, fine copies; and 12 others, modern first editions, 8vo (16)
Christopher Richard Wynne Nevinson, ARA (British, 1889-1946) Romney Marsh signed in pencil lower right "C R W Nevinson"; 1918, from the edition of 25 etching on wove, with margins, unframed 38 x 56cm (15 x 22in) Literature: Guichard 25; Black 101 Other Notes: The present etching was first exhibited in 1923 at the Leicester Galleries alongside other works on a pastoral theme. The critics of the time were surprised by Nevinson's first attempts at pure landscape etchings, exemplified by this work. Seeing this etching prompted the leading critic of the 1920s, Paul Konody, to remark that such works would come as a surprise to those who assumed Nevinson was incapable of "appreciating the charm of rural life." Michael Campbell has dated this etching to 1918. Unframed. Edges a little torn and browned and there are two areas of Sellotape along the top edge. Michael Campbell dates this to 1918 from Guichard's notes. ( Guichard bought Nevinson's archive from Strang's son).
