In his Geological Essay of 1815 he argues that geology, as a science of observation, cannot claim certainty for its conclusions, and is therefore fallible in relation to the evidence of the Bible. Kidd's point of view coincides in large measure with that of Cuvier, whose recent Theory of the Earth had been translated into English in 1813. (1)

The central argument in Principles, and one that had a notable influence on the young Charles Darwin, was that 'the present is the key to the past' and that geological remains from a distant past can be explained by reference to observable geological processes now in operation. Robert Waring Darwin (1766-1848) was a medical doctor and the father of Charles Darwin. "Robert provided the first empirical evidence that small eye movements are made even when people attempt to keep them fixed. This he found during his studies of the afterimages of colored stimuli in which he noticed that while a person tried to fixate a colored circle, a lucid edge appeared on the adjacent white-paper background. He concluded "as by the unsteadiness of the eye a part of the fatigued retina falls on the white paper."" (Burntwood Family History Group). (1)
