Crown 8vo; original khaki pictorial cloth; pp. xii + 231; plates; plan; folding map showing `Pretoria to Komati Poort Railway` and `Pretoria to Witbank`. Re-cased, with new front endpaper; cloth rather worn and corners turned; tail of spine stiffened somewhat through re-casing; spine a bit cocked; lower hinge a little tender; trace of damp-stain to edges of a few leaves; occasional fox spot; earlier owner`s hand-stamp to first page of the account. (Hackett, p. 150) `The prisoners were taken to the Staats Model School at Pretoria, and Churchill, Brockie, and Haldane made many plans to escape, which were doomed to failure, but eventually Churchill got away on December 12th; the others were observed by a sentry, and dared not make the attempt, but later on they managed to hide themselves under the floorings of the prison, and being joined by Le Mesurier, they disappeared on February 26, 1900, to the consternation and mystification of their guards, who never supposed they were hiding in the building. They were supplied with necessities from time to time by their fellow officers who were in the secret, but found no means to escape till March 16th, when all the prisoners were removed and the building deserted, when finding the coast clear, they succeeded in getting outside, eluded the few passers by, and were soon on the veld. The officers were hidden by some friends amongst bales of wool, which were put on a truck attached to a passenger train bound for Delagoa Bay, which took them safely across the border.` - Mendelssohn I, pp. 669,670. Villebois-Mareuil, [Count George de] War Notes. The Diary of Colonel de Villebois-Mareuil, from November 24, 1899, to April 4, 1900 Authorised translation from the Paris Liberté by Frederic Lees. With a preface by E. M. de Vogüé, member of the Académie Française. Second Edition. Crown 8vo; original red cloth, lettered in black to spine and upper cover, with pictorial onlay to upper cover; pp. [iii-xx] + 352. Corners turned; backstrip fragile and sunned, splitting along lower joint; cover rubbed and partially discoloured; front free endpaper and earliest prelims. removed; archival tape reinforcing to hinges; earlier owner`s name signed on title page; edges a little browned; occasional spotting. (Hackett, pp. 83, 194; Mendelssohn II, p. 569) `Translation from the diary of a French officer serving in the Boer army. The entries relate to events in Natal, the siege of Kimberley and the campaign in the Orange Free State. The author was killed in action near Boshof in April 1900.` - R. G. Hackett: South African War Books - An Illustrated bibliography, p. 83. `Villebois seems to have been thoroughly disillusioned before he lost his life at Boshof; a brave and skillful soldier, he appears to have been disgusted with the procrastination of the Boers, and their want of decision, resolution, and union. He thought well of the abilities of De La Rey, but considered that Joubert was a mere politician. He seems to have had a great contempt for the British army and officers before the arrival of Lords Roberts and Kitchener, but speaks of the presumption of the Republicans in thinking that they would defeat these generals as easily as they did some of the previous leaders. He criticises Buller`s operations, but continually draws attention to the very marked `carefulness` of the burghers, of whom he says, `The Boer`s first concern is for his safety.` ` - Mendelssohn. First Afrikaans edition. 8vo; original pale green cloth, lettered in black on spine and upper cover; pp. xxxiv + 429; plates. Slightly frayed at corners and spine ends; cloth lightly soiled; edges browned; occasional fox spot. Good condition. Afrikaans text.

Although unfinished, the Summa is `one of the classics of the history of philosophy and one of the most influential works of Western literature.` It is intended as an instructional guide for moderate theologians, and a compendium of all of the main theological teachings of the Catholic Church. It presents the reasoning for almost all points of Christian theology in the West. The Summa`s topics follow a cycle: the existence of God; Creation, Man; Man`s purpose; Christ; the Sacraments; and back to God. Picasso, Pablo (illustrations and lettering), Louis Miguel Dominguin (introduction) and George Boudaille (essay) Picasso Toros y Toreros (Bulls and Bullfighting) (text in Spanish and French) With a few later items, this book was compiled from three of the artist`s sketchbooks (13 June to 1 July 1957; and 5-12 and 12-15 July 1959). Apart from the introduction and the essay, the story of bullfighting is told through Picasso`s eyes. The slipcase has the artist`s spine lettering and two-colour sketches front and back. The case is covered with unprinted green buckram top and bottom and two-colour printed cream cloth on the faces. The book`s covers are white buckram boards with Picasso`s lettering and sketches in colour. The endpapers reproduce the designs and lettering of the notebook covers, while the back paste-down features an 1873 poster for the Malaga Plaza de Toros. Some 90 heavy white cartridge leaves (i e 180 sides) are bound as mainly unpaginated printed pages or as additional endpapers. The first 32 pp comprise the introduction (in Spanish with a French translation) and the essay (in French), both illustrated with Picassos pen-and-ink sketches. The rest of the book reproduces the artist`s sketches and lettering, variously in black, black and a second colour and up to eight flat colours - sometimes on both sides of the sheet and sometimes on one side only. (Although the book was published later in London and New York, the Paris edition, from which this copy comes, was the original.) The high quality of the production, under the direction of Charles Field, was achieved through suppliers who contributed the reproduction of the illustrations, the typography, the printing (two printers, one for the photogravure sections and one for the lithography sections), and the binding. Although this copy is 52 years old, the immediacy of the artist`s work is such that one almost believes that one is looking at original Picasso sketches. Frazer, Sir James George (arranged and edited by Robert Angus Downie) The Native Races of Africa and Madagascar Frazer was 36 when he wrote `The Golden Bough` (variously referred to as `A Study in Comparative Religion` or `A Study in Magic and Religion`), which was said have influenced the work of writers as different as Jung, the Swiss philosopher; T S Eliot, the English/American poet; and James Joyce, the Irish writer. However, it was not until 47 years later, when he was 83, that Frazer decided to publish selections from his forty or so thick quarto notebooks on the anthropological writings of others. A year later, in 1938, `The Native Races of Africa and Madagascar` was published as the first of the series - `Anthologia Anthropologica`. The result was `A Copious Selection of Passages for the Study of Social Anthropology from the Manuscript Notebooks of [J G Frazer] Arranged and Edited from the MSS by Robert Angus Downie`. In his own introduction, Downie describes how he went about his work (see also one of the images), sorting, arranging and copying the extracts according to continent (Africa first), and then region and race. Frazer lived to see the full series published - after Africa, Australia, followed by Asia and Europe, and, finally, America, with the last three all published 1939 - all under Downie`s editorship and in a uniform edition from the same publisher. [A reasonable set of the four first edition volumes is quoted on the internet at about $750.] The current book reproduces 234 extracts, some very long and some much shorter, and mainly, but not only, in English. The book is substantial: xiv + 571 pp of double-column text and index + frontispiece + one of Frazer`s manuscript pages in facsimile + seven maps showing the languages, races and tribes of Africa and Madagascar. The book is also comprehensive: it deals with Bushmen, Hottentots and a dozen other races in Southern Africa, and almost another one hundred races in the rest of the continent. Full references to the sources of the extracts are given at the end of each entry. The dustjacket of our copy (few of the available copies have dustjackets, in any condition) has been repaired and is now Good. The original turquoise cloth-boards, gilt to the spine, are marred only by two small nicks at the head of the spine and an early sign of shelf-wear at the foot of the spine. The plain endpapers are Fine: there is a small green sticker of a Pretoria bookseller on the front paste-down and an owner`s signature and date on the front free endpaper.(*) The text and illustrations are all present, unmarked and unfoxed or otherwise discoloured. The page edges are uniformly sunned. In other words, the overall description `Very Good` is conservative. (*)The first owner, and the only one with his name in the book, was `D Ziervogel, UP, 28-8-1940`. Ziervogel bought the book when he was an M A student at the University of Pretoria. He went on to become one of South Africa`s leading writers on anthropology.   Condition: Very Good Publisher Place: London Publisher: Percy Lund Humphries Publication Date: 1938 Size: 375 x 220 x 60; weight 1.7 kg Reserve: $75 Click here to view further details and to bid

CARRINGTON (Noel), editor PUFFIN PICTURE BOOKS Group of 9 titles, all fine copies in colored pictorial wrappers unless otherwise noted. A series of brightly colored lithographed books inspired by those created for Soviet children during the 1920s and 1930s. They uniformly measure 180 x 224 mm and were initially intended to distract British children from the war, as the series began in 1940. A new low-cost but evocative printing technique called auto-lithography was employed, which involved the artist drawing or tracing with a brush and pen directly onto a zinc plate. Colored illustrations alternated back-to-back with black and white illustrations to maintain lower costs. The series proved a great success. Finding these examples in such fine condition from the earliest decade of Puffin makes this a rare opportunity to add examples to any collection of juvenile picture-books and toy books regardless of nationality. #12. NAMA- A.B.Z. Kannis, Gei *Hu- *Ze Khom-Ei-Kannis. [By the Rev. H C Knudsen]. Rare SOUTH AFRICAN Primer 1845 FIRST (and only) edition, comprising the very first language primer for the Nama language (spoken in Namibia) as well as one of the earliest sub-Saharan African primers. The sub-title apparently translates as `Shouting Together and Reading Book`. Its author Hans Christian Knudsen (1816-1863), was a Norwegian missionary of the Rhenish (German Lutheran) Missionary Society . `This spelling and reading book includes vocabularies with an English translation, and part of a catechism; viz., the Ten Commandments, part of St. Augustine`s creed, the Lord`s Prayer, &c.`--cf. Grey, Sir G. The library of His Excellency Sir George Grey (London, 1858-62. v. 1, p. 13-14). OCLC records only 5 additional copies of this title: NYPL, University of Natal Library, Universiteit Leiden, Univ of Cape Town Library, and another in South Africa. Provenance: with the book label of antiquarian specialist John Lawson (Oxford, UK). According to Wikipedia, `The Khoekhoe language /ˈkɔɪkɔɪ/, Khoekhoegowab, also known by the ethnic term Nama /ˈnɑːmə/[1] and formerly as Hottentot, is the most widespread of those languages of southern Africa that contain many `click` sounds and have therefore been loosely classified as Khoisan languages. It belongs to the Khoe language family, and is spoken in Namibia, Botswana, and South Africa by three ethnic groups, the Nama, Damara, and Haiǁom. It appears that the Damara picked up the language from the Nama in Botswana, and that they migrated to Namibia separately from the Nama. The Haiǁom, who had spoken a Juu language, later shifted to Khoekhoe. The name for Nama speakers, Khoekhoen, is from the Nama word khoe `person`,with reduplication and the suffix -n to indicate the plural.Georg Friedrich Wreede was the first European to study the language, after arriving in Cape Town in 1659. Khoekhoe is a national language in Namibia. In Namibia and South Africa, radio programs are broadcast in it. In Namibia, it is used for teaching up to the university level as well as in the administration.` Condition: first and last page browned, otherwise a fine copy. Civil War. Casler, John Overton: Four Years in the Stonewall Brigade. Guthrie, OK, State Capital Printing Company, 1893. Small octavo, illustrated blue cloth cover, floral endpapers, 495pp. First Edition. As much a rogue as a rebel, and far from a model soldier, Private Casler pens the verité of camp life and combat and the harsh existence in Stonewall's ranks. His frank confessions of his service in the Army of Northern Virginia and his unapologetic recollections are among the most sought after and cited accounts of a Confederate soldier. Rare first edition in excellent shape, Fine.

Civil War. Fremantle, Sir Arthur James Lyon: Three Months in the Southern States April, June 1863. Mobile, Alabama; S.H. Goetzel, 1864. Small octavo, later ¾ leather with brown cloth board and blue endpapers, 158pp. A Lieutenant-Colonel in the Coldstream Guards, and the most prominent foreign observer of the Confederacy and notable observer at the Battle of Gettysburg, Fremantle sheds considerable light not only on the military and political life of the CSA, but also on the minutiae of everyday life in the Civil War South. While stationed in Gibraltar, Fremantle met the captain of the Confederate commerce raider CSS Sumter and was inspired by tales of blockade running and combat on the high seas. Having a great interest in the American civil war, Fremantle took a leave of absence to tour the South. The diary of his sojourn was quite frank as he never intended to publish it, but upon his return to England, there was so much interest that Fremantle was compelled to put it in print. Contemporary name penned on first page of narrative with date "Aug. 22/64". Light foxing and ink shadowing front and back page. Very Good, Rare Mobile edition.

[American Revolution]. Clinton, Sir Henry: The Narrative of Lieutenant-General Sir Henry Clinton, K.B., Relative to His Conduct During Part of His Command of the King's Troops in North America; Particularly to that which respects the unfortunate Issue of the Campaign in 1781. With: Cornwallis, Earl: An Answer to that Part of the Narrative of …Clinton; With: Clinton, Sir Henry: Observations on Some Parts of the Answer. London, printed for J. Debrett, 1783. Octavo, contemporary full tan calf, red morocco spine. Clear guard over covers bound down on inside board. Rear joint starting, trivial pencil notations endpapers, otherwise the contemporary binding is in excellent condition, and the contents clean and bright. Very Good. Sir Henry Clinton arrived in Boston in 1775 along with Major Generals William Howe and John Burgoyne to strengthen General Gage's position. In 1778, Clinton succeeded to the supreme command of British forces in North America after General Howe's resignation. After the fall of Charleston, which Clinton had under siege, he returned to New York leaving his second-in-command Lord Cornwallis in charge of the subsequent operations that led to the capitulation in Yorktown and the peace treaty which recognized American independence. Clinton returned to England in 1782 to find himself blamed for the defeat at Yorktown and Cornwallis conversely viewed with sympathy. With this "Narrative," Clinton defends his actions in the war and lays the blame at Cornwallis' feet. An indignant Cornwallis, in turn, defends himself with an Answer to the Narrative, which is then rebutted and replied to by Clinton in Observations on Some Parts of the Answer - both included here.
