Regicides.- History of the King-Killers (The), 12 monthly parts in 2 vol., second edition vol.1, first edition vol.2, ?lacking engraved frontispiece, each part with separate title, browned, vol.1 with final blank, L2 in Part III and L3 in part V both torn and repaired (the latter rather crudely), modern calf, red morocco labels, 8vo, S.Redmayne, 1719-20.⁂ The title of the first continues: "Or, the 30th of January Commemorated: containing the Lives of Thirty One Fanatick Saints, famous for Treason, Rebellion, &c. Being one for every Day in the Month". The second title continues: "Or, the Fanatick Martyrology...".

Slavery.- [?Haywood (Eliza)] Memoirs of an Unfortunate Young Nobleman, return'd from a Thirteen Years Slavery in America..., first edition, half-title, issue with "and sold" at end of second line of imprint on title and p.1 with woodcut head-piece of cherub and catchword "Words" at foot, 7pp.advertisements at end, some leaves becoming loose, contemporary calf with double gilt fillet border, spine ruled in gilt with green roan label, a little rubbed and marked, joints cracked, 8vo, for J.Freeman, 1743.⁂ Novel based on the life of, and sometimes attributed to, James Annesley who claimed that his uncle, the Earl of Anglesey, had sold him into slavery in an attempt to secure the title for himself. He eventually returned to London and took his uncle to court, successfully retrieving his estates but not his titles before he died in 1744. The story inspired many writers, notably Smollett in Peregrine Pickle, Scott in Guy Mannering, and R.L.Stevenson in Kidnapped.The work takes place partly on plantations in Delaware; sequels were published in two volumes in 1743 and 1747.

Library Hub adds another 4 copies in the UK but not in the British Library.

He published a number of works on late Hellenism of which The Byzantine Achievement of 1920 is the most satisfying, but this group of items shows his additional interest in the modern state of Greece.Dr Skevos Zervos (1875-66) was a surgeon, a traditional free naked sponge-diver, and benefactor to Greece. The first work concerns events leading up to the transfer of sovereignty of the Dodecanese from Turkey to Italy at the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923. In 1919 Skevos had attended the Paris Peace Conference with the Greek politician Eleftherios Venizelos in an attempt to regain the Dodecanese and he was present when the United Nations officially returned the region to Greece in 1948. The third item records press reports on the Greek White Book, Venizelos's speech of August 26th 1917, and the evacuation of Roupel. The last is an account of a Naval Intelligence Officer's time in Crete with the RNVR in World War I.

Balfour was a eminent sinologist, living in Shanghai during the Victorian Era. Editor of the North China Daily News, he was also a respected international correspondent. Chapters cover topics such as, Chinese Jews, Buddhism, Chinese Theory on Creation, opium, Japanese Influence on China, secret societies and their political significance.

Reformation.- Verstegan (Richard) Theatre des Cruautez des Heretiques de nostre temps, first French edition, 2 parts in 1, engraved pictorial title and 27 etched illustrations only (of 29, lacking K2 and K3), in first part F4 and G1 with marginal defects and F4 minor loss of text, in second part E2 and E3 horizontal whole page tears with paper restoration, some light browning, staining and finger soiling, later calf-backed boards, spine slightly chipped, [Adams T443], 4to, Antwerp, Adrien Hubert, 1588.⁂ A Catholic convert and Anglo-Dutch by descent in exile from the Reformation in Paris, Rome and Antwerp, Verstegan (or Rowlands as he is also known) was perhaps particularly well suited to feeling the upheavals and trauma caused by the Reformation in so many countries. Having already written on the suffering of priest back in England, this particular work, with its etching of torture scenes, was aimed at documenting the atrocities committed by certain different Protestant groups: 'the cruelties of the schismatics in England'; 'the horrible cruelties of the Huguenots in France'; 'the barbarous cruelties of the wretches in the Low Countries' and 'persecutions of the Catholics by the Machiavellist Protestants in England and Ireland'. The final etching in this martyrology is the execution of Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots, this shocking regicide then only a year past.

Sir Henry Blount's copy.- Bartoli (Daniello) La ricreatione del savio in discorso con la natura e con Dio libri due, first edition, Sir Henry Blount's copy, half-title, engraved plate, a8 imprimatur, occasional spotting and light staining, lightly browned, loose in contemporary limp vellum, titled in ink on spine, soiled, 8vo, Rome, Ignatio de' Lazzeri, 1659.⁂ Sir Henry Blount's copy of a rare work, with his signature and ?price paid for the volume to foot of title and two marginal ink notes (p.399 in Italian and p.413 in Latin, along with some underlining). Blount (1602-1682) was an English landowner, extensive traveler in Europe and the Levant and author, best known for his A Voyage into the Levant , 1636.
