Shakespeare vs. Bacon.- [Lawrence (Herbert)] The Life and Adventures of Common Sense: An Historical Allegory, first edition, author's name supplied in manuscript on title, contemporary sprinkled calf, rubbed, rebacked, 8vo, for Montagu Lawrence, 1769.⁂ Scarce novel by a surgeon and friend of David Garrick. Pp.145-149 include an early appearance of Shakespeare in fiction and possibly the first printed assertion that Shakespeare's plays were written by Bacon. Although the work is complete in itself, and "Finis" appears at the end, a second volume covering George II and the early years of George III was published about a year later. ESTC lists 4 copies only (BL, Glasgow, National Library of Scotland, Bodleian).

Burne-Jones (Edward).- [MacLaren (Archibald)] The Fairy Family, first edition, engraved frontispiece, additional pictorial title and wood-engraved tail-piece by Edward Burne-Jones, tissue guard to title, 4pp. publishers' catalogue at end, no pp.81-96 as is correct, light spotting to title, small book-late of James Franck Bright, original purple cloth stamped in blind with small gilt wheels at corners (variant binding), a little rubbed, spine faded, 8vo, 1857.⁂ The first book illustrations by Edward Burne-Jones.
Cruikshank (George).- Angelo (Henry) Angelo's Pic Nic; or, Table Talk, first edition, hand-coloured etched frontispiece and title vignette by George Cruikshank, with 2 blank leaves bound in amongst preliminaries, title soiled and browned, bookplate of B.Williams Ball, contemporary half green calf, spine gilt with red roan label, slightly rubbed, [Cohn 31], 8vo, 1834.
Gardens.- Switzer (Stephen) An Introduction to a General System of Hydrostaticks and Hydraulicks, Philosophical and Practical..., 2 vol. in 1, first edition, engraved frontispiece and 61 plates, 41 folding or double-page, the latter mounted on stubs, plates 39 & 40 slightly shorter and possibly from another copy, frontispiece creased and soiled & frayed at upper edge, also tear to lower edge affecting caption (repaired), light browning to a few plates, G2 with tear to upper margin, modern ink inscription to front free endpaper, contemporary sprinkled calf, rubbed and stained, a few gouges, rebacked preserving old red morocco label, [Berlin Kat 3614; Bibliotheca Mechanica p.309], 4to, for T. Astley [& others], 1729.⁂ Including the origin of springs, steam-engines for raising water, and fountains. Switzer worked on the designs of the gardens at Castle Howard, Blenheim and Kensington Palace.
[James (Sir Henry, printer)] [Domesday Book or Great Survey of England of William the Conqueror], 2 vol. comprising Great Domesday & Little Domesday, first facsimile edition, printed in red and black, original reversed calf, red edges, 4to (Great Domesday slightly larger), [Southampton, Ordnance Survey], [1862].⁂ Rare complete facsimile of the Domesday Book reproduced using the new process of photozincography invented by Sir Henry James. The work was taken to Southampton where it was taken apart and photographed, with the results being offered as individual county sections with introductory notes. This copy is one of only a small number with all the sections (less the introductions) bound together in a replica binding of the book at the time.
England.- Grosley (Pierre Jean) A Tour to London; or, New Observations on England, and its Inhabitants, translated by Thomas Nugent, 2 vol., first English edition, advertisement leaf at end of vol.1, browned, some soiling, Z5 in vol.1 torn and repaired, ex-library copy with a few small ink stamps to title and preliminaries but none to text, modern half, 8vo, for Lockyer Davis, 1772. ⁂ A Frenchman's observations of England and the English having spent a year living in London. It reputedly includes the first mention of the sandwich in print: "A minister of state passed four and twenty hours at a public gaming-table, so absorpt in play, that, during the whole time, he had no subsistence but a bit of beef, between two slices of toasted bread, which he eat without ever quitting the game. This new dish grew highly in vogue, during my residence in London; it was called by the name of the minister, who invented it." vol.1 p.149.
Kent.- Kilburne (Richard) A Topographie or Survey of the County of Kent, first edition, engraved frontispiece portrait (trimmed to border and laid down), woodcut head-pieces and initials, numerous contemporary ink annotations, cropped but some leaves with margins folded in to preserve marginalia (some a little frayed at edges), that on N2 torn away just touching edge of text, title lightly soiled, old sprinkled calf with later blind-stamped border, rubbed, rebacked, [Wing K434], small 4to, by Thomas Mabb, for Henry Atkinson, 1659.
Agriculture.- Chomel (Noel) Dictionnaire Oeconomique...., edited by J.Marret, 4 vol. including 2 vol. Supplement bound in 2, third edition, titles in red and black, engraved dedication and 11 plates by B.Picart, 2 folding, one double-page, numerous engraved or woodcut illustrations in text, contemporary ink note at foot of titles, some browning, mostly light, small ink stain to upper edge of a few leaves first volume, contemporary mottled calf, spines gilt in compartments with red and black roan labels, rubbed, joints split, corners and spine ends worn and with some repairs, [Vicaire 172], folio, Amsterdam, Jean Covens & Corn. Germany.- Gerning (Johann Isaak von) A Picturesque Tour along the Rhine, from Mentz to Cologne, first English edition, list of subscribers, 24 hand-coloured aquatint plates after C.G.Schutz, folding engraved map with routes hand-coloured at end, frontispiece and title browned, some spotting or light offsetting to or from plates, later half red morocco, t.e.g., others uncut, a little rubbed, [Abbey, Travel, 217; Tooley 234], 4to, 1820.
