Milton (John). Paradise Lost. A Poem in Ten Books, London, Printed by S. Simmons, and are to be sold by T. Helder at the Angel in Little Brittain, 1669, title-page soiled and frayed, with some marginal repairs, and with its lower portion (with the author's name, and imprint) expertly supplied in facsimile on matching and aged paper, the following 3 leaves of preliminaries (A2-A4) from a different copy, larger in size than the rest, the rest of the text with occasional soiling, last leaf slightly frayed, with a few small and neat paper repairs here and there, the whole disbound, with the bulk of the volume (i.e. everything except the title-page and 3 larger leaves of prelims.) folded as signatures, and with visible evidence of having been formerly stitched and bound together, small 4to. Hugh Amory, in his article "Things Unattempted Yet" (The Book Collector, Vol. 32, 1983) details the myriad issue points and variations in the first edition of "Paradise Lost". With the obvious proviso that a relevant part of the title-page is in facsimile, the present copy conforms to Amory 3, a reissue of the first edition sheets, with added preliminaries, and a cancel title-page. Sigs. Z and Vv are in their original setting. On the title-page, "Angel" in the imprint is in Roman type, and "The Printer to the Reader" at the head of A2r is in the 6-line state. Interestingly accompanied by an ALS from Harry [?Pratley] to "Dear Tom" [?Thorp] "Have just come across the enclosed TP to Paradise Lost which belonged to the loose sheets you have., it may be worth while giving you instead of throwing it away, which I shall otherwise do".
