GESNER [or GESSNER], Conrad (1516-65). Vogelbuch, Zürich, 1557, 219 fine woodcut illustrations of birds, in an EXCEPTIONALLY FINE contemporary pigskin binding. FIRST GERMAN EDITION.GESNER [or GESSNER], Conrad (1516-65). Vogelbuch. Darin die art, natur und eigenschafft aller vöglen. Zürich: Christoffel Froschouer, 1557. Folio (384 x 245mm). EXCEPTIONALLY FINELY BOUND IN ELABORATE CONTEMPORARY BLIND-STAMPED PANELLED PIGSKIN, with small figures of the Apostles, and old, probably original, engraved clasps, the upper cover with the initials "VGGJEFZA" and the date "1561" stamped in black, the spine with 5 raised bands (some light staining and rubbing). Provenance: later pencil inscription on the front pastedown explaining the initials on the front cover: "V(on) G(ottes) G(naden) J(oachim) E(rnst) F([illegible word]) Z(u) A(nhalt)"; later illegible pencil signature on front free endpaper; Edwin Schindler 1950 (marginal stamp on title). THE FIRST GERMAN EDITION of the second volume (on birds) of Gesner's monumental work of natural history, often regarded as "the starting-point of modern zoology" (Anker). "Conrad Gesner was one of the great polymaths of the Renaissance ... His 'History of Animals' is an encyclopedia of contemporary knowledge, intended to replace not only medieval compilations but even Aristotle's work of the same title ... The work consists of five large volumes [of which the present volume is the second] ... The first four volumes deal with quadrupeds, birds and fishes; the posthumous fifth volume with snakes and, in an appendix, scorpions ... Although the Historia animalium does not yet show any recognition of a connexion between different forms of living nature and fails to conform to our modern ideas of biological research, it was a great step forward and remained the most authoritative zoological book between Aristotle and the publication of Ray's classification of fauna in 1693" (PMM). Anker p.10-11: "The volume dealing with birds ... was [first] published in 1555. It gives descriptions and pictures of a large number of birds (altogether 217 figures) material for which was drawn from many different sources ... But this volume also contains original observations made by the author or by his contemporary and fellow zoologists, from whom he procured information ... Gesner's encyclopedic work acquired such prestige and importance during the following period that it is often regarded as the starting-point of modern zoology. Its great reputation and wide circulation were largely due to the fact that it was decorated with so many pictures in the form of woodcuts that it marked a new departure in the field of zoological illustration"; Brunet II, 391-392 (citing the full work "Historia animalium" of 5 vols., but not mentioning this edition of the ornithological volume, or erroneously dating it to 1554): "Pendant près de deux siècles ce grand ouvrage a été le livre le meilleur et le plus complet que l'on eût sur la zoologie générale, et sous plus d'un rapport il mérite encore une place distinguée dans la bibliothèque du naturaliste curieux de suivre l'histoire des progès de la science"; Nissen IVB 350; PMM 77 (citing the full work "Historia animalium" of 5 vols.); Wood p.356.
[DEFOE, Daniel (c. 1660-1731)]. The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, London, 1722, contemporary calf. Sixth edition.[DEFOE, Daniel (c. 1660-1731)]. The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, of York, Mariner: Who lived eight year and twenty Years all alone in an un-inhabited Island on the Coast of America ... The Sixth Edition. London: Printed for W. Taylor, 1722. 8vo (190 x 115mm). Engraved frontispiece, title printed in red and black with woodcut illustration of a ship, headpieces and initials, 6 engraved plates, 4-pages of publisher's advertisements with woodcut illustration at the end ([?]lacking map, frontispiece repaired with very slight loss, some mainly marginal spotting and staining). Contemporary panelled calf (upper cover detached, rebacked and with some repairs at edges, rather worn). Provenance: "Sarah [?illegible name] her book 1730" (inscription on front free endpaper); later illegible faint pencil inscription above it. cf. Grolier English 41; Lowndes 613-614; Moore 412; Pirie Library 890 (citing the first Stockdale edition of 1790); PMM 180; Rothschild 775 (the references citing the first edition of 1719, except where indicated). The work is considered to be the first novel in the English language. The present volume is complete in itself although two lesser-known 'sequels' were published (neither present here), "The Farther Adventures of Robinson Crusoe", first published in 1719, and "Serious Reflections during the Life and Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe", first published in 1720. "After twenty years of enormously prolific pamphleteering, political and sectarian, sometimes in verso, Defoe suddenly disclosed a genius for devising a tale of adventure ... This influence is not yet dissipated, for much of science fiction is basically Crusoe's island changed to a planet. At least equally relevant to the present purpose is the figure of the lonely human being subduing the pitiless forces of nature; going back to nature, indeed, and portraying the 'noble savage' in a way that made the book required reading for Rousseau's Emile" (PMM).

WARREN, Suzanne [i.e. Suzanne Henriette Angèle WARENGHEM ([?]1921-99)] - Gordon YOUNG (b. 1905). In Trust and Treason. The Strange Story of Suzanne Warren, London, 1959, original cloth, dust-jacket. FIRST EDITION, HEAVILY ANNOTATED BY SUZANNE WARREN.WARREN, Suzanne [i.e. Suzanne Henriette Angèle WARENGHEM ([?]1911-99)] - Gordon YOUNG (b. 1905). In Trust and Treason. The Strange Story of Suzanne Warren. London: E. Hulton and Co., Ltd., 1959 [imprint and date on a printed label pasted onto the verso of title]. 8vo (217 x 140mm). Half title, half tone portrait frontispiece and illustrations. Original black buckram, spine lettered in silver (some damp-staining), variant dust-jacket printed in black, yellow and white with price of 18s. unclipped (a few tears without loss, some creasing at edges). Provenance: "Suzanne Charise ..." (signature, with Wimbledon address, on front free endpaper; "Charise" was Suzanne Warren's codename); various typed notes and relevant newspaper clippings loosely-inserted. FIRST EDITION, SUZANNE WARREN'S COPY, with her extensive ink proofing and annotation. A preliminary leaf is inscribed by Suzanne Warren, "This book is to be returned to me as soon as possible. The following corrections are marked clearly on the pages concerned: take out full pages 89, 90, 91 [etc] ... page 113: only change to make us sleep and be found in separate bedrooms - take out photo of me carring[sic] my baby (facing page 144). The above information is given only to help find pages where corrections are clearly marked"; with the corresponding amendments and deletions made in the body of the text itself. Most of the deleted passages relate to Suzanne Warren's relationship with and marriage to the infamous double-agent Paul Cole (a.k.a. Harry Cole, and with various other aliases) about which - perhaps unsurprisingly - she seems especially sensitive, to the point of wishing it to be expunged altogether from Young's narrative. "The heroic story of a Frenchwoman in the Resistance Movement includes one of the most extraordinary and personally tragic episodes of the war in France. Suzanne Warren (her anglicised name in British Intelligence records) threw herself into the work of helping the escape from France of British soldiers and airmen. In the course of this she met a dashing Englishman [Cole] who ran the escape route organisation in northern France. She fell in love with him and they were married in Nazi-occupied Paris. From then on the story, as unexpected and exciting as a novel, turns to a tragedy and a climax which ends in a gun battle in a Paris tenement ..." (from the turn-in).

As you know, I think that your book 'Mulberry' [i.e. a work on Mulberry harbours, temporary portable harbours developed by the British during World War II for use in the Allied invasion of Normandy in June 1944] has come out extremely well. Original pale green printed wrappers (backstrip torn with some loss and repaired with clear adhesive tape, a few small stains, some minor fraying). Provenance: illegible old signatures on upper wrapper; from the Collection of Peter and Margarethe Braune. FIRST EDITION IN GERMAN of this highly important work on conditioned reflexes and automatic responses in dogs which had consequences not only for medicine but for political thought, sociology and psychology, and led to the "behaviourist" view that much human behaviour can be understood as a series of conditioned reflexes. This edition was the first printed in any western language and was published some four years before the first English edition; the first (Russian) edition of 1897, printed in Cyrillic, is excessively rare. "Mouth-watering is a familiar experience and may be induced without the sight or smell of food. The sounds of a table being laid for lunch in another room may induce salivation in man, and the rattle of a dish in which its food is usually served will cause similar reaction in a dog. By detailed analysis of such facts as these Pavlov made great contributions to our knowledge of the physiology of digestion in a series of lectures delivered in St Petersburg and published in the following year. The elaboration of these experiment and their extension to children demonstrated how great a proportion of human behaviour is explicable as a series of conditioned reflexes. Pavlov's results are, indeed, clearly complementary to those of Freud and many regard them as of more fundamental significance. Like Freud's, this was the work of one man and a completely new departure. Pavlov was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1905" (PMM).
