THE FIRST GERMAN EDITION of the second volume (on birds) of Gesner's monumental work of natural history, often regarded as "the starting-point of modern zoology" (Anker). "Conrad Gesner was one of the great polymaths of the Renaissance ... His 'History of Animals' is an encyclopedia of contemporary knowledge, intended to replace not only medieval compilations but even Aristotle's work of the same title ... The work consists of five large volumes [of which the present volume is the second] ... The first four volumes deal with quadrupeds, birds and fishes; the posthumous fifth volume with snakes and, in an appendix, scorpions ... Although the Historia animalium does not yet show any recognition of a connexion between different forms of living nature and fails to conform to our modern ideas of biological research, it was a great step forward and remained the most authoritative zoological book between Aristotle and the publication of Ray's classification of fauna in 1693" (PMM). It gives descriptions and pictures of a large number of birds (altogether 217 figures) material for which was drawn from many different sources ... The work is considered to be the first novel in the English language. The present volume is complete in itself although two lesser-known 'sequels' were published (neither present here), "The Farther Adventures of Robinson Crusoe", first published in 1719, and "Serious Reflections during the Life and Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe", first published in 1720. "After twenty years of enormously prolific pamphleteering, political and sectarian, sometimes in verso, Defoe suddenly disclosed a genius for devising a tale of adventure ... This influence is not yet dissipated, for much of science fiction is basically Crusoe's island changed to a planet. At least equally relevant to the present purpose is the figure of the lonely human being subduing the pitiless forces of nature; going back to nature, indeed, and portraying the 'noble savage' in a way that made the book required reading for Rousseau's Emile" (PMM).

Bowman on verso of title. FIRST EDITION of this important work on, inter alia, ophthalmology and astronomy, in which the author introduces the terms 'prism', 'lens' and 'meniscus'. The first part of the work deals with the functions and workings of the human eye; the second, divided into six sections, includes "not only a discussion of parallax, astronomical refraction, and his eclipse instruments but also the annual variation in the apparent size of the sun. Since the changing size of the solar image is inversely proportional to the sun's distance, this key problem was closely related to his planetary theory" (DSB). The above information is given only to help find pages where corrections are clearly marked"; with the corresponding amendments and deletions made in the body of the text itself. Most of the deleted passages relate to Suzanne Warren's relationship with and marriage to the infamous double-agent Paul Cole (a.k.a. Harry Cole, and with various other aliases) about which - perhaps unsurprisingly - she seems especially sensitive, to the point of wishing it to be expunged altogether from Young's narrative. "The heroic story of a Frenchwoman in the Resistance Movement includes one of the most extraordinary and personally tragic episodes of the war in France. Suzanne Warren (her anglicised name in British Intelligence records) threw herself into the work of helping the escape from France of British soldiers and airmen. In the course of this she met a dashing Englishman [Cole] who ran the escape route organisation in northern France. She fell in love with him and they were married in Nazi-occupied Paris. Pia gives a lengthy description of the book and says that, according to a note in an 1894 catalogue of privately printed books, the first edition was printed some years before 1894 in an edition of just 65 copies, for private distribution; if so, it has entirely disappeared. FIRST EDITION IN GERMAN of this highly important work on conditioned reflexes and automatic responses in dogs which had consequences not only for medicine but for political thought, sociology and psychology, and led to the "behaviourist" view that much human behaviour can be understood as a series of conditioned reflexes. This edition was the first printed in any western language and was published some four years before the first English edition; the first (Russian) edition of 1897, printed in Cyrillic, is excessively rare. "Mouth-watering is a familiar experience and may be induced without the sight or smell of food. The sounds of a table being laid for lunch in another room may induce salivation in man, and the rattle of a dish in which its food is usually served will cause similar reaction in a dog. By detailed analysis of such facts as these Pavlov made great contributions to our knowledge of the physiology of digestion in a series of lectures delivered in St Petersburg and published in the following year. The elaboration of these experiment and their extension to children demonstrated how great a proportion of human behaviour is explicable as a series of conditioned reflexes. Pavlov's results are, indeed, clearly complementary to those of Freud and many regard them as of more fundamental significance. Like Freud's, this was the work of one man and a completely new departure. Pavlov was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1905" (PMM).
