Freeze, curated by Damien Hirst was the first showcase of the artist’s that came to be known as the YBAs, it was a seminal group exhibition, and many of the contributing artists are now internationaly regarded art superstars, none more so than the exhibition’s curator, Damien Hirst. The edition size of the catalogue is unknown, but it was certainly small, and it has been suggested that the catalogues that remained after the exhibition were burnt at a post-show bonfire party by the organisers, making the present copy exceedingly scarce.

MORRISON, James Douglas ('Jim'; 1943-1971). The Lords. Notes on Vision. [No place: by Western Lithographers for the author,] 1969. 2° (280 x 215mm). On 82 leaves of ivory paper (a little colour from the folder faintly transferred on small areas of some page edges). Loose as issued in the original blue card portfolio with red tie, upper side lettered in gilt (extremities rubbed, light soiling, trace of adhesive where flaps were once sealed). FIRST EDITION OF THE DOORS LEADER'S RARE FIRST BOOK. 1 of only 100 copies, self-published by Morrison. The Lords gathers aphorisms and observations which Morrison began collecting in notebooks while studying film at UCLA. It is a poetic commentary on contemporary social structure, which Morrison saw divided between 'lords' and 'sheep'. Morrison remarked: 'what that book is about is the powerlessness that people have in the face of reality... they have no real control over events or their own lives. Something is controlling them'; whereas 'the lords are a romantic race of people who have found a way to control their environment and their lives. They are somehow different from other people' (in Sugerman, The Doors, p.188). View on Christie's.com

A rare Elizabethan sea chart circa 1584, printed in German text, the English equivalent being `Coaftes of Normandie and Britanie with the Iflands adoninge` by Lucas Janzoon Waghenaer (Dutch 1534-1606), taken from the German edition of `Mariners Mirrour`, double glazed to expose text verso, 12.5 x 19in (32 x 38cm). * This chart was part of the first pilot book of European coasts from Scandinavia to Spain, combining detailed navigating instructions with readily useable sea charts. It is unusual as it has South at the top. The charts were engraved by the famous Dutch engraver Baptiste Van Doetechum and are amongst the most decoratively designed early sea charts. This particular chart shows two compass spurs, rumb lines, sailing ships, sea creatures and coastal profiles. A rectangular ornamental cartouche shows two separate scales of distance, being in Spanish and German leagues.
