Adams was awarded his VC, along with two other officers, for his part in an action on the 17th August 1897 in Upper Swat India, during the Tirah campaign. He has also made a number of marginal notes in pencil, correcting the facts as published. Winston Churchill's assistance in the risings is praised in the appendix to the text.
