Taylor for J. Callow, 1812.⁂ Gillman was a London surgeon and friend of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, writing the life of the latter in 1838.

Harbech', probably the seventeenth century physician Dr. Thomas Harbech (inscription to head of title); 'This book belongs to the Library in the Charity School Chamber in Nottingham given by Dr. William Standfast' The Reverend William Standfast (1683-1754) was the rector of the village of Clifton, a few miles from Nottingham. The library he founded was notable for the inclusion of a large number of scientific and medical books (ink inscription to verso of title).

Mental Health.- Bedlam.- Bowen (Thomas) An historical account of the origin, progress, and present state of Bethlem Hospital, founded by Henry the Eighth, for the cure of lunatics, and Enlarged by subsequent Benefactors, for the Reception and Maintenance of incurables, first edition, engraved frontispiece by W. Sharp after Stothard, C1 ink correction to notes, frontispiece with some foxing and offsetting on to title, disbound, 4to, no printer, 1783.⁂ Rare in commerce. It was published by order of the governors of the hospitals of Bethlem and Bridewell. Bethlem is one of the oldest psychiatric hospitals in the world, having been founded as a general hospital in 1247 in the City of London, and from the late 14th / early 15th centuries being specifically associated with the insane. It was around this time that it became more commonly referred to as 'Bedlam'. Notable patients included the artists Richard Dadd and Louis Wain, and the architect Pugin.

Bowdich died at the age of 33 on his third voyage to Africa. His wife Sarah edited and completed his work, adding three sections: 'a narrative of the continuance of the voyage to its completion'; 'a description of the English settlements on the River Gambia,' and an 'appendix, containing zoological and botanical descriptions, and translations from the Arabic.'. She also contributed the drawings for the work, which include depictions of local people, views and zoological figures.

Elzevier.- Geography.- Varenius (Bernhard) Geographia generalis in qua affectiones generales telluris explicantur, first edition, engraved pictorial title, folding woodcut plate, 3 (of 4) folding tables, occasional spotting, a few small stains, lightly browned, contemporary calf, later red morocco label and gilt to spine, lower cover detached, upper joint splitting, but holding firm, rubbed, [Willems 1120], 12mo, Amsterdam, Louis Elzevier, 1650. ⁂ 'The Geographia generalis established a framework for physical geography capable of including new facts of discovery as they arose. The work became the standard geographic text for more than a century' (DSB). The first English edition of 1672 was edited by Isaac Newton.

She was the first woman to study at a Dutch university and was proficient in fourteen languages.
