The charming watercolour Valentine card loosely inserted shows Cupid standing forlorn with his bow and arrow on the ground, saying "Boo hoo! my occupation's gone. February 14th 188 one. For Elspeth Crawhall, Ambulance Certificate." 'Aunt Elspa' was a family term of endearment for Crawhall's daughter Elspeth. Crawhall's son Joseph III reproduces an initial block 'JC' engraved by Bewick in his 'Newcastle Fishers' Garlands', 1864, and several Crawhall caricatures, one inscribed 'Mr. Bewick with J-C's [Joseph Crawhall II's] Comp'ts.', were sold in the dispersal of the Bewick estate in 1884.
