Dentistry.- Fox (Joseph) The Natural History of the Human Teeth, first edition, 13 engraved plates, each with explanatory leaf of text, tissue guards, contemporary ink inscription to title, some light foxing, water-staining towards end affecting corner of last few plates, ex-library copy with stamp to verso of title, modern half morocco, uncut, [Wellcome III, 50], 4to, 1803.⁂ The first work on orthodontics, by a pupil of John Hunter and the first dental surgeon at Guy's Hospital. Guy's was the first hospital to appoint a dental surgeon, in 1799, and the first to include lectures on dentistry, given by Fox and his assistant Astley Cooper. The work is much concerned with dental irregularities and their prevention and correction and was greatly influential.

Haslam was dismissed from his post in 1816 following the parliamentary reports into madhouses of 1815 (see lot ) which drew attention to the case of William Norris, an inmate of Bethlehem who was chained to a vertical iron bar and barely able to move.
