"The Republic Still Lives" Excessively Rare 1918 Proclamation "Poblacht na h'Eireann." The Provisional Government of the Irish Republic to the People of Ireland. Irishmen and Irishwomen ... . an early reprint of the 1916 Proclamation (probably the third printing) reset in similar style to the original, with an extra line in capitals at end after the signatures: "The Irish Republic Still Lives!" There is no printer or date mentioned, approx. 30" x 20", some creasing or minor dam. but generally in good condition. (See Bouch's study, "Bibliographical Society of Ireland." vol. 5, No. 3, bottom of page 51.] The first edition of the Proclamation was printed in Liberty Hall on the Sunday before the Easter Rising in 1916, in an edition of about 1000 copies, of which about 50 at most have survived. On the anniversary of the Rising, at Easter 1917, an almost exact type facsimile was printed and distributed in Dublin, which can be distinguished from the original mainly by the mis-spelling of Eamonn Ceannt's name. The second edition is known only from one or two? surviving copies. The present document is neither the 1916 or the 1917 edition. A similar copy is described by Bouch, who concludes that it probably was printed around the time of the General Election of December 1918 (at which Sinn Fein swept the country). this seems a reasonable conclusion, since if issued later than January 1919 one would expect the final line to include some reference to the First (or Second) Dail then sitting. It is in any case an excessively rare document. Apart from the copy examined by Bouch, we are aware of only one other copy of this printing, sold in Dublin some ten years ago and now believe to be in America. To our knowledge it is the last full-size edition of Proclamation published during the 1916-1921 period. (1)

Lot 569

Superb Association Copy Connolly (James) "Labour in Irish History" 8vo D. (Maunsel) 1910 First Edn., inscribed on f.e.p. 'To / Miss Winifred Carney / from the author / James Connolly', with the date 1914 added. Spine a little worn and discoloured, f.e.p. lightly foxed, otherwise a very good copy. (1) * Winifred Carney, from Bangor, Co. Down, became secretary to the Irish Textile Workers Union in Belfast in 1912. The following year she met Connolly while raising funds for the workers locked out in Dublin. She became his personal secretary, and was thereafter (apart from his wife) his closest and most trusted comrade. A telegram from Connolly summoned her to Dublin on 14 April 1916, and she served with him in the GPO throughout the Rising. She was one of only three women there when the GPO was evacuated. After the Rising she was arrested and held in various jails until Christmas 1916. She continued with her Labour and Socialist activities, and later was an active member of the Northern Ireland Labour Party. She died in 1943. 'Labour in Irish History' is itself a remarkable book. By a writer who left school at 11, with no academic background whatever, it is the first substantial work on the subject, still worth reading today. The first edition is very scarce in good condition, and presentation copies are extremely rare. * James Connolly signed the 1916 Proclamation, commanded the Irish Citizen Army in the GPO, was seriously wounded by a sniper, and was executed tied to a chair on 12 May 1916. A Superb Association copy.

A Limited Edition Ford Escort Eclipse Motor Car G343 DDP, first registered on the 26th May 1990, M.O.T. until 17th September 2016. An extremely well cared for example of this increasingly rare car, indicating only 61,446 miles, which appears fully corroborated by the DVLA M.O.T. test history which includes test dates and mileages as follows: 18/09/2006 - 57,799, 14/09/2007 - 58,116, 08/09/2008 - 58,376, 17/09/2009 - 58,777, 16/09/2010 - 59,151, 16/09/2011 - 59,548, 17/09/2012 - 60,060, 16/09/2013 - 60,444, 17/09/2014 - 60,732 & 09/09/2015 - 61, 335. This 5 door 1297cc hatchback in eye-catching metallic Bahama blue paint-work had a list price of £8,595, about £3,000 less than the popular Escort XR3, which it closely resembles, it was publicised as having a rear spoiler, low profile tyres, protective wide body mouldings, tinted glass, tilt/slide glass sun-roof with louvred blind, full instrument cluster with rev counter, power front windows, central locking, AM/FM stereo radio/cassette and 60/40 split rear seat back. The car was driven the 12 miles from Abergavenny to the sale-rooms and started easily and performed very well on the journey, the engine running sweetly and with unusually quiet valve gear for this well-proven push-rod engine. This car provides prospective owners with a rare opportunity to purchase a truly economical 5 speed gearbox, usable classic motor car in uncommonly good condition. It will surely attract much envy if attending any one of the increasing number of classic car events being organised. The former late owner's steering and gearstick/handbrake locks are included with the car.

Lot 89

- 1 of just 488 UK supplied examples - First owned by a member of the Rothschild family - Four keepers from new and in the vendor's custodianship for a total of over 30 years Heavily influenced by the Dino 206 GT Berlinetta Speciale concept car (a thinly disguised 206 S sports racer) which Pininfarina had unveiled at the 1965 Paris Salon, the roadgoing Dino 206 GT debuted in Turin two years later. Compellingly curvaceous and bodied in aluminium over a tubular steel chassis frame, it seemed a fitting tribute to Enzo Ferrari's late beloved son Alfredino. Boasting all-round, independent double-wishbone suspension, Koni shock absorbers, anti-roll bars and four-wheel disc brakes, the newcomer was the first Maranello production design to feature either rack-and-pinion steering or a mid-mounted engine. Although, the 1987cc 'quad-cam' unit in question was the work of Franco Rocchi, its inspiration came via Alfredino and the legendary Vittorio Jano (who between them had convinced Enzo Ferrari of the inherent engineering merits behind a compact V6 as early as 1956). Developing a quoted 180bhp at 8,000rpm, the free-revving powerplant was allied to five-speed manual transmission and promised a 140mph plus top speed. However, despite sensational looks and inspired, race-bred handling, the announcement of an even faster variant at the March 1969 Geneva Motor Show saw 206 GT production cease in August 1969 after just 152 cars. Thankfully, its successor - christened the 246 GT on account of its larger 2418cc engine - retained the same sublime Pininfarina styling (albeit draped over a 60mm longer wheelbase). With a quoted 195bhp and 166lbft of torque on tap, it was reputedly capable of 151mph and 0-60mph in 6.8 seconds. To ease manufacture, the revised two-seater utilized a cast-iron cylinder block and steel bodywork. Inheriting its forebear's cabin architecture complete with steeply raked bucket seats, aluminium fascia, suede-topped dashboard and 'chrome fingered' transmission gate, the model typically rode on Cromodora 'bolt on' alloy wheels. Phased in around mid-1971, the final Series III or Tipo E Dino benefited from revised gear ratios and a different fuel supply system (though, little else was changed). Regardless of Series / Tipo designations, just 488 right-hand drive 246 GTs are thought to have been UK supplied. The tidy-looking right-hand drive example we are delighted to offer here is finished in an attractive shade of Blue Scuro and has had just four keepers from new, one of whom has owned it twice and for a total of over 30 years. It is understood to have been bought new in March 1972 by a member of the Rothschild family. He retained it until 1977, at which point the title passed to a Richard Hughes of Oving near Aylesbury. The vendor first acquired the Ferrari in 1982 and used the Prancing Horse as his daily driver until selling it to a Kim Bowerman in 1989. It was during Bowerman's tenure that a considerable amount of refurbishment was apparently carried out by renowned marque specialist Rardley Motors of Hindhead - this is understood to have included a complete respray, Connollising of the Pale Blue hide interior and a lead-free conversion to the V6 engine. The vendor re-purchased the car in 1994, since when it has been used sparingly and still only displays a total of 63,888 miles. 'RHY 111' was treated to a new Lucas battery only a few weeks ago and the vendor currently classes the bodywork, paintwork, interior trim, engine and five-speed manual transmission as all being in 'good' order. He is offering the Ferrari complete with a raft of general paperwork and old V5s, tax discs and MOTs, plus the current V5C and a current MOT valid until July 15th; also a copy of the April 2008 edition of Classic & Sports Car for which 'RHY 111' graced the front cover and appeared inside as part of a feature article.

KEARNEY (PEADAR), THE SOLDIER'S SONG, FIRST EDITION WITH MUSICFour printed pages, in two parts, 31 x 24cm approx.. Written in 1909-1910 by Peadar Kearney, music by Paddy Heaney and arrangement by Cathal MacDubhgall. Later to become Amhrán na bhFiann when it was translated to the Irish by Liam Ó Rinn in 1923. Becoming the official Irish national anthem in 1926 following some debate about various alternatives. Peader Kearney was a founder member of the Irish Volunteers and The Soldier’s Song was sung in the GPO during the Rising and was popular among the Volunteers. As a result, later that same year (in December) it was published by Whelan and Son, Dublin, 6. Seamus Whelan was a sympathiser. The printer was Patrick Mahon of Yarnhall Street, who had also supplied some type for the printing of the 1916 Proclamation. The cover design, with rifle butt signed in a stylised C.macD., is by Cathal Mac Dúbhghaill. The first edition to include the music is rare and being sold not only on the 100th anniversary of the Rising, but also the anniversary of the document itself. Peadar Kearney joined the Irish Republican Brotherhood in the early 1903, and became a member of its Supreme Council. He served in the Jacob’s Factory garrison under Thomas MacDonagh during the rising. He evaded capture but was arrested during the War of Independence and interned at Ballykinler Camp in County Down in 1920-21. In the Dáil debate preceding the original acquisition of copyright by the State in 1934, there was discussion of the song's merits and flaws. Frank MacDermot said, Leaving out sentiment, I must confess, from both a literary and a musical point of view, I would regard the Soldier's Song as, shall we say, a jaunty little piece of vulgarity, and I think we could have done a lot better.]Thomas F. O'Higgins responded, National Anthems come about, not because of the suitability of the particular words or notes, but because they are adopted generally by the nation. That is exactly how the Soldiers' Song became a National Anthem in this country. It happened to be the Anthem on the lips of the people when they came into their own and when the outsiders evacuated the country and left the insiders here to make the best or the worst of the country. It was adopted by the people here before ever it was adopted by the Executive Council

***ADDITIONAL LOT***1918 PROCLAMATIONPoblacht na h-Eireann - The Provisional Government of the Irish Republic to The People of Ireland. 'Irishmen and Irish Women .... ' The 1918 reprint of the 1916 Proclamation reset in similar style to the original, with an extra line in capitals at end after the signatures: 'The Irish Republic Still Lives.' No printer or date mentioned, approx. 76cms x 51cms (30'' x 20''), some small tears, with some small loss of text, fold marks and some minor fraying at edges. unframed. The first edition of the Proclamation was printed in Liberty Hall on the Sunday before the Eater Rising in 1916, in an edition of about 1000 copies, of which about 50 at most have survived. On the anniversary of the Rising, at Easter 1917, an almost exact type facsimile was printed and distributed in Dublin, see lot 99. A similar copy to this is described by Bouch, who concludes that it probably was printed around the time of an election, probably the General Election of December 1918 (at which Sinn Fein swept the country). This seems a reasonable conclusion, since if issued later than January 1919 one would expect the final line to include some reference to the First (or Second) Dail then siting. A rare document. Literature: Bouch - ''Bibliographical Society of Ireland,'' Vol. 5, No. 2, page 51.
