RUSKIN INTEREST. [RUSKIN (J)]. SEVERN, (Joan Ruskin and family). A small group of autograph letters to and from members of the Severn family, various dates, 1832 - c.1904, about 30 letters in total plus a few rather amateurish drawings and watercolours attributed to Cecil Lawson Jr. (son of the artist Cecil Lawson). This group includes a three-page letter (a copy letter?) apparently by John Ruskin, but not in his hand, to his god-daughter Constance [Oldham], Brantwood, Coniston. 28th August 1886, signed G. P. (Godparent) at the end in which he apologises for his behaviour - 'I admit that I must have been inexcusably horrid, even now that I begin to think myself the least bit nice again - and I'm utterly frightened that I should be ever so horrid again. And I'm very penitent and dreadfully puzzled and wondering whether I'm a bit worth all the worry - and the turtle soup - and the peas - and the pretty letters and the no end of sugar almond messages - from my G. D. (god-daughter?) ...'. This letter possibly dates from a time when Ruskin was suffering from a bout of mental instability. Another letter to an unidentified person's mother describes a visit to Brantwood with Constance and a meeting with Ruskin - '...yesterday I had to drive to Brantwood to take back the priceless treasures he had lent us and he made me stay luncheon and sail back afterwards. I was shown at once to a study - placed where I had the best view the lake afforded & then shown treasure after treasure...Then he showed me books - the ms. of Scott's novels....'. Another letter also describes a meeting with Ruskin. Also a testimonial written by Vincent Novello, dated 1832, for the organist Thomas Henry Severn (brother of Henry Severn who was the father of the artist Arthur Severn), and a long 3 page letter also from Novello, dated 1846, to Thomas Severn. Included also are letters by Seffler, T. Cooke, Henry Smart and others to T. H. Severn on musical matters; together with The Ruskin Birthday Book, 1883 first edition, large 8vo, morocco. Included are inscriptions or entries by Joan Ruskin Severn to her cousin Marion Severn - 'with love, & all good wishes...11th March 1901' and 42 manuscript entries, including John Ruskin (signature cut from a crossed cheque and pasted in), Edward Elgar, Arthur Severn, with pen and ink sketch, Joan Ruskin Severn and Mary Severn Perry with small pen and ink sketch of the Pyramids and the Nile. There are also the signatures of a number of musicians with autograph music quotations including Hamilton Harty, Hubert Barth and Roger Quilter.
