This is "the earliest treatise on domestic heating and the basis of all eighteenth-century books on the subject in English...Desaguliers published a translation of Gauger's book, omitting what he thought superfluous and adding his own improvements to suit the burning of coal in England". (Harris). Maybe it was Desaguliers' alterations which left the owner unimpressed. Despite ESTC calling for 4pp. appendix at end Harris does not; this appears to be part of the second edition of 1736 which states "with an Appendix" on the title.

Georg Swarzenski (1876-1957), art historian and museum curator who shaped much of the cultural life of Frankfurt am Main over three decades.
Botany & Medicine.- Hales (Stephen) Statical Essays: Containing Vegetable Staticks; Or, an Account of some Statical Experiments on the Sap in Vegetables...[&] Haemastatics..., 2 vol., vol.1 third edition, vol.2 second edition, 19 engraved plates, vol.2 with initial announcement leaf, a few stains to vol.1, light browning to vol.2, the botanist & ecologist David Bellamy's copy with his bookplate, modern calf, spines tooled in blind with red morocco labels, [Henrey 779; cf.PMM 189, first editions], 8vo, for W.Innys and R.Manby, 1738-1740.⁂ Combination of two important works: vol.1 is a significant contribution to plant physiology and nutrition, while vol.2 comprises Haemastatics which includes Hales's pioneering measurement of blood pressure. This is the greatest single contribution to our knowledge of the vascular system after Harvey and lead to the development of the blood-pressure measuring instruments used today.
