Dennis Farr & Eva Chadwick: Lynn Chadwick Sculptor, With a Complete Illustrated Catalogue 1947-2003, Farnham, 2014, p. 343, no. 795 (illustration of another cast)For additional videos or images of the pieces included in this lot please contact the department on pictures@dreweatts.com Together with his contemporaries Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, Jacob Epstein and Eduardo Paolozzi, Chadwick is inextricably associated with the British Modernist Sculpture movement of the mid-20th century. Initially specialising in architectural design both before and after the Second World War, by 1946, Chadwick had started to move away from the intangible world of design instead finding himself increasingly drawn to the tangible nature of objects. A year later, in 1947, Chadwick made his first mobile. Encouraged by his employer at the time, Rodney Thomas, these wire, metal, copper, and brass shapes were first used to decorate the exhibition stands of Thomas' company and then later turned into 'stabiles' by adding ground supports. Around 60 mobiles were created between 1947 and 1952.Although very few of these mobiles survive today, this was clearly the very beginning of what would eventually evolve into Chadwick's signature bronze and steel abstract figures that we know so well today. In 1951, Chadwick was commissioned by the Arts Council of Britain to produce a large-scale sculpture for the Festival of Britain, The Fisheater, which went on to be exhibited at the Tate Gallery until 1952. It was also at this time that Chadwick was asked to present to the selection committee of the XXVI Venice Biennale who selected him together with seven other emerging British artists including Kenneth Armitage, Robert Adams, and Eduardo Paolozzi to exhibit in Venice that year. It was after this exhibition that Chadwick really established his reputation as a member of the New British Sculptors. In 1956, Chadwick returned to the Venice Biennale, this time winning the International Sculpture Prize - the youngest artist ever to do so. During this period Chadwick became increasingly interested in form with his designs becoming more identifiable as figures; their thin and tapering legs and geometric heads, in Chadwick's words 'adding flesh to the skeletons'. By the 1960s, Chadwick was experimenting with bronze casting and by the 1970s, he had established a visible vocabulary of sexual differentiation - triangle or diamond heads for female and square or rectangular heads for male. In addition, the technique of adding polished facets to his figures both added texture and accentuated specific parts of anatomy. This is clearly demonstrated in Walking Cloaked Figures VIII which also combines the artist's timeless architectonic forms with elements of the human, animal and mechanical. The use of clothing, specifically flaring cloaks helps to add a sense of movement to the work. There is no real narrative to Chadwick's works, but it is perhaps the stoic silence and anonymous strength which makes his works so intriguing and timeless.Chadwick remained active until only a few years before his death in 2003, aged 88. Throughout his career and beyond Chadwick remains a recognised household name. In 1964, he was awarded a CBE, and later in 1984 made Officer de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France. In 2001 he was appointed Senior Academician at the Royal Academy of Arts, London. His work is held in major collections and galleries around the world including the Tate Gallery, London, and Museum of Modern Art, New York.Condition Report: In overall good original condition. Some surface dirt, notably to crevasses. May benefit from a light clean. Condition Report Disclaimer

Ex-Barry Sheene, Bob Smith 1979 Dunstall Suzuki GS1000 Formula 1 Racing MotorcycleFrame no. GS1000-521087Engine no. GS1000-130636 Yoshimura engine no. 13• The only Japanese four-stroke raced by Barry Sheene• Professionally restored to its current condition in the mid-1990s• Displayed in the Lakeland Museum for many yearsFollowing a request from Suzuki GB sales Director, Maurice Knight, the machine offered here was assigned to Barry Sheene for him to ride at the August Bank Holiday meeting at Oulton Park in 1979. UK importer Heron Suzuki was interested in promoting production-based racing and had asked Paul Dunstall to enter Yoshimura-prepared factory GS1000s in TT Formula 1 events in 1979. Barry Sheene was the Texaco-sponsored Heron Suzuki team's No. 1 rider in Grands Prix and his dislike of racing heavyweight four-strokes was well known, once referring to them as 'muck spreaders'. Before the race Sheene asked works mechanic Martyn Ogbourne to do a safety check and a rider fitting check on the unfamiliar machine. The seat had to be raised by some 2' to get Barry comfortable, a legacy of the leg injuries he had sustained at Daytona. His dislike of four-strokes notwithstanding, Sheene acquitted himself with distinction in his one-off ride at Oulton Park, finishing a close 2nd to Honda-mounted Ron Haslam with Honda-mounted Mick Grant 3rd. Indeed, the Suzuki star might have won had he not been balked by a back-marker on the final lap. Sheene and Haslam shared the fastest lap at 100.00mph. This Dunstall Suzuki is believed to be the only Japanese four-stroke Barry ever raced. For its first foray into Formula 1 racing, Suzuki adopted a relatively cautious approach to tuning the GS1000 roadster. Machines would be sent from Japan to Yoshimura in California where the engines received special cams, larger inlet valves, high-compression slipper pistons, self-generating ignition, close-ratio gears and a stronger clutch basket, the crankshaft, con-rods and bottom end being left stock. Retaining the standard 28mm carburettors (a Formula 1 requirement), the Yoshi-tuned GS produced around 114bhp with a wide spread of useable power. This particular engine was engraved 'No.13' by Yoshimura at the time of tuning. Changes to the stock chassis included a shorter Peckett & McNab swinging arm; RG500 fork yokes; Campagnolo alloy wheels; and AP Lockheed disc brakes. The Dunstall Suzuki team's regular riders were Steve Machin and Bob Smith, but Sheene's 2nd place at Oulton would be its best result in 1979. Ron Haslam took the championship for Honda that year and for the following season Suzuki responded with a proper factory racer: the XR69.There is a documented chain of ownership since this machine was sold by the Dunstall Suzuki team, one notable owner being George Beale, who restored the bike in the mid-1990s to its current condition. It later spent many years on display in the Lakeland Museum. The current owners have had the machine on display at Oliver's Mount, and were invited by Classic Team Suzuki to display it in their hall of fame at Donington Park in 2017, the vendor advises this is where it was checked over and verbally authenticated by Martyn Ogbourne. There is also an email on file from Martyn Ogbourne to Tim Davies (Suzuki GB), perusal recommended. The Dunstall Suzuki has also featured in a seven-page article in the July 2019 edition of Classic Bike magazine.Footnotes:As with all Lots in the Sale, this Lot is sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness, and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

2014 MV Agusta F3 800 AgoRegistration no. MV14 AGOFrame no. ZCGF320BBEV004779Engine no. F31 A E 04910In 2014, MV Agusta introduced a special, limited-edition version of its F3 800 middleweight sports bike: the Ago, named in honour of the former world champion Giacomo Agostini, 13 of whose 15 world titles had been secured riding the Italian manufacturer's machines. The bikes were finished in the Italian tricolore (red, white and green) and autographed by Agostini. Production was limited to 300 units. Introduced in 2013, the F3 800 is a development of the F3 675, which had first appeared the preceding year. For the F3 800, the three-cylinder engine's stroke was lengthened and maximum power increased to 148bhp, 20 horsepower more than the F3 675, while there was an impressive 30bhp more in the midrange. The 675's superb chassis was left untouched, though braking was enhanced by Brembo monobloc callipers, while the Ago version was equipped with lightweight components made of magnesium and carbon fibre, bringing the weight down to 171kg (376.2lb).Number '14' of the 300 built, this Ago has covered a mere 267 miles from new (purchase invoice on file). The MV was last serviced by Moto Corsa in July 2019 and last ran circa two years ago (there is a service indicator showing). Kept in dry storage and trickle charged, this desirable limited edition MV is described as 'like new' throughout.Footnotes:As with all Lots in the Sale, this Lot is sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness, and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 366

1984 Honda 49cc Limited Edition Gold MonkeyRegistration no. not registeredFrame no. Z50J-1603141Engine no. Z50JE-1603124With the launch of the CZ100¬ in 1960, Honda created the class of machine known as 'monkey bikes', so called because of their diminutive stature. The power unit was the C100 step-thru's reliable four-stroke single. An ultra-short wheelbase, small wheels and a vestigial fuel tank were all features of a machine which, in the case of the folding handlebar version, could be fitted into the boot of a car. In 1974, an important milestone in Monkey development was reached with the launch of the Z50J, which featured front and rear suspension like a 'proper' motorcycle while retaining the overhead-camshaft engine and 8' wheels, first seen on the Z50M and Z50A respectively.Offered here is an example of the rare and collectible 1984 1st Series Honda Gold Monkey (there was a 2nd Series in 1997). A limited edition model, it is one of only 5,000 built for the Japanese market and not officially sold abroad. Currently displaying a total of only 709 kilometres on the odometer, the machine is exceptionally well preserved for its age, the gold finish being mostly untarnished, and appears to retain its original tyres. Recently imported from Japan and last run in September 2021, it would make an ideal Christmas present for someone. Offered with a NOVA declaration, this charming little machine is a 'must have' for the serious mini-bike collector.Footnotes:As with all Lots in the Sale, this Lot is sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness, and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 380

1988 Triumph 750cc BonnevilleRegistration no. not registeredFrame no. SCXB7550 4JN001258Engine no. 001258•One owner from new•Fully documented•16 miles recordedThe final phase of the Triumph twin's development began in 1972 with the first appearance of the new enlarged-to-750cc version of the Bonneville, the increase in bore size necessitating a new crankcase to accommodate the larger barrel. Other improvements included a new ten-stud cylinder head, triplex primary chain, stronger transmission and a disc front brake. A five-speed gearbox, introduced on the preceding 650 Bonneville, was standard equipment on the 750. After the Meriden debacle, Triumph continued with the Bonneville as its main model, ringing the changes to produce a succession of special and celebratory editions, while significant technological developments included the adoption of electronic ignition and the introduction of models with electric starting and an 8-valve cylinder head. It was, of course, too little too late and the company folded in the early 1980s, its remains passing into the hands of entrepreneur John Bloor. While the Bloor-owned company developed an entirely new range of up-to-the-minute models, Les Harris was licensed to produce Triumph Bonnevilles at his factory in Newton Abbot, Devon from 1985. The last Bonneville produced, this machine left the Newton Abbot production line on 9th March 1988 and was purchased by the late owner on 6th December 1988 for delivery on the 6th January 1989. The Triumph was purchased from Jack Lilley Ltd and comes with their invoice for £5,000 and letter confirming that this is the last Bonneville made; the machine also comes with a letter confirming same signed by Les Harris. Also included is a Certificate for Car Tax from Triumph Motorcycles dated 15th December 1988 (signed by Les Harris) and a copy of an article on Les Harris published in The Classic Motor Cycle (June 2004 edition). The last Bonneville is pictured with Les on page 66. The Bonnie also comes with six keys; its original unstamped warranty book; and an owner's handbook (1987). This historic machine has a recorded mileage of only 16 miles and still has its original engine tag with details of the frame number, engine number, and general specification with 'RIP' under Remarks. A 'must have' for the serious Triumph collector.Footnotes:As with all Lots in the Sale, this Lot is sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness, and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 470

1959 Ducati 175cc Formula 3 Racing MotorcycleFrame no. F512Engine no. *F512*•Ultra-rare, hand-built, limited edition model•Raced by Sonny Angel of San Diego, California•Fully restored by recognised specialists•Previously offered from the Jack Silverman Collection'As early as 1959, in line with their policy of replacing old with new, Ducati phased out its Gran Sport models in favour of the new Formula 3 series. It was to be built in three engines: the 175 (1959-61), the 125 (1959-61) and the 250 (1961-62). All three were pure-bred, hand-built racing motorcycles, built for Italian Formula 3 competition.' – Mick Walker, 'Ducati- The Racing Story'.For the production racing classes, Ducati offered its Formula 3 model in 125cc, 175cc and (later) 250cc capacities. Although visibly similar to their road-going equivalents, these were very different motorcycles featuring sand-cast crankcases and special engine internals, while the camshaft bevels and primary drive featured straight-cut gears. The gearbox was a four-speeder. Lower and lighter than the roadster versions, the frames featured a lowered steering head, shorter forks, and a shorter swinging arm. Brakes were upgraded to racing specification. Ducati quoted a maximum power output of 16bhp for the 175. The Formula 3's first major success came in 1958, shortly after its introduction, when Francesco Villa rode one to victory in the 175 F3 race supporting the Grand Prix des Nations at Monza. In its native Italy the 125 Formula 3 would provide Ducati with regular victories in that class into the mid-1960s. In the USA, works rider Franco Farné travelled the country visiting Ducati dealerships to promote the brand, as well as taking in an extensive programme of racing for which the factory had provided him with a 175 F3 and a 125 Desmo single. At Daytona in March 1959, shortly after arriving, Farné secured a memorable victory in the 250 class riding the 175cc F3. Franco Villa took over in 1960 and continued the successful promotion of Ducati's OHC singles for importer Berliner Motor Corporation.Hand built in small numbers, the Formula 3 Ducatis were necessarily expensive; indeed, in the UK the 175 cost more than a 500cc Manx Norton! Understandably, production of these exotic Formula 3 models was limited, perhaps amounting to fewer than 100, making any genuine example extremely rare today. This genuine Ducati Formula 3 was raced by Sonny Angel of San Diego, California before being enjoyed as part of the private collection belonging to a local discerning enthusiast. It was fully and correctly restored by marque expert Ted Henry of Torrance, California, with Frank Scurria rebuilding the engine before the machine became part of Hollywood photographer, Guy Webster's, collection. It was then acquired by the world famous Jack Silverman Collection until it was purchased by the current vendor at Bonhams' Autumn Stafford Sale in October 2017. The machine has not been used/run since acquisition and has been kept dry stored in the garage. Accordingly, it will need to be fully re-commissioned to a greater or lesser extent before use.Footnotes:As with all Lots in the Sale, this Lot is sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness, and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

From the estate of the late Roy Houghton 1953 Norton 497cc Dominator 88 De LuxeRegistration no. RTE 388Frame no. J122 53447Engine no. 53447 J122 (re-stamped)This very early Dominator 88 De Luxe was first owned by Edgar Lawrenson of Lancaster. Remarkably, 'RTE 388' comes with a set of charming b&w photographs taken by Mr Lawrenson when he took the Norton on a touring holiday of Spain in 1954. In 1958 the Dominator passed to well-known Norton collector, John Clucas, who would own it until 1997. The machine then passed to one Ed Bickerton, who sold it to Roy Houghton in 1998 (sales receipts on file). Believed an older restoration, the Norton appears highly original and in 2006 was featured as a fine example of the type in The Classic Motor Cycle (November edition, photocopy available). The machine also comes with its original old-style buff logbook; old/current V5/V5C Registration Certificates; some expired tax discs; and the aforementioned receipts.Footnotes:As with all Lots in the Sale, this Lot is sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness, and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The legs came from a plastic stork, which he had seen at Woolworths. The birds were sold out, but only a pair of legs without torso was left. The playful table lamp was very well received when it first came out, and in the beginning was made as a limited and numbered series of 500 pieces.

JOY DIVISION VINYL. Lovely pack of rare vinyl to include Closer 180g reissue (0190295797119), Unknown Pleasure limited edition ruby red 180g reissue (0190295443238), sealed Joy Division +- singles 1978-80 box set, an original 7" test pressing of Atmosphere (FAC213) plus Grace Jones performing She's Lost Control across 3 formats (12", 7" and CD). All are generally in Ex+ to NM condition.I enjoyed the playback sessions of the new remaster of ‘Unknown Pleasures’ so much in Walthamstow. Brand new record on an analogue Hi-Fi system through an analogue P.A. The sound was wonderful... I was lost in it. I was so looking forward to the ‘Closer’ ones which we were going to do all over England... but Covid struck ;( Grace Jones was, of course, the first artist to cover a Joy Division song, ‘She’s Lost Control’ with Sly and Robbie, the first money we ever earned, £2K, we were delighted. Pottsy and me were asked by Polydor’s infamous A an R man ‘The Colonel’ (the same one who bought us a round of drinks at The Moonlight Club in London that Ian Curtis, much to his annoyance ended up paying for). We did a 12” mix with me singing with Grace, which was fantastic, but by then she was in litigation with her record company so it was shelved. Damn you, lawyers.

All appear unplayed.A lovely collection of a few of our best tracks. Warner Brothers have been very busy and I must admit to being wary at first, but my goodness they have all done so well.
