Henrique, warmly embraced the cause of Filipe II of Spain, whose right to succession he defended in writing against those who challenged him. Francisco de Mello (ca. 1575-ca. 1652), Huntmaster of the Kingdom, ambassador to France and governor of the Algarve, one of the forty noblemen who participated in the conspiracy that would come to evolve into the 1640 revolution. The edition, without the conventional title page, consists of a sheet with the title abbreviation in large calligraphed characters: EXCELMA Domus de MELLO, three chapter separators, eight typographic sheets and 34 family trees copperplate printed (with typographed text ), which seek to demonstrate the direct descent of the Mellos from Charlemagne to the Dukes of Parma. Recent full sheepskin binding (with a protective case), with gold ornamental borders on the covers, seven gold closed panels on the spine, patina in the manner of the period and a golden roulette on the squares. [em falta]; 20 cm.- E., Original edition of the first description of the Kingdom of Congo, by the Portuguese explorer and merchant Duarte Lopes (fl. 1578), born in Benavente. The author, who left Lisbon for Africa in 1578, would occupy an influential position with the Catholic King of Congo, D. Álvaro, who commissioned him to represent him with Philip II of Spain and Pope Sixtus V. Upon his arrival in Rome, Duarte Lopes met the Italian humanist and traveler Filippo Pigafetta (1533-1604) to whom he dictated his narrative, which he published in the present edition in 1591. The work achieved great success, having been translated into several languages and integrated in the first part of Theodore de Bry's "Petits Voyages", published in 1597 (in German) and in 1598 (in Latin). The edition opens with a copperplate printed architectural frontispiece (verso in white), which includes the coat of arms of D. Antonio Migliore, bishop of San Marco to whom it was dedicated; followed by the dedication (f. [2 and 3]), dated 7 August 1591, and the "Tavola de’ capitoli" (f. [4]); the text extends over the next 82 pages and ends with a record (f. k6r, blank verso). At the end, there are eight double-page engravings (22x33 cm) representing a palm tree, a zebra and indigenous customs (6). The two fold-out maps of Congo and Africa, which unfortunately are not present, should also be found at the end of the volume. Second engraving (zebra) with missing lower margin. Exemplary with some foxing and occasional tidal stains on the lower margin (and some corners) of about 16 leaves. Some minor imperfections that do not affect the integrity of the volume. Full flexible parchment contemporary binding, with damage to the lower half of the spine (recoverable). It retains the original endpapers (with a French bookseller's stamp on the first pastedown). Sebastião. His poem Felississima victoria..., in fifteen cantos, composed in Spanish, narrates the naval battle of Lepanto, which took place in 1571, between the forces of the Christian League, led by D. João of Austria (bastard son of Charles V) and the Turkish armada, under the command of Ali Pasha. The edition, almost entirely printed in italics on very thin paper, is illustrated with 15 allusive woodcuts (80x105 mm.), accompanied by as many historical capitals, at the beginning of each canto. The title page has a xylographic cartouche surrounding the title, bearing, on the back, the coat of arms of Philip II, King of Spain, to whom the work is dedicated. The last folio, with a blank back, includes a colophon, with the printer's mark. Exemplary overly trimmed copy, especially on the outer lateral margin, affecting the composition of the title page (front and back), beginning of the first canto (engraving and text of sheet A1r) and beginning of the second canto (only engraving of sheet B4v). His drawings were perfected and engraved by J. Clark to illustrate one of the most beautiful books about Portugal and Spain published in the 19th century. Variant of the 1810 edition, containing two parts (in this copy bound in reverse order). The first part ("Sketches") is illustrated with 42 aquatints coloured by hand, representing, above all, popular costumes and views of localities, followed by 13 equally coloured aquatints, with Portuguese, French and Spanish military uniforms. This should be followed by the "Revue historique...", not illustrated, which in the present copy is bound at the beginning of the volume. The text is bilingual in English and French. The engravings match exactly with the respective explanatory text sheets (numbered 1 to 38), with sheets 5, 18, 32 and 37 corresponding to two engravings each. Of these four engravings, only the engraving on S. 18 is mentioned in the index. Exemplary with rare foxing, but in general, clean and with large margins. From the author's biography (16th century), Franciscan from the Algarve province, we only know that he traveled throughout Europe, especially in Italy, and lived for almost three years in the Holy Land, having passed through Trento at the time of the third phase of the Council. O "Itinerário" is an account of his troubled pilgrimage, led by Friar Bonifácio of Ragusa, in which about 60 priests took part. The title page presents, in the centre, the coat of arms of D. Miguel de Castro, Archbishop of Lisbon; the next three pages, framed by xylographic frames, include the royal charter, the dedication to D. Miguel and a message to devotees looking forward to visiting the Holy Land. The text of the trip is developed in the following 301 sheets, after which there is a "tavoada" in three sheets, with identical frames, ending with a small engraving of Death; there follows the index, which occupies three sheets and presents, at the end, an engraving with the coat of arms of Portugal; in front of the last sheet, the errata, framed by two xylographic elements: "Erros deste lilvro"; on the back, another full page engraving with the coat of arms of Portugal. Complete copy, slightly trimmed (carmine edges), with light handling; restoration on the lower outer corners of the first 16 and last 14 sheets; some sections appear to have been washed, namely those that have been restored. The copy belonged to Prof. Freiras Simões (ex-libris on the back cover and stamp on the flyleaf). Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the painting which was originally published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for the limited edition collection of The Songbirds of the Fifty States. Each cover was postmarked on the anniversary of statehood in the appropriate state capital. The tiny Audubon's Warbler bears blue-gray plumage which breaks in five spots to reveal lovely golden feathers. This hearty woodland beauty often nests at extremely high altitudes, then spends the cold winter months in the same area, only at lower elevations. Though the weather may bring cold and snow, he rarely forsakes his western home. When spring arrives and the ice and snow begin to melt, it is one of the first birds to sing its cheerful song from high in the evergreens. Image Size: 8.5 x 8.75 in. Overall Size: 18 x 18 in. Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Eastern Bluebird" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This artwork was originally published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for the limited edition collection of The Songbirds of the Fifty States. Each cover was postmarked on the anniversary of statehood in the appropriate state capital. There is no more blue than that of a bluebird returning in the spring. Even before winter has retreated and the first hints of green caress the meadows and forests, the bluebird will make its colorful appearance in northern climates. One cannot help but notice this bright beacon in an otherwise drab late winter landscape, for it is as if a bit of the sky had been plucked out and brought down to earth. In the United States, there are three distinct species of bluebird, all of the genus Sialia. The Eastern bluebird is found in the fields and orchards of the eastern half of the United States. The Western bluebird finds the hills, forests and farms of the Far West to its liking, while the Mountain bluebird makes the crags and prairie of Rocky Mountain states its home. Bluebirds nest in tree cavities, and such places normally make very good homes. However, the cutting of dead trees for firewood or aesthetics as well as the introduction of Old World English sparrows and starlings, has sent the Eastern bluebird in particular into a serious decline. Consequently, some ornithologists and bird enthusiasts have acted to help out the bluebird by constucting bird houses designed especially for the Eastern bluebird. The early results are promising and it appears as if this azure beauty will continue to brighten the drab fields of pre-spring. Image Size: 8.5 x 8.75 in. Overall Size: 18 x 18 in. Unframed.
