Having reached the summit Simpson fell during the descent causing horrific injuries. Yates attempted to lower him down in stages on a rope but he slipped over an edge and Yates, unable to pull him up, had to make the appalling decision to cut the rope. Thinking Simpson was undoubtedly dead Yates returned to camp but after three days, just as Yates was about to leave the area, Simpson crawled into camp.

Natural Law in Terrestrial Phenomena... , 1st edition, 1902, author's dummy copy of his own book with printed prelims only, the remaining leaves blank and used as a scrap diary by Digby, including a small number of letters, postcards, cuttings and scraps, etc., the diary notes recording details from the period 1902-04, copy letters to Lord Curzon and others, the final 41 numbered leaves written to rectos only and being an account of a three-week trip to Norway, original cloth gilt, rubbed, 8vo William Digby, CIE, was a journalist and author of many works including several relating to India. He was created a Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire in 1879 for his efforts on behalf of the famine-stricken people of South India. Mahatma Gandhi wrote an obituary of William Digby in Indian Opinion: 'By the death of Mr William Digby, CIE, India has lost a champion whom it will be difficult to replace. His advocacy of the Indian cause was strenuous and well-informed. His unrivalled experience of India always stood him in good stead in answering his opponents.
