Deux figures en porcelaine formant pendants représentant un dandy et une femme, Meissen, circa 1919-1923 A pair of Meissen figure of a dandy (Geck) and a lady (Biedermeierdame), circa 1919-1923Modelled by Paul Scheurich, the dandy wearing a suit in the style of the 1830s of a pale purple jacket, black bow tie and white trousers, holding a book in his right hand, his left arm on his hip, leaning on a pedestal moulded with a medallion of a putto and trailing ivy, applied with a flower and leaves, on an oval base, the reverse incised 'Scheurich'; the lady wearing a dress in the style of the 1830s edged in blue, leaning on a pedestal with her hands crossed, a rose and an evening bag in her hands, on an oval base applied with a flower and leaves at the base of the pedestal, 24.5cm (Geck) and 24.1cm (lady) high, crossed swords marks to both in underglaze-blue, incised model number F. 235, impressed 'Bossierer' numeral 49 and painter's numeral 65 in grey (Geck); incised model number F 241, impressed 'Bossierer' numeral 86 and painter's numeral 74 in iron-red (lady) (minuscule chips to applied flower on lady) (2)Footnotes:Literature:Rafael 1995a, nos. 7 and 8Exhibited:Meissen, Schauhalle der Staatlichen Porzellan-Manufaktur Meissen, Paul Scheurich 1883-1945 Porzellane für die Meissener Manufaktur, 21 September 1995-10 January 1996;Paris, Musée National de Céramique à Sèvres, Chefs d'oeuvres céramiques de collections privée allemandes, 30 June-20 July 1996, nos. S2 and S3Scheurich's background as a graphic artist is evident in his close attention to detail on both the dandy and the lady: they are drawings translated into porcelain (Rafael 1995a, p. 34). The dandy derives from illustrations by Scheurich of 1912 for an edition of Jean Paul's 'Doktor Katzenbergers Badreise' in which all the men are depicted in Biedermeier costume. In particular, the character of the conceited playwright Theudobach appears to have been the model for the dandy (Rafael 1995a, ill. 7/8.2). Scheurich depicted both characters in later illustrations, as well as the lady in the group 'Geschwister' (see lot 84), albeit in a different costume.Scheurich offered the model of the dandy to the Meissen manufactory in November 1916, though it took another three years until it was produced in porcelain. The manufactory requested a pair to the figure, which Scheurich had not planned, and so he reworked the plaster model of the dandy and created the figure of the lady to go with it, which the manufactory purchased in October 1917 (both figures cost RM 3,000). Delays caused by the war and Scheurich's illness in late 1917/early 1918 meant that the Scheurich's designs for the colouring were only delivered in August 1918, and the first painted examples were produced in May 1919.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

SCHEURICH' above the dates 1918-19 and 'DIE STAATLICHE/ PORZELLAN-MANUFAKTUR/ IN MEISSEN', pierced for hanging on the reverse of the frame, 19.5cm by 14.7cm, impressed crossed swords mark above '100 AUSFORMUNGEN/ No'Footnotes:Literature:Rafael 1995a, ill. 13.1Exhibited:Meissen, Schauhalle der Staatlichen Porzellan-Manufaktur Meissen, Paul Scheurich 1883-1945 Porzellane für die Meissener Manufaktur, 21 September 1995-10 January 1996;Meissen, Museum der Meissen Porzellan-Stiftung, Paul Scheurich. Porzellangestalter Zeichner Grafiker, 6 March 2020-21 February 2021One of Max Adolf Pfeiffer's first initiatives when he became Director of the Meissen manufactory in November 1918 was the introduction of a New Year's gift of a plaque for friends of the manufactory, artists and collectors. Only the best artists were entrusted with these commissions, for which they were allowed complete artistic freedom. The New Year's plaques were also a signal of Pfeiffer's intention that ceramics should become a medium of modern art. Another of Pfeiffer's initiatives was the revival of stoneware production at Meissen, in which he was assisted by the manufactory chemist, William Funk. Known as 'Böttger stoneware', after the manufactory's founder, it was produced for a few years from 1710 until the manufactory perfected the production of white porcelain after which production and interest in the material lapsed. Pfeiffer recognised the possibilities of the material and, in particular, its suitability for modern art (polished stoneware could be a more affordable alternative of comparable quality for sculptures that were otherwise only executed in bronze). Stoneware is especially suited to small-scale plaques and medallions this art reached new heights of artistic quality under Pfeiffer's directorship with medallions by artists such as Scheurich, Paul Börner, Max Esser, and even Oskar Kokoschka.Paul Scheurich's New Year's plaque for 1919 was not only the manufactory's first, it was also the first limited edition signed by the artist, and it was the first modern work of art in the newly-revived Böttger stoneware; it merged the oldest tradition of the manufactory with the newest artistic taste. The manufactory purchased the model on 18 November 1918 for RM 200 and it was initially produced in an edition of 100 (50 in biscuit porcelain [nos. 1-50] and 50 in Böttger stoneware [nos. 51-100]).For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 82

Unique statuette en biscuit représentant une femme à l'éventail, Meissen, circa 1937 A unique Meissen biscuit figure of the lady with fan (Stehende Dame mit Fächer), circa 1937Modelled by Paul Scheurich, the lady with short waved hair wearing a clinging evening dress with pleated flounce on her left hip, her arms crossed with a large ostrich feather fan held to her right hip, on a square base, the side incised 'SCHEURICH 29', 46.5cm high, crossed swords mark in blue to the rear of the base, impressed crossed swords mark within a triangle, incised model number A 1224, impressed former numeral 50 for Hoberg (restoration to fingers on her left hand)Footnotes:Provenance: Heinrich Hoberg, Chief Repairer (Meister der Bossierer) at the Meissen manufactoryExhibited:Meissen, Museum der Meissen Porzellan-Stiftung, Paul Scheurich. Porzellangestalter Zeichner Grafiker, 6 March 2020-21 February 2021This model, together with five others by Scheurich, won the Grand Prix at the Paris World Exhibition of 1937, see Rafael 1995a, no.40.Scheurich modelled the figure in 1929 after spending several weeks in Paris in June and July, where he would have seen the newest fashions. In 1928 womens' dresses started becoming more form-fitting, incorporating asymmetrical hems, swags and ruffles. Scheurich must have been inspired by fashionable women he saw in Paris, modelling the figure in a gauzy dress with deep décolletage and narrow straps, a waterfall of pleats to one side of the skirt and a corsage applied to one shoulder. In her right hand is a large ostrich feather fan, a feature that was very much en vogue at the time. The cover of 'Le Petit Echo de la Mode' from 20 May 1928 shows an illustration that is strikingly similar and could have been the type of thing to inspire him. This style of dress even made its way across the sea and a gown by Chanel was illustrated in the Indianapolis Times on 9 June, 1928 (Noon Edition, p.9), where it was stated: 'A graceful side bow and a shoulder bouquet give charm to a raspberry chiffon evening gown of superb simplicity.'The manufactory made an advance payment for the model in July 1929 of RM 500, though Scheurich was working on several models and so the figure was delivered to the manufactory in March 1930 and the total price of RM 3,800 was paid in the following months. The first figure in porcelain was produced in Autumn 1930 and the first example sold in Spring 1931. Scheurich originally intended the figure to be produced only in white. According to the records of royalty payments, nine figures were sold by the end of 1944.A biscuit figure of the lady with fan was privately commissioned by Annelies von Ribbentrop, for which the chief repairer at the manufactory, Heinrich Hoberg, received his own example. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
