Sydney Smith (1771-1845), a progressive clergyman who was one of the founders of the Edinburgh Review. Smith supported both the education of women and the abolition of slavery. Thomas George Fonnereau (1789-1850) was an English author and artist who inherited a substantial fortune and used the money to realise his ambition of constructing a "bachelor's kennel" with the assistance of his friend the architect Decimus Burton. He was related to the Hibbert family which later became the Holland-Hibbert family.

Tennyson was too shy to read the poem in the Senate House as was customary of the winner, and asked Charles Merivale to take his place.

Utopianism.- Spencer (Herbert) Social Statics: or, the Conditions essential to Human Happiness Specified, and the first of them Developed, first edition, initial advertisement f., half-title, 24pp. publisher's catalogue at end dated March 5th, 1851, some spotting, original cloth, rebacked, preserving original gilt backstrip, corners worn, rubbed, 8vo, 1851.⁂ First edition of Spencer's first book, which 'reflected the strain of utopian radicalism in Spencer's thought inherited from his early background: it denied the legitimacy of private property in land, held out equality of the sexes as a moral ideal, and advocated the training of children by persuasion and rational argument rather than discipline and coercion' (ODNB).

A Romance, 3 vol., first edition in book form, first impression, [one of 1000 copies], half-titles, vol.1 lacking R4 (final leaf, blank apart from imprint), a few marginal marks (mostly to vol.2) but generally very clean, original dark green cloth, both covers with 3-rule border and central publishers' monogram in blind, dark brown endpapers (?recased replacing yellow endpapers), rubbed and lightly stained, labels removed from upper covers, corners bumped, [Purdy p.41], 8vo, Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, & Rivington, 1882.⁂ First published in serial form in the Atlantic Monthly simultaneously in Boston and London. The story of a love affair between an aristocratic woman and much younger man, a lowly astronomer, was not well-received and prefigures Hardy's future problems with his reading public over his "immoral" subject matter.

Churchill (Sir Winston Spencer) My African Journey, first Colonial paperback edition, maps and plates, occasional scattered spotting, front free endpaper with blind-stamp and ink inscription, upper cover mounted on stub, spine creased and chipped with some loss to lettering at foot, creasing to corners, rubbing and surface soiling, 8vo, 1908.⁂ A good example of a rare piece of Churchilliana. Cohen estimates that 903 copies of this edition in the card wrappers (internally identical to the first edition), were printed. Of those copies, due in large part to their delicate nature, as few as half a dozen copies have survived.

Elia (Miriam and Ezra) We go to the gallery, first edition, first issue, signed by the artist, illustrations by Miriam Elia, original pictorial boards, a mint copy, 8vo, ArtQuarters Press, 2014.⁂ The true first issue of this satirical work, written and designed in the style of the classic Ladybird Reading Scheme books. In order to fund publication, Miriam Elia published a handful of pages online which quickly became popular and helped her raise the initial £5,000 required. The first edition ran to 1,000 copies and swiftly sold out, however it also incurred a legal threat from ladybird, forcing her to change the names of the characters as well as the fake imprint for the next edition [see next lot]. Ladybird subsequently published their own satirical reading books which prompted the artist to publish We sue an artist(and then rip off her idea). The original rear panel of the first issue jacket has been salvaged but the rest has been supplied to make a convincing and attractive whole.'I think my novel is about the best American novel ever written.' F.Scott FitzgeraldThe rare dust-jacket, designed by Francis Cugat, played an important part in the composition of the novel itself; Fitzgerald wrote to his publisher 'For Christ's sake don't give anyone that jacket you're saving for me. I've written it into the book.' This is most evident in his description of Daisy Buchanan as the 'girl whose disembodied face floated along the dark cornices and blinding signs'.

Greene (Graham).- Duran (Father Leopoldo Duran, friend of Graham Greene and the inspiration for Monsignor Quixote, 1917-2008) 9 Autograph Letters signed to Peter Duffell, together 23pp., concerning Duffell's and others' adaptations of Greene's work, drinking wine with Greene in Spain, Greene's sadness that Duffell did not adapt any more of his novels "one of the ?worst disappointments he suffered was when he knew the impossibility of placing Monsignor Quixote's film in your hands", Greene's relationship with Catherine Walston and it's inspiration for The End of the Affair, "the real end of the book is a homage to Catherine. She broke her relations with Graham because she was sincerely repented. When she was dying Graham went to see her, but she refused to see him. She taught a serious lesson to Graham" and Greene's conversion to Catholicism due to Vivien, folds, 1999-2001; and an inscribed first edition of Duran's biography of Greene, v.s. (10)

[Greene (Graham) and Ronald Matthews], "Sheila Cousins". To Beg I am Ashamed, first edition, first issue, very light browning to endpapers, original cloth, spine ends and corners a little bumped and darkened, dust-jacket, neatly laid down, price-clipped, repairs and restorations to head and foot, jonits and fore-edges repaired, rubbed and surface soiling, 8vo, 1938.⁂ A rare and important work especially so in the dust-jacket. Ostensibly an autobiography of a London prostitute but in fact written by Ronald Matthews with the assistance of Greene. Routledge were pressured to withdraw the book from sale by the Home Secretary (who in turn had been alerted by The Public Morality Council) and only a handful of copies from this edition reached the market. The book was subsequently published the same year in Paris and New York, but the true first edition remains an elusive book.

Painted binding.- Norman (Da Loria, artist).- [Sharp (William)], "Fiona Macleod". From the Hills of Dream: Threnodies, Songs and Later Poems, first edition, ink inscription on front free endpaper, bound in vellum, hand-painted in green, black and gold by Da Loria Norman, upper cover incorporating central panel of title within swirls & leaves and outer border of leaves & stars, signed below panel, lower cover with central floral device and spirals & trailing tendrils in one corner, spine lettered with title & author's name and decorated with leaves, stars & a dove, g.e., very slightly soiled and light wear to the gilding and painting, 8vo, 1907.⁂ Attractive binding in Art Nouveau style but appropriately showing the influence of Celtic design for the work by the Scottish poet, William Sharp. Da Loria Norman, born Belle Elkin Mitchell in Kansas in 1872 but raised in England, corresponded with Sharp after the break-up of her abusive marriage and found solace in his poetry, inspiring her to illuminate his work. Self-taught through studying medieval manuscripts in the British Museum she illuminated and decorated several bindings on commission, many for Rivière; her work was much admired by Walter Crane and other artists of the time.

Dressmaking.- [?Wilson (Maria)] The Workwoman's Guide, containing Instructions to the Inexperienced in Cutting Out and Completing those articles of Wearing Apparel..., first edition, engraved frontispiece and 24 plates, light stain to frontispiece and title, old ink inscription to front free endpaper, contemporary half calf, rubbed, 4to, London and Birmingham, 1838.⁂ Rare and important work on making baby-clothes, baby-linen, cot covers, children's & adults' clothes, bonnets, hats etc., needlework, upholstery, cleaning clothes, knitting and straw-plaiting. The frontispiece depicts young girls in a needlework class and the plates consist mostly of patterns. Only 4 copies on COPAC (BL, Birmingham, Cambridge & Oxford; the National Art Library at the V & A holds only the second edition of 1840); 2 copies only traced at auction (2009 & 1978).

Fortification.- Lorini (Buonaiuto) Le Fortificationi, 2 parts in 1, titles with large woodcut device of cannon, full-page engraved portrait of the author by W.Kilian, woodcut head- & tail-pieces, initials and diagrams at beginning, 171 woodcut illustrations of which 7 double-page and 15 full-page, no pp.57-60 but complete, title repaired, washed and laid down and slightly trimmed, X1 tear repaired recto, within woodcut verso, but without loss, marginal water-staining, some browning, mostly light, occasional spotting, modern vellum over boards, [Berlin Kat. 3519; Breman 165; Cockle 791, note], folio, Venice, Francesco Rampazetto, 1609.'⁂ The second, last, and best edition of Lorini's work, and the first edition to contain Book VI. The new book 'Delle fortificationi libro sesto, dove si tratta della difesa delle fortezze' deals principally with sieges, addressing practical problems, like how to repair breached walls, make temporary or portable defences, make the artillery mobile and protect the artillerist, all of which was based on the author's experience in the field. This edition also contains 18 new chapters to the earlier books, with 27 new woodcuts.

Arctic.- M'Dougall (George F.) The Eventful Voyage of H.M. Discovery Ship "Resolute" to the Arctic Regions in search of Sir John Franklin..., first edition, half-title, folding engraved map with partial hand-colouring and routes supplied in red and blue, 8 tinted lithographed plates, some finished by hand with colouring of flags, wood-engraved illustrations, old ink inscription "Ducie Oct. 1903" at head of title, some spotting, modern book-label of Charles Benson, later half morocco, spine gilt, t.e.g., spine a little faded, joints very slightly rubbed, [Sabin 43183], 8vo, 1857. ⁂ The Resolute set out as part of Belcher's relief expedition in 1850 but became stuck in the ice and was abandoned in May 1854. It was found by a American whaler, bought by the U.S. government and returned to Britain where it was presented to Queen Victoria. A desk was later built using its timbers and presented to the President of the United States in thanks; it is now situated in the Oval Office in the White House where it has been used by most of the intervening Presidents.
