Derham, William THE ARTIFICIAL Clock-maker. A Treatise of Watch, and Clock-work... First edition printed for James Knapton 'at the Crown in St Pauls Church-yard', London 1696, with folding woodcut plate of musical notation and chimes (loss to edge margin), woodcut diagrams and Addenda leaf at end, 8vo in 4s, contemporary tooled calf, (title with ink signature Jacob Mefsing, some soiling and staining). A rare first edition of the first comprehensive and scientific treatment of the art of horology, with far greater detail on clock and watch movement and construction than given by John Smith in his Horological Dialogues of 1675. Derham also produced the earliest, reasonably accurate estimate of the speed of sound. In his preface to the present work he admits to having had help 'in the History of the Modern Inventions' from Hooke and Tompion. See Baillie, G.H. CLOCKS AND WATCHES, An Historical Bibliography page 123.

Lot 61

A lacquered brass descending ball timepieceDent, London, circa 1970The circular three-pillar gilt brass movement with inverted platform lever escapement driven by the weight of the timepiece causing flat high-tensile steel line to unwind from an internal pulley wheel as the timepiece descends, the backplate engraved SER. No. 030, the exterior with rotating annular silver Roman numeral chapter ring reading against a hand cast in the form of a mermaid holding a staff, the base with short inverted pendant spire finial and the top with pierced crown surmount issuing the suspension line terminating with a hook to allow hanging from a shaped brass bracket fitted to a mahogany panel applied with plaque engraved Dent, London to lower margin, the ball 11.8cm (4.625ins) diameter; the wall panel 80cm (31.5ins) high. The highly renowned clock and watch making business Dent was established by the talented horologist Edward John Dent, who at the age of 17, transferred his apprenticeship from the trade of tallow chandler to watchmaking under the charge of Edward Gaudin in 1807. By 1817 he had become well known as a watch and clockmaker receiving commissions from the Admiralty for a 'Standard Astronomical Clock' and pocket chronometers for the Colonial Office Africa Expedition. In 1830 Dent went into partnership with the renowned watch and chronometer maker John Roger Arnold which continued until 1840 when he left and set up business alone as E.J. Dent at 82 Strand, London, primarily making marine chronometers, watches and precision clocks. In 1843 the firm expanded taking on a second premises at 33 Cockspur Street, with the Strand premises moving down the road to number 61 by 1851. In 1852 Edward Dent successfully tendered to make the 'great clock' to be housed in Stephen's tower at the New Palace of Westminster. The clock was completed by 1859, apparently at a financial loss to the firm, however it ensured that Dent became a household name synonymous with fine clockmaking. Unfortunately Edward John Dent did not live to see the installation of the 'great clock' as he died in 1853. He was succeeded by his stepson Frederick Rippon Dent, who, in partnership with his brother Richard, continued to expand the business. By 1862 the firm had added 34 Cockspur Street and 34 & 35 Royal Exchange to their list of addresses and, although having seen natural passage of ownership over the intervening years, the business still continues to trade today as Dent & Co. Descending ball timepieces were first devised during the Renaissance period with surviving examples being extremely rare, however a relatively late model by J. Schlemmer of Schleswig was offered at Sotheby's New York MASTERPIECES FROM THE TIME MUSEUM, PART TWO June 19th 2002 (lot 103). The current example was devised by Dent in the early 1970's as a 'revival' piece, and was produced as a limited edition (of probably 500 examples) alongside Dent's other revival of a Renaissance timepiece, the' incline plane clock'.

bronze, signed and inscribed in the cast M. A. SUZOR-COTE'/ L'ESSOUCHEUR, stamped foundry mark and edition no. to foot rim ROMAN BRONZE WORK NY/ #17, bears gallery label for W. Scott & Sons to the underside, inscribed W. SCOTT & SONS/ No. O/S - 749/ PROPERTY OF SUZOR-COTÉ RCA/ "THE GRUBBER"/ PRICE $385.00(53.3cm wide, 40.6cm high)Provenance: Presented as a gift to Alfred James Towle Taylor, circa 1935-40 and by family descentNote: After studying at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Suzor-Côté returned to his native Canada and sought to capture the mesmerising mountain landscapes of his homeland. Here, he quickly gained critical acclaim as an artist, breaking away from the rigid academic tradition of studio painting, in favour of Canada's iconic and breath-taking scenery. Heavily influenced by French Impressionism, his works demonstrate a fascination with colour theory and the play of light on snowy mountain tops and icy lakes. In 1907, Suzor-Côté began to develop his talents in sculpting, and by 1919 he had excelled in the medium. His works in bronze are quite rare, as he is thought to have only produced around fifty in his career. As with his painterly approach, the influence of Impressionism remained dominant throughout his experimentation with sculpture. In L’Essoucher, idealised Classical subjects have been abandoned for character studies of rural settlers, representing the essence of country life in Canada. Here, one is immediately drawn to the figure’s body language: his back growing tired and beginning to hunch over; his hands, larger than life, grip onto his tools as his body strains with the hard manual labour he must undertake. Equally, there is a clear attempt to depart from the academic sculptures of his contemporaries, which strive for smooth perfection and beauty. In the present example, Suzor-Côté has sculpted a richly textured surface that is both evocative and captivating. The eye is carried across every fold and crevice, drawing our attention to the physicality of the labourer's task at hand. L’Essoucher typifies Suzor-Côté’s move away from idealism, towards more authentic subjects which celebrate the individual and, above all, captures the essence of rural Canadian life which he loved and cherished.Note: Founded in 1859 as a framing workshop, William Scott and Sons became an important gallery and art dealer in Montreal in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The firm imported work by British and French painters, and in 1892 became the first gallery in Canada to show work by the French Impressionists. The gallery mainly sold Barbizon School paintings but from 1901 was the dealer for M.A. Suzor-Cote as well as handling the work of Cornelius Krieghoff.

1995 Mercedes-Benz SL500 Mille Miglia Transmission: automaticMileage:55200These days, Mercedes has not released too many limited edition models outside of their in house tuning arm, AMG. Before the days of AMG proliferation, Mercedes would release a special edition model from time to time, such as this 1995 SL500 Mille Miglia. Built to commemorate Stirling Moss’s win of the historic 1955 Mille Miglia road race. This R129, available as an SL320 or SL500, was available only in brilliant Silver Metallic, equipped with Evo II six-spoke polished alloys and a red and black leather interior complemented by carbon fibre trim. The side bumper grilles were also given a rather unique chequered flag treatment that, upon close inspection, is a clever collection of chrome squares. This right hand drive example has covered a mere 55,200 miles from new and is presented in absolutely fantastic overall condition. Boasting just one former keeper, it was supplied by Cruickshank Mercedes of Bristol to its first owner in September 1995 who enjoyed the car for 19 years. It was then sold to the second owner by Mercedes-Benz Bristol as a used approved car in 2014. Options fitted to the vehicle are auto-dimming interior and exterior mirrors, automatic air conditioning, electric/heated front seats, rear seats with seat belts and headlamp cleaning system. The car is described by the vendor as ‘in excellent all-round condition with everything working and it drives as it should’. It comes with a lovely history file along with documentation of the Mille Miglia race, the stamped service book, a file of invoices and roof stand. The last service was only 350 miles ago and the current MoT test certificate is valid until March 2022 with all previous advisories having been attended to. With low mileage and so few owners, this car is surely one to put away for the future with R129 prices on the rise.Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. Accordingly, buyers are on notice that each vehicle is offered ‘as is/as seen’ subject to the Terms and Conditions for the auction. Buyers are advised to inspect the vehicle in person or use a professional to carry out this service. Historics will not entertain disputes over descriptions.

Lot 163

2002 Renault Avantime Privilege Transmission: automaticMileage:108200So sensational was the public and motoring press reaction in 1998 at the Paris Salon unveiling of their concept design gran-turismo super-MPV, Renault poured a staggering 1.4bn francs (€285m) into development of the world’s first MPV coupé. Remarkably, true to the original design, the 'Avantime', built by Matra, was a genuine mould-breaker that offered a luxurious cabin. Add to this an option to specify the highly capable three litre, V6 engine, the Avantime really delivered a truly exciting motoring experience.First registered to Renault UK Ltd., each 'prestige' dealership was allocated a showcase Avantime. HY02 XZN is 'Limited Edition' car Number 55. Specified as a top-of-the-range, three litre, V6 in 'Nocturn' metallic purple beneath silver roof-rails with black leather and carpets. Mr. Black has been the sole private registered keeper of this car from new, with annual usage reducing each year until the car was placed into storage for four years. Some light recommissioning took place last Summer and a fresh MoT test issued last September. The car is reported to present magnificently and drives smoothly. Historics are proud to present such a desirable Avantime, complete with both original keys, leather owner's zipper wallet, original dealer number plates (retained with the history file), Limited Edition Renault UK presentation book, box, plaque and certificate. With only 452 examples having been sold in righthand drive in the UK, such fine examples are becoming increasingly difficult to find, certainly one with just one recorded owner.Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. Accordingly, buyers are on notice that each vehicle is offered ‘as is/as seen’ subject to the Terms and Conditions for the auction. Buyers are advised to inspect the vehicle in person or use a professional to carry out this service. Historics will not entertain disputes over descriptions.

Lot 176

1970 Ford Escort Mk. I Twin Cam Ex-Hannu Mikkola Transmission: manualMileage:78240The Mk. I Ford Escort was introduced in Ireland and the UK at the end of 1967, making its show debut at the Brussels Motor Show in January 1968. It replaced the successful, long-running Ford Anglia. The front suspension and steering gear were differently configured, and the brakes were fitted with dual hydraulic circuits; also the wheels fitted on the Genk-built Escorts had wider rims. At the beginning of 1970, continental European production transferred to a new plant on the edge of Saarlouis, West Germany. They were hailed as an immediate success both domestically on the roads and for motor sport, particularly rallying. A higher performance version for rallies and racing was available, the Escort Twin Cam, which was built for Group 2 international rallying. It had an engine with a Lotus-made eight-valve twin camshaft head fitted to the 1.5 litre non-crossflow block, which had a bigger bore than usual to give a capacity of 1,558cc. This engine had originally been developed for the Lotus Elan. The Mk. I Escorts were incredibly successful and they eventually went on to become one of the most successful rally cars of all time. This rare and historically interesting ex-Ford Works rally car was driven in period by Hannu Mikkola at the Rally of Cyprus in October 1970 and also in period by the British rally star Roger Clark although he didn’t compete in the car (as pictured in the book ‘The Works Escorts’ Second Edition by Graham Robson). The car was first registered in February 1970 and was sold (shown in a used vehicle brochure) as an ex-Works car on 30th June 1972. The car still has the same registration from new which is recorded in its original buff logbook and again confirmed in the present logbook. This car is depicted in various magazines and Works Escort books being rallied by the sporting luminaries mentioned and has been in storage for most of its latter-day life, forming part of a small private collection presently. This car is known by the AVO Club who inspected and valued it in 2011 confirming its provenance. A wonderful piece of motorsport history not to be missed.Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. Accordingly, buyers are on notice that each vehicle is offered ‘as is/as seen’ subject to the Terms and Conditions for the auction. Buyers are advised to inspect the vehicle in person or use a professional to carry out this service. Historics will not entertain disputes over descriptions.

1988 Jaguar XJRS Le Mans Coupé Transmission: automaticMileage:22944The Jaguar XJS design, codenamed XJ27, started around 1965 with the first production car being sold in 1975. It was primarily designed by Malcolm Sayer with input and control from Sir William Lyons. Although the public assumed the Jaguar XJS was a successor to the very popular E-Type it was in fact intended to be very different. It would be comfortable and luxurious, less a sports car than a sports tourer. This allowed it to use the same suspension layout as the recently introduced and supremely cosseting Jaguar XJ6. Externally the Jaguar XJS is most noticeable for its ‘flying buttresses’, sweeping from the top of the rear roofline down to the rear of the wings. It also gave the quite large Jaguar XJS an excellent drag coefficient, better than the E-Type and allowing the XJS easily to attain over 150mphThis stunning, limited edition, XJRS was originally registered on 25th August 1988 and is a bespoke model produced by JaguarSport and Tom Walkinshaw Racing (TWR) Group to commemorate the marques triumph at Le Mans in 1988. Only 100 examples were built, this is number 22 and appears to be in original condition. Finished in Tungsten metallic with a cream Connolly leather interior, a burr walnut dashboard and sitting on the correct 15” JaguarSport alloy wheels. Standard equipment on these luxurious grand tourers includes electric seats with lumbar support, air conditioning and cruise control. This example is fitted with an original trip computer and Jaguar radio system. This extremely low mileage example is still sporting the original coachlines bearing the 1988 race winning XJR-9, this is a great indication of originality. The car is supplied with a V5C registration document showing only one previous keeper and an MoT test certificate valid until July 2021.The car has benefitted from a recent service and the rebuilding of the brake calipers. Given the mileage, condition and low ownership, this is a tremendous opportunity to purchase such a rare and well-preserved piece of Jaguar and TWR motoring history.Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. Accordingly, buyers are on notice that each vehicle is offered ‘as is/as seen’ subject to the Terms and Conditions for the auction. Buyers are advised to inspect the vehicle in person or use a professional to carry out this service. Historics will not entertain disputes over descriptions.

The Giro is a UCI World Tour event, which means that the teams that compete in the race are mostly UCI WorldTeams, with some additional teams invited as 'wild cards'.
