Tulp was professor of anatomy at Amsterdam, known for Tulp's valve (the ileocecal valve) and for his appearance in Rembrandt's painting The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp of 1632. The illustrations include one of Tulp's valve and another of an "orang-utang", actually a chimpanzee.

Although he may have travelled in Turkey, the reviewer believed that Spencer had used, without acknowledging, a great deal of material from a work on Circassia by Taitbout de Marigny ..."
