UTAGAWA HIROSHIGE (1797 - 1858): ISE-EBI AND SHIBA-EBIBy Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 - 1858), signed Hiroshige ga Japan, 19th century Color woodblock print on paper. Horizontal Oban. Lobster (Ise ebi) and prawn (shiba ebi), from the series Uozukushi (Every Variety of Fish). Published by Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudô). Censor's seal: kiwame. Inscriptions: poems by Shimotsuke Edozaki Ryokujuen Motoari (Ryokujuen Motoari from Edozaki in Shimotsuke Province) and Nen'an Machikado. Inscribed to the backside. Mounted at the upper margin to a passepartout. Condition: Slightly faded colors, and good impression. With browning and staining as well as few wormholes. The upper margin with tears. Provenance: German private collection. Dimensions: Image size 24.5 x 37.5 cm, Size incl. passepartout 38.5 x 52.5 cmThe series initially appeared as a privately printed kyōka poetry album in the orihon format, containing ten illustrated sheets and four text-only sheets. The blocks were later reused for commercial prints, with added publisher's marks, censor's kiwame seals, and occasionally different poems. Additional designs, including one with a trout, were included in the commercial series. Another publisher later added nine more designs. For a complete reproduction and detailed discussion of the first edition, consult Mann 2021, pages 290-311. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 - 1858) Utagawa Hiroshige (also referred to as Ando Hiroshige) is recognized as one of the last great masters of the ukiyo-e ('pictures of the floating world') woodblock printing tradition. His style can be characterized in the genre of landscape print, innovated by his early contemporary Hokusai (1760-1849). Hiroshige can be attributed to having created over 5,000 prints of everyday life and landscape in Edo-period Japan. Inspired by Katsushika Hokusai's popular Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, Hiroshige took a softer, less formal approach with his Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido (1833-34), completed after a trip he made between Edo and Kyoto, which is acclaimed to be perhaps his finest achievement. He made numerous other journeys within Japan and issued a series of such prints, expressing in great detail the poetic sensibility inherent in the climate and topography of Japan and its people. Hiroshige's prolific output was somewhat due to his being paid very little per series. Still, this did not deter him, as he receded to Buddhist monkhood in 1856 to complete his brilliant and lasting One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (1856-58). He died in 1858, 10 years before Monet, Van Gogh, and a lot of Impressionist painters became eager collectors of Japanese art.Literature comparison: A near identical print is in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number JP3597. Another is in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, accession number 21.9605.

UTAGAWA HIROSHIGE (1797 - 1858): SHONO DRIVING RAINBy Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 - 1858), Signed Hiroshige ga Japan, originally issued 1834 - 19th century edition Color woodblock print on paper. No. 46 from the series Fifty-three Stations of the Tôkaidô Road (Tôkaidô gojûsan tsugi no uchi), also known as the First Tôkaidô or Great Tôkaidô. Published by Takenouchi Magohachi (Hoeidô). Censor's seal: kiwame. Condition: Good condition, good impression, colors somewhat faded, and browning. Provenance: German private collection. Dimensions: Image size 35.5 x 38.5 cm, Size incl. passepartout 36 x 48.5 cmLiterature comparison: A near identical but earlier print, is in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 11.26227. Another is in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, accession number 11.25063. Auction result comparison: Compare to a near identical bur earlier print at Christie´s New York, in Japanese and Korean Art on 22 September 2020, lot 128, sold for USD 30,000.Sudden Shower at Shōno is one of the best-known scenes from Hiroshige's series. It showcases his skill in capturing the intensity of a rainstorm, with palanquin bearers and villagers rushing through the rain. The design is purely imaginative, as Shōno doesn't match the depicted scenery. The umbrella bears inscriptions related to the publisher and series titles. A first-edition hardback copy of the biography James Dean: The Mutant King (Straight Arrow Books, 1974) by David Dalton that was personally owned by Dennis Hopper. The book is vividly written and helped reignite the Dean cult and cement his reputation as a defining figure of the counterculture. Hopper starred alongside Dean in two films Rebel Without a Cause (Warner Brothers, 1955) and Giant (Warner Brothers, 1956) and was interviewed for Dalton's book. Hopper provided a quote that has often been used to sum up Dean's appeal ever since: "...in this hand, I'm holding Marlon Brando saying 'Fuck you!' and in the other hand saying 'Please forgive me,' is Mongromery Clift...And somewhere in between is James Dean."Together with a paperback copy of John Steinbeck's East of Eden (Bantam, 1962), which provided the source material for Dean's first major film role.  6.5 x 9.5 inches, largestPROVENANCE Property from the Life and Career of Dennis Hopper

Lot 1097

A limited edition Ed Ruscha Twentysix Gasoline Stations ground-breaking artist book (Cunningham Press / National Excelsior Press, 1962) inscribed to Dennis Hopper in ink by Ruscha. The book contains the artist's iconic gasoline station photographs, with the inscription reading: "Hello / Dennis / Ed / Ruscha / 1963." This is copy number 35 of 400.American Pop artist Ruscha was initially fascinated by cartooning as a young boy in Nebraska. He went on to study visual art at the Couinard Art Institute (now CalArts) in Southern California with abstract expressionist Emerson Woelffer and others. He then worked doing layouts at an advertising agency in the early 1960s, during which time he became known around Los Angeles for his collages, paintings, and photography.Twentysix Gasoline Stations was Ruscha’s first artist book and a prominent early influence on the genre’s development and artist’s book culture in general (some might argue it was the first modern artist book). The small volume contains 26 banal photographs of gas stations, images indelibly linked with his sensibility as an artist. It was via Ruscha's association with the Ferus Gallery that he came into contact with Hopper, the pair quickly forming a friendship that spanned many forms of creation and artistic exchange. Hopper would take Ruscha’s portrait in 1964 and Ruscha would hang a painting of the word “if” made by Hopper in his studio and make his first sale of art to him as well (a large painting of a Standard gas station and one of his most characteristic images). Ruscha served as a pallbearer at Hopper’s funeral in 2010.Writing on the Royal Academy of Arts blog in 2014, Ruscha said of Hopper: “I would rarely see Dennis without his favourite camera, a 35mm Nikon. He would point it in almost any direction and find a suitable Dennis Hopper subject. So his focus was on anything and everything of interest. Through his eyes I see a virtual dictionary of the city of Los Angeles. He approached his photographs as a sort of wandering of the soul, followed by the familiar ka-chunk of the Nikon.”5.5 x 7.5 inchesPROVENANCE Property from the Life and Career of Dennis Hopper

Edgar and Monica", 79 x 99mm, small closed tear lower margin (approx. 12mm, not affecting image). (Meyrick No.211)Edgar Holloway was born in Yorkshire in 1914. Largely self-taught, Holloway learned to etch from books and manuals and was influenced by the self-portrait etchings of Rembrandt, Whistler and Augustus John. Like John, he used self-portraiture as a means of exploring different aspects of his personality, sometimes adopting an alternative persona. Encouraged by Campbell Dodgson and Muirhead Bone, Holloway had his first one-man show in London at the early age of 17. Portraits won particular acclaim and TS Eliot, Stephen Spender and Herbert Read were among the many who sat for the artist. Whilst in Wales in 1943 he visited the Gill family and met Daisy Hawkins, who had left her Ditchling home to work for them. They married six weeks later. When short of work in the post war period he turned his skills to drawing letters for a sign. This became the first of many jobs of lettering and sign writing that he continued throughout his working life. In 1948 he visited Ditchling and settled in the following year. He began to study wood-engraving with Philip Hagreen and by 1951 had joined the Guild. Throughout his life he worked as a designer for publishers and a cartographer as well as continuing to etch and work in watercolour, the village itself and the Guild buildings, providing his subject matter.

Omega Workshops; Arthur Clutton-Brock & Roald Kristian (ill.): 'Simpson's Choice: An Essay on the Future Life', London, Omega Workshops Ltd., 1915, 1st edition, limited to 500 copies only, 3 full-page wood-engraved illustrations, numerous head and tail-pieces, and decorative opening initials by Roald Kristian as called for, printed under the direction of J.H. Mason, 4to, original cloth backed pictorial paper covered boards. The Omega Workshops was a design enterprise founded by members of the Bloomsbury Group in July 1913, with the intention of providing graphic expression to the essence of the Bloomsbury ethos. The Workshops was also closely associated with the Hogarth Press, with Roger Fry, Duncan Grant, and Vanessa Bell as its directors. Wyndham Lewis was also initially part of the operation, and whilst Fry was keen to encourage a Post-Impressionist influence in designs produced for Omega, Cubist and Fauvist influences are also apparent, particularly in many of the textile designs. Unfortunately Omega Workshop was short-lived and closed down in 1919, 'Simpson's Choice' was the first work to be published at the Omega Workshop, and was to be one of only four books completed by the Press.
