BURNS (ROBERT)Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect, second (first Edinburgh) edition, with 'skinking' at p.263, and 'Boxburgh' rather than 'Roxburgh' in the list of subscribers AUTOGRAPH ADDRESS PANEL IN THE HAND OF ROBERT BURNS, TO GEORGE THOMSON tipped onto stub between title and dedication leaf, half-title, engraved portrait by I. Beugo after A. Nasmyth, calf gilt by Riviere (with stamp on front free endpaper), g.e., rebacked retaining original spine elaborately tooled in 6 compartments (4 with thistle motif; 2 with morocco lettering labels), slightly rubbed at extremities [Egers 2; Rothschild 556], 8vo, Edinburgh, for the Author, by W. Creech, 1787Footnotes:Includes a manuscript address leaf written by Burns to 'Mr. George Thomson, Trustees Office, Edin.' and 'Robin Adair' vertically on fold. It is annotated ('ans.d'), and with numeral 'No. 20' (struck through in ink) in a different hand. On the flaps are stamped 'Au[gust] 14' in red ink, and 'Dumfries' in black. George Thomson (1757–1851) was a friend of Burns, Clerk to the Board of Trustees for Encouragement of Art and Manufacture in Scotland, and edited A Select Collection of Original Scottish Airs, the first volume (1793) of which included twenty-five poems by Burns himself. Burns and Thompson were regular correspondents. It is probable that our envelope would have enclosed a version of one the poems that Burns set to the tune of 'Robin Adair' and sent to Thompson for comment. In August 1793 he sent two - 'Had I a Cave', and ' Phyllis the Fair', both of which met with the recipient's approval. For another address panel addressed by Burns to Thompson see the Burns Scotland website. Provenance: William F. Gable (1856-1921, American collector), bookplate. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

CARLYLE (THOMAS)Autograph Preface to the English edition of Essays by R.W. Emerson, signed and dated ('T. Carlyle/ London 11th August 1841'), a fair copy for publication, titled 'Preface by the English Editor', beginning 'To the great reading public entering Mr Fraser's and other shops in quest of daily provender, it may be as well to state, on the very threshold, that this little Reprint of an American Book of Essays is in no wise the thing suited for them...', with additional note at foot 'N.B. [The foregoing words were written as preface to the first English Edition of the Essays i-xii... the following as Notice to the first English Edition of the Essays xiii-xx and 'New-England Reformers']', with publisher's marks in blue crayon, 6 pages, on thin paper, 8vo (160 x 110mm.), 11 August 1841; sewn together with the autograph 'Notice', signed and dated ('T. Carlyle. London 25th October 1844'), beginning 'Here is a new volume of Essays by Emerson; concerning which I am to certify that this English Edition of them seems to be correctly printed...', one page on laid paper, light dust-staining at edges, 8vo (176 x 110mm.), 25 October 1844; tipped into a copy of volume 2 of Emerson's Works, ownership inscription 'J.Russell' on front paste-down and presentation inscription on flyleaf ''Jack'./ From his mother./ December 1 1883', original red cloth, binding worn, spine partly detached, 8vo, London, Macmillan & Co., 1883Footnotes:'I WILL WISH THE BRAVE EMERSON A FAIR WELCOME AMONG US AGAIN; AND LEAVE HIM TO SPEAK WITH HIS OLD FRIENDS, AND TO MAKE NEW': Carlyle's autograph Preface and Notice to the English editions of Emerson's Essays.Emerson much admired Carlyle's essays on German literature and sought out the Carlyles at their Dumfriesshire home in August 1833 on his 1832-3 tour of Europe, with letters of introduction from John Stuart Mill and Gustave d'Eichthal. They struck up a firm, if somewhat volatile friendship, and their correspondence from 14 May 1834 to 20 June 1873 is regarded as a classic of nineteenth century literature. Carlyle wrote prefaces for the English edition of Emerson's two volumes of essays, published in London in 1841 and 1844 but these were not reprinted in most later editions. In a letter to Emerson, Carlyle notes the writing of the Preface in June 1841 at the behest of his own publisher James Fraser: '...the risk is all his, the origin of it was with him... 'write you a Preface,' said he, 'and I will reprint it'; - to which, after due delay and meditation, I consented...' (Sommer, p.134). Carlyle wrote out the Preface, as seen here, and proofread the sheets as they came from the printer. Edison, in turn, 'showed himself glad that his 'poor little arid book' would 'be printed in London, and graced with a preface from the man of men...' (Sommer, p.135). A 'legal grey area' (Sommer, p.132) that affected the copyrighting of American literature abroad had led to pirate copies and unauthorised editions, necessitating the writing of the subsequent 'Notice', in which Carlyle assures the reading public that '...this English edition... seems to be correctly printed... the English publisher is one appointed by the Author himself...'. For a comprehensive discussion of the publication history of the English editions and the professional relationship between Carlyle and Emerson see Dr Tim Sommer's Carlyle, Emerson and the Transatlantic Uses of Authority, Edinburgh, 2021, particularly Chapter 4 (pp.132-160).This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
