Andy Warhol (1928-1987)Queen Elizabeth II, from Reigning Queens (see Feldman & Schellmann IIB.334-337) Unique screenprint in colours, 1985, on Lenox Museum Board, signed and numbered TP 26/30 in pencil, one of 30 colour variant trial proofs aside from the edition of 40 (there were also 10 artist's proofs), printed by Rupert Jasen Smith, New York, with their blindstamp, published by George C.P. Mulder, Amsterdam, the full sheet, in overall very good condition, the colours strong and vibrant, framedSheet 1001 x 799mm. (39 3/8 x 31 1/2in.)Footnotes:ProvenanceBelgravia Gallery, London (with their label).Sotheby's, Old Master, Modern & Contemporary Prints, London, 19 March 2013, Lot 177.Acquired from the above sale by the current owner. In 1985 Warhol produced his largest portfolio Reigning Queens, containing screenprint portraits of the four ruling female monarchs of the day: Queen Elizabeth II, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and Queen Ntombi Twala of Swaziland. The image of Queen Elizabeth II was based on a photograph taken by Peter Grugeon at Windsor Castle on 2 April 1975 and released to celebrate Her Majesty's Silver Jubilee in 1977. Warhol was fascinated by fame and celebrity. He was the first artist to really comprehend the appeal of celebrity culture and how to harness this appeal to his advantage by producing iconic images of the famous and the glamorous which had an immediate impact and charisma. Warhol's decision to produce an image of the monarch took this up a level. A royal likeness stood apart from other portraits as the ultimate image of fame, celebrity and glamour and was treated with a certain reverence. On the other hand, Warhol was also well aware that this image would be instantly recognizable and attractive to collectors, thereby increasing his own fame by association, notably quoting 'I want to be as famous as The Queen of England'.Having worked as a commercial illustrator, Warhol understood how to present an image to attract attention. He favoured the screenprint process, which produced a precise defined image with hard edges and flat areas of colour, to achieve maximum impact for his radical and glamorous Pop art portraits. The use of this method is pertinent for the Queen as the most depicted woman in the world and indeed the bust length format and vibrant colours call to mind another iconic item of mass production, the postage stamp.Warhol has pared down the original image, removing some of the finer detail which gives character to the face, to leave an inscrutable façade. He has highlighted outlines on areas such as the crown and sash with the Royal Family orders, thus focussing the viewer's attention on the image of Her Majesty as a symbol of royal power; the public face and figurehead of the Royal House of Windsor. In this year of the Platinum Jubilee, we are delighted to be offering a unique version of this screenprint outside the standard edition, which can be regarded as truly iconic, both in subject and within the Warhol repertoire. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Giorgio Morandi (1890-1964)Natura morta con il panneggio a sinistra (Vitali 31; Cordaro p.35) Etching, 1927, on wove paper, the second, final state, signed, dated and numbered 32/40 in pencil, with wide margins, in good condition, framedPlate 246 x 350mm. (9 3/4 x 13 3/4in.); Sheet 330 x 435mm. (13 x 17 1/8in.)Footnotes:ProvenancePrivate Collection, Italy (acquired circa 1960-1970)Thence by descent from the above to the present ownerOne of Morandi's finest etched works, Natura morta con il panneggio a sinistra, was produced in 1927 and reproduces the subject painted by the artist twice that same year (Vitali 1977, cat. 115-116). Morandi generally worked directly from his subjects and etched everything on a plate at one time. So there are a few states of his prints. Only two states were made of this subject, with a limited edition of forty impressions and some artist's proofs. The present impression is part of the second state, in which Morandi added oblique signs on the bottom left of the neck of the central bottle. His methodical use of the etched line to create shapes, volume and density of his marks, by hatching and cross-hatching alone without a descriptive outline, is clearly inspired by the great old master etchers Rembrandt and Goya, whom he profoundly admired.Natura morta con il panneggio a sinistra is one of his most accomplished large compositions of his celebrated still-lifes etchings. The gradual intensity of the etched line shaded surfaces is contrasted with areas completely untouched by the needle, creating a highly atmospheric chiaroscuro effect which Morandi named bianco assoluto (absolute white).Giorgio Morandi is considered the most outstanding Italian printmaker of the twentieth century. Unlike many other artists, his practice as a printmaker was not just a supplement to painting or an additional means of income. Etching had played a significant part of his artistic practice since the beginning of his career. He made his first etching in 1912, having taught himself the technique by reading a treatise of 1660 by another Bolognese artist Odoardo Fialetti. Morandi made very few prints until the 1920s, and only a total of 138 in all. Eighty of his prints were made in the short period between 1927-1933 and only a small number after the Second World War.Morandi held the Chair in Printmaking at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna from 1930 until 1956.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * AR* VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.AR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

He was awarded the Association’s bronze medal in 1923 and the silver in 1928. He was awarded the R.S.P.C.A. Life Saving Medal in Silver for the rescue of two horses in 1922. An account of the rescue is recorded in the May 1923 edition of The Animal World: ‘The Mayor of Chelmsford, Alderman Fred Spalding, J.P., recently presented the Society’s Silver Medal to Superintendent Murkin, of the Chelmsford Fire Brigade and the bronze medal to Mr Frederick Thomas Hills, for their brave action in rescuing horses from a fire. Superintendent Murkin went into a stable where he had been told there were two horses. The smoke and heat drove him back at first, but he went to the fire hose, saturated a handkerchief and put it round his mouth and went in again, “And,” said the Mayor, “I am very pleased to say he brought out both those horses.” In handing Superintendent Murkin the medal the Mayor said:- “It will be the means of reminding you of a noble deed and that you have the respect of your fellow townsmen, especially those who love animals.” In presenting the bronze medal to Mr Hills, the Mayor said that on the night of the fire he rushed to the stables and managed to get out three horses. One animal was down and they could not get it up. After having a drink of water Hills went back in again and succeeded in bringing out the horse’. Murkin retired from the Chelmsford Fire Brigade with the rank of Superintendent, and died in Chelmsford on 13 December 1950. Sold with photocopied Chelmsford Fire Brigade photographs and other copied research.

Artist: Andy Warhol (American, 1928 - 1987). Title: "Andy Warhol and His Plastic Inevitable [1st printing] [announcement/oversize postcard]". Medium: Color lithograph. Date: Composed 1967. Dimensions: Overall size: 8 x 5 in. (203 x 127 mm).Lot Note(s): Signed by Warhol in black marker, lower right. Edition unknown, presumed small. Light cream wove paper. Full margins. Fine impression. Fine condition. Comment(s): Scarce, and rare signed by Warhol. Designed by Wes Wilson. The postcard for the famous event, unlike the poster with the same image, was authorized by Bill Graham and first printed early in 1967 along with the second printing of the poster. The colors of the card match the colors of the first and second printings of the poster. The card was printed by the West Coast Lithograph Co., San Francisco (their imprint verso), who also printed the second printing of the poster. The postcard was subsequently reprinted by Wes Wilson in 1993. Since the poster had a total of three printings, and concert postcards are generally issued before the event, the 1967 printing of the postcard is often erroneously referred to as a second printing, when in fact it was the first. The first printing can be differentiated from the second by the colors ("Andy Warhol and His Plastic Inevitable" is white in the first, pink in the second; orange lettering in the first vs. red/orange in the second); no small letters under the image lower left in the first vs. the addition of "© 1966 Wes Wilson BG 8-3/PS 33" in the second, the change in the small letters lower right from "Wes Wilson 661-5362" in the first to "Wes Wilson '66" in the second, the deletion on the verso of the printer's information on the second printing, the smaller size (8 x 5 on the first, 7 x 5 on the second), and the paper color (pale cream on the first, white on the second). Abrams, Inc., 2004. Comment(s): Warhol's lifetime Tiffany Christmas cards are rare, and extremely rare signed. The most recent sale price we found of a card, unsigned and without the envelope, was $3,000 at Christie's New York, December 1st, 2014, lot #62. In 1956, in addition to all the work Warhol was getting drawing shoes and bags, he was commissioned to design Christmas cards for Tiffany & Co. on Fifth Avenue in New York City. Warhol's cards were then published by Tiffany's every Christmas up to 1962, the year he started to exhibit his paintings of soup cans. Our example offered here is from the original first printing in 1960. The cards were subsequently reprinted in a slightly larger size in 1980. Lot 1928

Artist: Fanny Rabel (Polish/Mexican, 1922-2008). Title: "Niña de Tlaxcala". Medium: Original lithograph. Date: Composed 1950. Dimensions: Overall size: 14 x 10 1/16 in. (356 x 256 mm). Image size: 14 x 10 1/16 in. (356 x 256 mm).Lot Note(s): Signed in pencil with the initials, upper left; signed with the initials in the plate, lower right. Proof aside from an unknown edition. Cream wove paper. Printed to the edge of the sheet. Fine impression. Very good condition. Provenance: Through Feliciano Peña; Private collection, Patzcuaro, Mexico. Comment(s): Rabel's prints are scarce. Born Fanny Rabinovich, she was a Mexican painter and printmaker, also known as "La Fanny de los Fridos". Her family moved to Mexico City in 1938 to escape the Second World War. Rabel's first exhibition was held at the Liga Popular Israelita in 1941 where Frida Kahlo, her teacher at the time, wrote of her: "Fanny Rabinovich paints as she lives, with great courage, intelligence and sensibility... But what I find most interesting in her painting is the profound roots that link the tradition and strength of her people (Jews). It's not a personal style, but rather socialist. She's worried about class problems and has observed with incredible maturity the character and style of her models, giving them always particularly lively emotions. All of this without pretentiousness and full of femininity and class that make her work so complete." Rabel worked as a muralist with Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros; other famous teachers were Santos Balmori and Francisco Zúñiga. She was a founding member of the Taller de Gráfica Popular (TGP) and is considered one of the four "Fridos," along with Arturo Estrada, Arturo Garcia Bustos, and Guillermo Monroy. Artist: Helmut Newton (German/Australian, 1920-2004). Title: "Canape #2, Villa d' Este, Lake Como, Italy". Medium: Vintage color photometalgraph. Date: Composed 1975. Printed 1975. Dimensions: Overall size: 17 1/4 x 13 in. (438 x 330 mm). Image size: 7 1/4 x 7 1/4 in. (184 x 184 mm).Lot Note(s): Signed in black marker, lower left; signed and dated in the plate. Intended edition of 950 (of which all were printed?). High-grade white Chromecoat coated archival paper. Full margins, as issued. Fine, quality printing. Fine condition. Comment(s): A close-up of this image, one of Newton’s most popular, is the dust jacket photo for Newton’s legendary first book “White Women.” The print is very scarce and quite possibly printed in a run of far less than the 950 proposed. The printing was derived from a high-resolution negative produced from the SX-70 camera. In an effort to show that the SX-70 could successfully compete with traditional analogue cameras and film as a fine art medium, the company gave cameras plus a generous stock of film to leading photographers of the day. Their output was then published by the Polaroid Corporation. Image copyright © Helmut Newton Foundation. [24691-3-800]

Artist: Andy Warhol (American, 1928 - 1987). Title: "Campbell's Soup - Pepper Pot [Ferus Gallery invitation/announcement]". Medium: Original color offset lithograph. Date: Composed 1962. Dimensions: Overall size: 12 1/4 x 10 in. (311 x 254 mm). Image size: 8 7/8 x 5 1/16 in. (225 x 129 mm).Lot Note(s): Signed in pencil, lower right. Edition unknown, presumed very small. Slightly textured white wove paper with serrated lower margin (as issued). Full margins. Fine, strong impression with bright colors. Good to very good condition: folds as issued for mailing; a few handling creases and spots, not in the image. Literature/catalogue raisonne: Paul Marechal, “Andy Warhol Ephemera…Catalogue Raisonne, 1950-1987.” Lyon, France: Les amis du Musee de l’Imprimerie, 2018 (unknown to Marechal, undoubtedly to be included in the forthcoming revised edition); cf. Feldman/Schellmann II.51. For an extensive coverage of the history and importance of this announcement and its exhibition, please see Kirk Varnedoe's essay 'Campbell's Soup Cans, 1962' in Gagosian Gallery's 'Ferus,' 2002, pp. 44-52. The announcement is illustrated, full page, full color, on pg. 42. The exhibition painting upon which the announcement is based is pictured on pg.129. Comment(s): A very rare object. “Gordon’s Print Prices” records only three sales from 1985 to 2019, all works unsigned, the most recent sale realizing $2,750 at Bonhams New York, 12/6/2106, lot #136. The importance of the Warhol exhibition at the Ferus Gallery and this related announcement cannot be overemphasized. Although the Archives of American Art at the Smithsonian has a total of 32 different Irving Blum and Ferus Gallery announcements, it does not possess this announcement. As Wikipedia states in its article on the Campbell's Soup Cans, "Warhol…showed the work on July 9th, 1962 in his first one-man gallery exhibition as a fine artist in the Ferus Gallery of Los Angeles, California. The exhibition marked the West Coast debut of pop art." Note the differences in our poster and the related painting to the later, true to life, screenprints of the soup cans. As Varnedoe states,"…Warhol added one central, repeated note of expediently pure abstraction in the solid gold disk that utterly ignores the fine black printing actually found on this area of the real label." (787 x 610 mm).Lot Note(s): Edition extremely small, probably 100 or less. Thin white smooth wove paper. Printed to the edge of the sheet. Fine, quality printing. Comment(s): This extremely rare poster was distributed in a limited quantity prior to an exhibition held from December 2nd to the 29th at the Vanina Holasek Gallery, 502 W. 27th St. in NYC. The exclusive preview (December 1st) for this, the first (unofficial) Banksy show in NYC, has since become infamous. The full title is “Bankrobber Presents…Banksy N.Y.C….December 2nd to 29th, 2017.” The copyright © for this work may or may not be owned by Banksy, who once opined that “copyright is for losers.”.
