She was given her first commission through the landscape garden designer Roddy Lewellyn. Other large commissioned works include: The twice life sized Hammersmith Man figure which was unveiled by George Melly in 1987. The Peter Scott memorial sculpture for The Wildfowl and Wetlands site at Barnes which was unveiled by David Attenborough in 2000. First expanded edition of AnnanÕs photographic masterpiece, one of 100 copies especially printed for the Corporation of Glasgow with the arms of the city stamped in gilt on the binding. Fredrich Engels, co-writer of ÔThe Communist Party ManifestoÕ in 1848, wrote in his ÔConditions of the Working Class in EnglandÕ in 1844: ÒI have seen human degradation in some of its worst phases, both in England and abroad, but I can advisedly say, that I did not believe, until I visited the wynds of Glasgow, that so large an amount of filth, crime, misery, and disease existed in one spot in any civilised country. The wynds consist of long lanes, so narrow that a cart could with difficulty pass along them; out of these open the ÔclosesÕ, which are courts about fifteen or twenty feet square, round which the houses, mostly three or four storeys high, are built. Mary Caroline, Countess of Lovelace, daughter of the Rt. Hon. James Stuart-Wortley, married Ralph Gordon Noel Milbanke, the 2nd Earl of Lovelace in 1880, who was the third child of William King-Noel, 1st Earl of Lovelace and his wife, Ada Lovelace, the only legitimate daughter of Lord Byron. Byron scholar Sir John Charles Fox discussed the separation of Lord and Lady Byron in his book ÔThe Byron MysteryÕ, published in 1924. Of ÔLady Noel Byron and the LeighsÕ Wise states ÒI suppose this must be the most hopelessly unobtainable book in the whole series of Byroniana, surpassing in rarity even Lord BroughtonÕs ÔContemporary Account of the Separation of Lord and Lady ByronÕ, privately printed in 1870, and the first edition of Lady ByronÕs ÔRemarksÕÓ. Wise goes on to assert that of the thirty-six copies printed only a few were distributed, and Òthe larger proportion of the issue was destroyedÓ. (1)
