Robert Parsons; a 1641 Charles I edition of 'Leicester's Common-Wealth', first written in the reign of Elizabeth I, original title, 'The Copie of a Leter Wryten by a Master of Cambrige' 1584. A scholars' book circulated in Elizabethan England which attacked Elizabeth's favourite, Robert Dudley Earl of Leicester, the book in the form of a dialogue between a Cambridge lawyer and a gentleman pleading for religious tolerance. The work was read as Roman Catholic propaganda against the political and religious policy of Elizabeth I's reign, especially the Puritan sympathies held by Leicester, also contains references to Leicester's reputed monstrous sexual appetite and his new wife's lewd private life.

Manuscript - Mariners Magazine. An illustrated manuscript written by Robert Tillidge, circa 1742, being largely neat transcription of sections of Captain Samuel Sturmy's Mariners Magazine (first published 1669), containing information on the Julian calendar, trigonometry, sailing and navigation, artificial fireworks, etc., written and illustrated with diagrams and vignettes on 109 leaves, mostly to rectos only, and including as original work 14 full-page pen and ink and watercolour illustrations including self portrait with globes and instruments, and a final amusing deathbed scene, some browning and dust-soiling, a few tears and old repairs with slight loss at front and rear, later half calf over marbled boards, heavily rubbed, folio (277 x 185 mm) A curious and interesting manuscript, that appears to be largely direct transcriptions of text and problems in Sturmy's work which reached its fourth edition in 1700. The illustrations are all, or mostly original works, and beside the self portraits include illustrations of artillery 'fire works'. The colophon beneath the deathbed scene at the end gives Tillidge's age as 25 on completion of the manuscript on 2nd June 1743. (1)NB. Please note the quantity of full-page illustrations has been amended from 40 to 14.

Paddington Terminus, pencil and sepia wash on card, showing figures and horse-drawn vehicles in front of the arcaded exterior of Paddington Station, pencil captions 'Vynette' and 'Paddington Terminus' to lower margin and below image respectively, some spotting and marks, closed tear in lower margin encroaching 1" into foreground, edge of sheet with pin holes (outside image), image size 31 x 45.5cm (12.25 x 18ins), sheet size 38 x 53cm (15 x 21ins), together with a copy of The History and Description of the Great Western Railway, by John C. Bourne, David & Charles Reprints, 1970, original cloth in slightly torn and stained dustjacket, large folio British artist, engraver and photographer John Cooke Bourne is best known for his lithographs showing the construction, infrastructure and scenery of the railways. His important work on the Great Western Railway was first published by David Bogue in 1843, with a subsequent, more commonly known edition, in 1846. This watercolour is a preparatory sketch for the vignette which appears at the end of the Preface, entitled in the book 'Paddington Station'. (2)

Provenance: Macclesfield Library, Shirburn Castle, with large bookplate to front pastedown for the South Library, and press mark 161.B.29. The first English edition of Molinier's Politiques Chrestiennes, published in Paris in 1621, in which the author provides a Christian for those involved in politics. (1)

Busby, 1610, woodcut diagrams and initials, front blank with signature 'A', erratic pagination, some light spotting and soiling, light marginal water stain, some fraying to front blank and title, early ownership signature of Thomas Staveley at head of title (possibly the antiquary and historian of Leicester, 1626-1684), contemporary limp vellum, manuscript title to spine, later stitching to joints, some soiling and small losses to spine, small 4to One of three imprint variants, this one without printer's initials, appears to conform with STC 18640a. Signatures M1-8 and N1-8 are unsold sheets from the 1607 first edition. Norden was surveyor of the Duchy of Cornwall, as well as the royal castles and crown woods. (1)

Francois Ravaillac was a religious fanatic who murdered Henry IV of France in 1610, for which he was tortured before being pulled apart by four horses, a method of execution reserved for regicides. Scarce first edition of the authorized translation by William Rawley, as opposed to the entirely different and somewhat inaccurate translation brought out by Okes a few months earlier (referred to as "lame and defective" in 'To the Reader'). Some copies have the engraved frontispiece from the Okes translation added, but it does not, strictly speaking, belong, and is not called-for as part of the collation. The volume includes dietary tips to prolong life: 'Curing of Diseases is effected by Temporrary Medicines, but Lengthening of Life requireth Observation of Diets'. (1)
